He is doing what we would expect him to do .See what is the best available talent that we can acquire for nothing in the psd. (who else is their at the moment ) We do not expect Dennis to sit on his arse and do nothing do we. He is a pretty good judge of character. We do not know the full story with Gardiner so let him get on with trying to do the best for our club and get off his back.
By the way how do we know we want him solely as a ruckmen, dennis tell you or have we been reading the newspapers again.
No doubt their are some young potential draftees over their in WA that we would possibly be talking to as well to judge their character and so on ready for the up coming draft.
Such negative people i have never come across in my whole life
The best thing for the club is to get someone in who is not under pressure to "produce". Thats a list manager who can make strategic decisions on the list. Think Pelchen from the Hawks who traded a few senior players and slowly and surely picked the eyes out of the 2004 and 5 draft.
Dont leave it up to a coach who is under pressure and has some sort of reputation to maintain. Someone batting for survival.
Its about "timing" your list to mature together. Identifying strategic weaknesses and the way to overcome them. Who might be traded and the effect on the playing list and what you can get for them and weigh it up. Putting yourself right in the mix for young kids by gaining extra picks where you believe you are getting value.
So for example it was Hawthorn with complicated deals in 2005 but at the end of the day they wanted more picks in the top 25. Nothing after that. They identified some speed and skill and wanted a few kids who had it and were likely to be around in that range. They knew other clubs did not rate last years draft that highlyand they loved on them.
So Birchall/Bailey/Muston were picked after Ellis and Dowler were taken early. A young ruckman was taken (most likely they already knew then Spider would not be there after 2006) and a careful strategic risk was taken on a young ruckman. Same sort of risk/reward was done on Muston.
Birchall fits the modern style of game and brings hard running and long kicking and versatility. Moving with the times.
Its a lot easier to do this with a glut of draft picks no doubt.
But we are in the same situation this year. We have ruck problems and midfield problems. Where will the rucks and runner be in the draft. You try and work that out and you see where your picks are and then you might try to acquire a couple of more picks to fill out a stretegic weakness while working within the principle of picking the best player.
So for me thats pick 20 to 35 for the midfielders. Thats where value is for me relative to the pick. The earlier picks will be sewn up and very hard to trade them from a club without paying a huge price. Getting into the 2nd round we move towards the range of a very good prospect and not a gun one. Clubs have already had a pick and might be prepared to take a player and give up a very good "prospect" but not a gun one.
