Those game reviews for the 1897 games look fantastic steve.

Just to let you know I just found out that the microfiche machines in the State Library of Victoria now have memory stick slots, so anyone can copy the microfiche contents directly.

No cost either. :-D :-D

I will have this coming wednesday off, so I'm going to go to the Library and see how long it takes and how much I can fit on my storage media.

So hold off on the photocopies at this stage, if all goes well I should be able to collect a lot of info in electronic form. From their we can distribute it out to whoever would like to help putting the info in the Blueseum.

Will report back about how I go. :-D

Cheers Jamie. I think the game reviews will benefit from having both The Age and The Argus info. Round 1 has both, and they tend to focus on different things, so it just adds more flavour and depth to the reviews, especially when some of the write-ups are really small.

But it will be great to get a few of the early years done, then the Blueseum will really start to be bearing fruit. I'm looking forward to seeing what you get on Wednesday.

I have changed the format of the team lists table a little bit. Made the interchange area look a bit neater (I hope).

http://www.blueseum.org/cfc/tiki-index. ... 18%2C+2006

What do you guys think does this look like an OK way to show the 4 interchange players?

Until they bring in a 6 man bench I reckon there's no perfect solution. :P

I'm happy to run with whatever.

How was the previous team table showing up on your screen cb? These things can look quite different sometimes. On mine the table had lines that were different widths and it looked a little 'off'. But it might just be my computer. :-D

Managed to get into town today and do a bit of research on the old papers.

The State Library was fairly useless, the computer connected microfilm readers only has USB ports to connect to so my memory cards were no good.

So I decided to wander up to Melbourne Uni to see what they had these days.

:-D

There microfilm readers have computers attached with CD-Roms, so you can scan the microfilm onto the hard drive and then onto a CD-R.

After a while the scanning was very easy, did all of 1878 from the Argus in just under an hour. Should be a lot quicker next time.

So steve give one of the Uni's in Perth a try, they might have the same set up MU has here.

Have been tiddying up the pictures tonight but about to call it a night. Will put some of the images up here and on the Blueseum to show everyone how the scans look.

:-D

Jarusa, no chance of me getting to any of the uni libraries at the moment, I've got a fair bit on my plate. I still have the rest of 1897 to type up and then I'll have to play it by ear as to when I can investigate the uni's here.

I think that was more of an error in the code than the layout itself, if that makes sense. The first few tables I did had the problem I think you are referring to, but after a bit more research at tables that looked "right" I was ablt to fix up my gremlins.

No worries at all there mate, there are no expectations simply because ..... well there are no expectations.

Good thing about the Blueseum is there are no deadlines.

Just do stuff whenever you feel like it.

Don't tell molsey I said that.

It's because of attitudes like that Jarusa that we're 4 weeks behind schedule...

Four and a half weeks now.

So, how many people knew that the Blues played Rugby Union against the best NSW could offer!!!

http://www.blueseum.org/cfc/tiki-index. ... ubgy+Union

I thought about typing a summary, but to me the article itself tells the story itself.

Is this easy enough for everyone to read, is it clear?

Some nice stats for last weekend's game have been included by the Blueseum's resident statistician/historian.

http://www.blueseum.org/cfc/tiki-index. ... %2C%202006

Like the one about Fev kicking the 1000th goal for the 25 guernsey. Reckon number 25 is a chance to break the record in a few years. :-D

I agree the scan of the article brings with it some old world charm and context, but it is a bit hard to read. When was the paragraph invented? :P

Good pick-up ddddd. That's the work of Pat, one of the best footy writers I've ever read. A great recruit to the Blueseum cause.

Thanks to whoever nominated me for the AFL toyota volunteer prize too - it looks like I get tickets to a Round 22 Game because of my work in the Blueseum, with a chance to win finals tickets.

Well done molsey, well deserved, you would be well into the hundreds (maybe thousands) with hours you have actually done for the club.

camelboy, yeah know what you mean, I think what will eventually happen with those really old pages is to collect the game reviews from all the sources back then (The Argus, The Age, The Australasian, Punch) and combine them all to make a match review and at the end of the review have links to all the electronic copies of each individual review.

If we don't get any other volunteers to copy microfiche that is still probably a few years away though. Would be a lot of work. :(

Looks like those Uni Students are too busy studying stuff, J?

Perhaps we should focus on easier tasks until the Blueseum becomes a little more mainstream. I live in hope that a resurgence will bring more people back to the CFC site and of course it's new history section.

I vote we:
- Jazz up the Premierships page as a priority (#80 already)
- Find a bigger / better way to bring glory to Premiership players (through the Players section?)
- Pay you $20 to find a way to rotate the articles like you have done the page links.

Just like to mention great page just put up by steve about Carlton's very first VFL win, over guess who, St Kilda.

http://www.blueseum.org/cfc/tiki-index. ... %2C%201897

Love this line.

'Next time you drive past the Junction Oval shed a thought for the history in Carlton's first win their, and also, the commencement of our historical superiority over the Saints (ex- 2003-2006)!'

I've just updated the opening of Princes Park in Round 7, 1897. I've quoted a section verbatim from The Argus, because I thought it might be interesting to some readers. Anyone interested can check it out at:

http://www.blueseum.org/cfc/tiki-index. ... +7%2C+1897

Jarusa, I think that line was already in there from another author, so I can't take any credit :(

Molsey, For what it's worth to the debate, I reckon we should try and occasionally grab a year from microfiche as we can, maybe between you, me and Jarusa. It'll take a long time to do this, but we have to start sometime :) If we can get a couple of years every couple of months between us, we'll get there eventually ;)

And steve, yeah, good point. If only there was a better way?

This might answer the question about who nominated you for the volunteer award molsey.

http://toyota.afl.com.au/winners.aspx

It certainly wasn't me. 8)

Enjoy your lap of honour. :-D
