From 1 to 31 July, the HomePage has had 5,500 hits at a time when most of the substantial programming was complete (ie it didn't have me ducking in & Out all the time to enter data).

This is only to the front page, and I think Jarusa has some data on the great usage of the 4000 or so information pages. Great effort everyone, Blueseum is on its way.

As promised I played around with the microfishes in the state library today, and I've entered game reviews for the first 2 games of 1897.

In terms of getting the info, I grabbed rounds 1 and 2 from the Argus and round 1 from the age before running out of time.

It took me just under an hour to do this, but a lot of this was learning time (eg where the microfish film and machines were, what the format of the old papers was, how to work the machines properly).

I reckon that after spending an hour to learn all this, you could probably get a whole season done from two papers in an hour to and hour and a half. One drawback is that the photocopying is quite expensive, $0.45 a copy in the WA state library.

Anyway, I thought I'd pass the info on in case anyone can spare a hour or two once a week, once a month, etc. I think we have plenty of people who'd be happy to write game reviews off the material as and when they can, but most people are struggling to find a block of time to grab the info.

Any uni students out there who want to volunteer some time for the Blueseum?

Amazing stuff.

For those who don't know what you're talking about, like me, what is the Argus? Is it a paper from the era? A Perth paper or a Melbourne paper? If so, did you look up a 'sports' section and paraphrase an article or score update from some games?

The Argus is a defunct Melbourne paper.

The Argus , published in Melbourne from 1846-1957, was the quality newspaper of record in the nineteenth and first part of the twentieth century.

The Argus was one of the major Melbourne newspapers (along with Herald, The Sun, and The Age). It started in 1846 and folded in 1957. There is a wikipedia entry on it.

BTW sorry for not doing more on the site lately,I have notes for a few games in 2000, just need to go over to library to do more. Maybe I'll post what I have already written in the next week or so.

Sorry, Jarusa told me about it and I kinda assumed that all you Vic's would know about it :)

The old Argus is really condensed, there isn't a lot of whitespace in the old newspapers at all. But once you've found one football column, it's pretty easy to find the rest. Just look in the edition after the game which is usually Monday, but there are some exceptions so it helps to know when the games were played (I took in a list for the first season). Then it's usually towards the back of the paper (like sport is today) and starts at the top of a column with something like "The Football Season".

The interesting thing about 1897, being the first year of the VFL, it's split into two sections, "The League" and "The Association".

But anyway, for anyone interested in taking a look, there is different information in The Argus and The Age. For example, the Argus had quite a lot on the Round 1 game, but not a lot on the Round 2, so it is definately worth taking a look at both. As I said in my earlier post, once you have gone through the learning curve, it's pretty easy.

Thanks for the info Steve.

45 cents is steep for photocopies!

I should be able to get a day of every couple of weeks soon. I will go into the State library and collect info as well. Maybe we should start a thread in the Blueseum forum, keeping track of what has been collected.

Since the information is so old there is no problem with copying the information verbatim into the Blueseum. Just need to state the date and Newspaper it was taken from.

CALLING ALL UNI STUDENTS!

If you love the Blues and would like to contribute, get down to the microfiche section of your Uni library and help us out by collecting match reports from the newspapers from 1898 onwards.

I'll even help you out

Seems as though there has at least been some activity towards digitising the Argus.

Even though it is just indexes at the moment for 1870-1879 there is some interesting stuff there for carlton:

Result for Carlton Football Club

These indexes can be used as an easy reference to find all these stories on the CFC from the 1870's.

Looks like they are still a long way from digitising the entire contents of the newspaper though. In the US and UK they have had the contents of their majore newspapers digitised for years. Shows how backwards we are as a country. </end rant>

The good thing about using uni resources is hopefully it should be a fair bit cheaper too.

Alternatively, just take a laptop in and type up reviews in word and then just cut and paste them into the Blueseum later. It will be more time consuming, but cheaper.

Just to confirm my estimate, I got to the library today, and with the learning curve over it took me about 30 minutes to get all 14 rounds for the 1897 season from the Argus. I'd recommend getting both papers, because some of the write-ups are quite small, so i think having two sources for each round is a good idea.

I'll put the Argus stuff into the Blueseum as I can for 1897, and then I'll see when I can get back to the library and get The Age write-ups too.

Just a piece of advise for anyone considering doing a year, take the dates of the games in with you, sometimes (eg Queens birthday), games weren't played on a Saturday, or there were no games in a particular week. It just saves a lot of time to be able to find the articles while you are in the library.

So, about 90 years to go, give or take the recent years that have been done. Any volunteers?

Those game reviews for the 1897 games look fantastic steve.

Just to let you know I just found out that the microfiche machines in the State Library of Victoria now have memory stick slots, so anyone can copy the microfiche contents directly.

No cost either. :-D :-D

I will have this coming wednesday off, so I'm going to go to the Library and see how long it takes and how much I can fit on my storage media.

So hold off on the photocopies at this stage, if all goes well I should be able to collect a lot of info in electronic form. From their we can distribute it out to whoever would like to help putting the info in the Blueseum.

Will report back about how I go. :-D

nikki is a champ.

Same here, Jarusa. My problem is getting the info but if it can be provided I'd be happy to make up a game review.
