I just wanted to generate some dsicussion on Carlton not only providing for the future by recruiting the best young kids available, but what about the coaches? (camelboy feel free to move this to the appropriate forum).

Just for a moment picture Carlton without Denis Pagan. Please don't comment on sacking him or anything. Regardless if he retires, gets sacked or gets hit by a bus tomorrow what are peoples thoughts on potential long term coaching prospects to take over after Denis is no longer at the helm?

A couple of suggestions from where I see it are (no real order):

Guy McKenna (Coll)
Brad Hotch (Coll)
Ken Hinkley (Geel)
Brian Royal (Rich)
David Wheadon (Rich)
Matt Rendall (Saints)
John Longmire (Swans)
Peter Sumich (WCE)
Robert Wiley (WCE)
Stephen Silvagni (Dogs)
Gerard Healy
Garry Lyon

If I had to rank them I would say:

1. Brian Royal
2. Robert Wiley (reminds me of Neil Craig)
3. Matt Rendall

Thoughts?

Remember, please no references to keeping/sacking Denis etc.

Where do I get this bus?

I dont rate Royal.

Don Pyke has excellent credentials.
Wheadon is a career assistant. Good lateral thinker but too old.
Longmire is highly rated and Paul Hudson is doing everything right.

How about Shaun Rehn?

I believe he had a good reputation with developing youngsters at West Adelaide and now has the experience working under Leigh Mathews.

Rendell's too old [same age as Wallsy I think]

My top 3 would be
SOS
Mark Harvey [forgot to include him]
Wayne Carey [forgot to include him too]

GET ON THE BARRY MITCHELL BANDWAGON!. :-D

I'd like to say Garry O'Donnell but i have a strange feeling that Mark Harvey went to freo becuase he knew Garry would be the next coach.
(I have no evidence to back that up, just a general feeling!)

Other options would be SOS who seems to be doing well at the Bulldogs, but it is a little too early to tell.

But for me, it's Barry all the way.

Nice call Blue Vain you cheeky bugger.

I agree re Pyke but I think Riley is the brains at WCE. I think Royal deserves a chance, maybe not with the Blues?

Horse Longmire is a good chance, he is just funny to look at!

Kingkerna, I left off O'Donnell because he is a monty to take over from old grandpa Sheedy in a year or two.

I think Mictchell is in the same boat as Wheadon. A career assistant.

Ratten - I thought he gave away coaching due to his business?? He needs more years as an assistant. From all reports when he was with Melbourne he was extremely well received by the players. Maybe 2015!?

SOS will need to communicate a lot better than he does on Channel 10. Maybe it is just nerves in front of the camera.

Didn't include Harvey cos he will take over from Connolly next year if they don't make the finals.

Carey will never be a full time coach. He makes too much $$$ from the media and he still likes to paaaaaaaaarrrrtaaaaay! :P

True, but Mick Malthouse is just confusing as all hell in front of the camera.

And Sheady, sometimes i got no idea what the @#$%&! he's saying.

Ditto Pagan.............

SOS at least makes sense, he just takes a while to say it and he says it in a really 'Nerdy' type voice.

Pyke is the midfield coach at the Crows now Baggers.
Neil Craig rates him highly. He comes from a sports medicine background and has served in football club administration and served at board level.
I believe his father is Frank Pyke, former head of the VIS and very highly rated in sports science so he's been surrounded by quality sports people.

He seems to be controlling his football education quite well and would be learning a shitload from Neil Craig, Charlie Walsh & co.

Good info Blue Vain. Sounds like a real potential coach of the Blues! He'll have to leave WCE given they have Worsfold there for the next decade.

So we have a call for Baz Mitchell and SOS. Shaun Rehn was mentioned. Perhaps he could lend a hand to our ruck division cos they need it.

Find a coach who is not associated with football at all.

Break this mold of hiring ex footballers and find someone who can look at the game from a different point of view .

The game is changing every year most of the football coaches have learnt their craft from their experiences whilst they played

Neil Craig has brought a fresh lease of life to how footballers need to be coached

Paul Roos draws on his time he spent in the States for some of his thinking

We need to hire a coach who will lift this side ahead of the opposition by the way they play the game

Heard Pyke interviewed somewhere a few weeks ago - was very impressive - sounds very much in the Craig mould...

Pyke for me also - heard him inetrviewed on the radio - was it before a match on 774? - and I was impressed plus I love the way the crows midfield work so damn hard.

Any suggestions Sydney Blue?? Peter Cosgrove?

You may be onto something cos Roos and Craig are going great guns.

Another one for Shaun Rehn.

Will Gary Lyon ever leave the pile of $$$$ he is earning in the media?

Maybe a Pyke, Baz Mitchell as 2IC, Rehn as ruck coach, SOS in defence and King Carey back again for the forwards! Midfield split between Pyke and Mitchell.

Problem solved?!??! Shit that was easy. :-D

Any other suggestions?

Does anyone rate Wayne Schwass as a future coach?
