Well I have done the Luck Ladder for 2006 and just a warning, it is not pretty viewing for Blues fans.
For those that don't know the luck ladder is pretty simple every round each team gets points allocated to them according to the ladder position of their opponent that week. If you play the 14th team on the ladder you get 14 points.
That mean 21 weeks are counted (only have a ladder after round 1).
What it indicates is how often particular teams encounter 'in form' or 'out of form' teams over the season. Sometimes you find that a couple of teams have a dream run and play lots of bottom teams and other have a hard run, playing lots of team in the top 4.
Well the sad news for Carlton is that in 2006 Carlton was equal top with respect to 'luck' throughout the season.
What this means is despite being in the bottom four for much of the season, we still managed to play more teams in the lower half of the ladder than all other teams.
The second and third columns indicate how many games during the season each team played a top 4 or a bottom 4 side.
This mean that despite having a great run of 'luck' during the season we still managed to finish bottom.
It was the same story in 2005.
Lots of luck but a bottom finish.
You can see that this table can be a good indicator if a team has finished lower than perhaps they should have. When collingwood finished 15th in 2005 they had the toughest run of any team. Yet in 2006, they have the 5th easiest run during the year. This might explain such a big rise on the ladder in one year.
In fact if you add up the last three years the Blues have had the easiest time in terms of playing bottom teams.
So what does this mean?
Well, our luck has to turn around sooner or later.
If we have an unlucky year next year it could get
really nasty.
This really indicates to me that we have by far the worst list in the competition and we are at least 2 or 3 years away from any sort of joy.
I know others will interpret it differently but that is the beauty of footy.
