What did he want in return though?

Pagan gone... which most people want but havent got the $$$ or the balls.

And Mitchell to coach... he is our only realistic option if Pagan is shown the door... its not like we had the option in bringing Roos/Craig or something.

The problem was 2 fold... Mitch wasnt the name that the board would have wanted to dig them out of their mess in the PR stakes.

The board is shit scared at the amount of influence the new group would have.. and that they paid for it.. it would be known at any up and coming elections. (But this board wernt prepared to do it even though they know how the players feel.. and that they themselves signed him up on a 3 year contract)

The Brown syndicate wasnt asking too much...

Pagan stays, with strings attached.
Quote:
Pagan is understood to have been advised that to stay, all of his assistants — with the exception of Barry Mitchell — must go and that changes to other key football posts can be expected

Quote:
He rang The Age last night and offered a prepared statement:

"As a player and coach I have experienced the highs and lows. The last six months has probably been the toughest. I have never wavered in my belief in the greatness of the Carlton Football Club.

"As sad as I am that I could lose two great lieutenants — who I have shared premierships with — in Tony Elshaug and Peter Mulkearns, 39 years in AFL/VFL football has taught me that the club comes before any individual. Tony and Peter both agree with that.

"All I want and need is a united football club on and off the field to restore Carlton's greatness. What needs to happen at Carlton is that we all need to believe in one another again. When I leave the club it will be stronger than when I arrived."

No, that was rumoured to be Southby's daughters who were Pagan's back ups in case SOS didn't come to the party.

Steve Benson would be happy.

Which thread said we were looking for a high profile recruiter?

I have no problem with Hughes.

Dont Blame Denis Pagan for all the crap in Carlton, well he stuffed up with the Mick Martyn 300 crap and some of the hacks we recruited because we were ban for 2 years, you only count the drafts after that and we are yet to see the results yet. You blame the bunch of nancy bunch of pansies running on the ground, the ones who have been there for a while and that's half the squad.
They will be all gone in 3 years time and Carlton are like they say probably 3 years away, hopefully shorter.

I feel sick at what this board has done and am worried greatly at the amount of damage that this has caused our club

My membership will be brought just so that I know I can at least try and do something as far as getting rid of the board goes.

Sticks you are my second all time favourite player however as a board member you are not up to it and should put in your notice immediately

Some of you guys really need to take a breather and not get carried away with some of the information posted on here.

Every club has gone through whhat we are going through, look where the Saints are at the moment. How long ago was it that the Saints had Tim Watson then Blighty, strugling down the bottom winning spoons? Where are they now? ok they haven't one the big one yet but they are on track.

I hope some of you guys don't preach your beliefs outside this forum becasue we should all remain positve. Ok you don't agree with some of the decisions, you have two options:

1. Remain positive and put a positive spin on it
2. Go and support Richmond or Geelong

I expect to cop some flack from some of you however when we do return to a force I can keep my head up as one who didn't slag my club when they were in need.

I dare say some of you who were ranting about getting rid of Fev last year are now calling for more blood. Face it each club goes through this shit period.

Our problem is that we have never experienced a bad 5 year period. For me the up coming delistings, drafting, PSD and the new assistants is more important.

We have all been raving about Kennedy, Bower and Murphy why? Because they give us hope. Where do you get hope from? drafting and recruitment. Many of you want us to tank so we get draft picks why? because we have a weak list, is it Pagans fault that we have a weak list.

At the end of the day the club should have handled the situation better however part of the review was completed within 3 days of the season ending.

By the way I'm not supporting Pagan here I'm supporting the Club. If so many of you experts are right and the board is incompetant they will be replaced with time, in the mean time air your oppinions on this site but please be positive to people outside this forum because we need supporters and more importantly members.

Even if the delivery was a bit half baked, I can understand why the board wanted to come out last night and state that Pagan's contract would remain. In theory, the speculation now ends. Good move.

One of the main 'yes' men has gone in Elshaug, and if we track back a week or two, many would have been happy enough with Denis staying and a new injection of talent at the assisstant level.

Let's hope there's no more keystone cops. This last couple of days has reflected very poorly on the club. Having various media outlets referring to us as a "basket case" is not only accurate, but therefore a complete embarassment for everyone involved, from Smorgon, to Pagan to the meat and veg supporter base.

Here's hoping for a cracker finals series to deflect some attention away from our apparent incompetence.

If we wish to return to the successful days of carlton - and I assume all of us do then it should be remembered those successes always came with strong leadership from powerful Boards. The gapsd betwen those successes occurred when the boards lost focus/leadership.

I ask you - has the events of the past 2 days filled you with belief this is a powerful Board?

So people here worry about this Board - they should. JE taught one single thing to many, many Bluebagger fans. Never believe a Board is always working in the club's best interests.

I argued with Synbad when this Board was first elected to give them a go but watching their work and also just going to things like the coaches lunceon continually makes me realize a single, sad thing., We ar a second rate club at the moment - and second rate is being generous, o mean is it too much to ask for a microphone that works? - we need powerful leadership to drag us back up towards the top.

I could not give a stuff about the coaching at the moment - at all. Because I firmly believe until we get the Board riught a coach has @#$%&! all chance of doing any good anyways so we might as well stay down the bottom and get the picks.

I hope an alternative ticket is put up - they have my vote - and I hope many, many others as well.

My positivity is this - I am positive this Board is weak as piss. And yes Caz, if I had the contacts I'd run. 8)

Can't say I'm at all happy with this decision from the board but to be quite honest they were not exactly lining up saying give the job to me.

I hope this is the kick up the arse that Pagan needed , I hope he can learn from this and take the club forward and not backward like he has been doing.

I hope he doesn't see this as a ringing endorsment of his coaching style and carries on the way he has been.

I hope we see a Fevola like turn around he Pagan next year and I hope we are all singing the praises of the board for making such a calculated and brave decision .

We can only hope that come round 7 next year we are not sitting with 2 hard fought wins 4 honouralble losses and coming off the back of a Pagan 10 goal plus flogging

This could be a good thing.

Denis Pagan take this on board learn from it consult your peers ask for advice and listen to people around you . You have been given a second chance now use it and use it to the betterment of our football club

Great post SB.

Hear, hear. Well said SB, and no doubt said with a degree of difficulty given your well known stance on wanting Pagan gone.

Like you, I hope there are some positives to come out of this humiliation for all involved.

Making silly statements that "Pagan has lost the players" is stupid. I haven't heard one player come out and say that.

People who believe they have inside knowledge about this club better get new sources. It looks like the board and coaching staff are doing their job by not letting every Tom, Dick and Harry know what is going on. Those with so called inside knowledge on this site didn't pick this outcome.

As with the players, well I would ask them again or else don't make opinions that blanket ALL players. The players who will be delisted don't like Pagan.......f%^k I wonder why?

I hope for the benefit of the club, Pagan keeps being hard on the players and not soft with them like Brittain was. Make them turn up to training when they are injured so they aren't sitiing in a pub somewhere, make them do weights etc. Previous coaches didn't care less about this sort of stuff.

And if you all thought Mitchell would have been a good coach, well I have some ripper stories about his relationship with some players in the past. I would not want him to be coach of my club.

We need professionals at Carlton and Pagan is the most PROFESSIONAL coach we have ever had.

I now look forward to trade period and the draft and I hope the club has a productive and successful pre-season. Time to move forward.....

Despite all the perceived incompetencies of the board over recent weeks, at the end of the day, they have come up with the right decisions and that is the main thing.

Secondly, perhaps the media has to take a lot of the blame for whipping up some of this hysteria. I was almost laughing last night on SEN when Rob Waters was telling us all how the board had decided in the last hour that Denis was gone, and IN THE MIDDLE OF THAT SENTENCE, he was interrupted by Smorgon's announcement saying Denis was staying! They have no idea. They try to break stories and get one up on each other at the expense of the club and supporters. They actually report as if they are in the board meeting room with them. It is ridiculous. So don't believe everything you read or hear, because a lot of it (not all) has proven to be wrong again.
