Halfway through the year all the BCGB (Brown colour glasses brigade) were all about how shit Pagan is because of the flood and not playing the kids.

Now we're playing the kids and we're not flooding. We're trying to play an attacking style of game that we've clearly not yet got the skilled or developed personnel to do. Other sides know this, so the common plan against us is to sit back and wait for us to make mistakes and hurt us on the rebound. Not a plan that's going to win you a premiership, but it's a plan that's going to beat a team of developing kids.

So why would another ordinary team like Essendon* be able to get away with this plan?

Because of the very fact that they are bottoming out with older players, and we are developing the kids. A midfield with the experience of the Johnsons and Peverill isn't going to get you far in the next few years, but it's still going to be good enough against a team that's developing... and a team that's only recently changed it's game plan from defence to attack.

So realistically, yes, our skills are bad, and because of that teams just sit back and wait. Going forward though, we are playing the kind of footy (in terms of the plan) that will get us to where we want to be soon, and with another pre-season in the kids, plus another couple of quality kids into the side next year, we're not as far away as the BCGB would have us believe.

A realistic take on the way we are does not need to simply mean "we are shit".

Excellent post.

This isn't true.

We would've only qualified for a first round priority selection this year if we had four wins or less in consecutive years, not an average of four wins.

That's why the club were disappointed a few weeks ago when the AFL ruled that 4 wins and a draw ruled us out for a first round priority selection this season.

Yes it is true. He's saying that if we win more than one game now we'll miss out on the priority pick before the SECOND round. If we get 16 points or less this year we get a PP before the second round (pick 18 if Essendon* finish below us) and then our normal second round pick 20.

If we finish with 4 and a half wins we don't get the PP, so if Essendon* finish below us and get the PP and we finish 15th we'd have only pick 19.

It was good to see on Saturday that when we went forward for the majority of the time we actually had someone there as opposed to the forwards having to double back after flooding the oppositions backline.

A lot of our mistakes on Saturday came from our so called 'experienced players' like McGrath (did anyone else think he was playing for Essenson again on the weekend??!?!), Stevens, Thornton and even Fev.

We are heading in a much better direction than Essendon* in terms of a playing list which is good to see.

Someone earlier on this thread compared us to the Western Bulldogs of 2-3 years ago. Unless we improve our foot and hand skills plus our general decision making we will be outside the top 8 for the next 5 years at least! You only had to watch some of the delivery to Brad Johnson and Brad Ottens in yesterdays game and compare it to the shit that is served up to Fev each week (Marc Murphy excluded). We are a long way off the mark in terms of skills compared to all other teams......except maybe the bombers.

Simple summary of Saturdays game was that on the day, both teams were as shit as each other. Neither team will make the finals in the coming years, both are attempting to re-build and on face value at the moment Carlton looks ahead of Essendon*. That could change very quickly!

The major difference is that Essendon* have shitloads of cash to further enahance development and recruting resources whilst Carlton are sponging off the AFL.

We are still flooding............we did it a bit on Saturday..............but your right, we have cut down on it dramatically! And i've even said that quite a few times on this site that we have adopted more of an 'Attacking' style of play in our last 8 or so games. And i've even gone as far as to say 'Well Done' to Denis on that (Posted it here on TC numerous times).

In regards to 'Playing the kids'? I think people were just a little upset that guys like Sporn/Prenda are getting chances when others like Russell miss out. But even that has been improved on since the West Coast match to some degree and i have made note of that too.

I so often sound like a broken record because of my 'Negative' comments towards Denis, but i give him credit when it's due!

I'm Glad we're playing the kids.
I'm Glad we're not Flooding ('As Much')
I'm Glad we're playing a more 'Attacking' style of play as opposed to the 'Defensive' crap we were playing before (ala StKilda).

But forgive me if i still get a little critical of where we are. We have one of the highest paid coach's in the leauge and have done so for over 3 years now and we have gone nowhere!
If Kouta can cop criticsim for not delivering what he should for his high pay-packet, then Denis should too!

It's just really sad that we are going nowhere! Sad, and painfull!

They had quite a few of their 'Older' type players out injured the other day. Fletcher, Llyod, Hird, McPhee (not so old thou).

We should have killed them, plain and simple really!

My mistake. I thought the one-year rule was still five wins, but it has been reduced to four (16 points).

i for one am actually enjoying watching us at the moment (skill errors aside)

they still make me frustrated, but i find its the skill errors coming from the likes of Stevens, French, etc.. - who are old enough and have the experience to know better that frustrate me more than the kids.

watching setanta in the first quarter i was petrified that pagan was going to take him off, he didnt, and in the end i think Setanta had probably his best game for us.

i can accept errors and bad judgement from the kids, they are developing, and developing nicely IMO.

i was a bit critic of pagan at the start of the season, but IMO the game plan, and his willingness to play the kids in roles that suit them has been great.

we are far from the shit side some would want us to believe.

mark it in your diary now when i said this.

this year we will continue to make errors.

next year (07) will be about honoralbe loses

(08) will be about either just making it or just missing out

(09) will be about in it for sure

(10) will be about having a dead set crack at winning a flag

Sorry....................forget what i just said! :?

Carry on..................................................

Don't you want an extra 2nd rnd pick?

:-D Tough one man............i just don;t know!

Is ONE extra pick gonna solve all our problems? Of course not.
Will it help? Possibly.

We have Freo next week, which is a possibility (although a small one seeing as though they have come into some decent form).

Hawthorn in a few weeks time which is a winnable game.

Richmond is a winnable game too

And jesus i would love to beat Collingwood and MAYBE cost them a spot in the top 4!

I'd love to win all of those above! @#$%&! EM ALL! I want to win!

Even if we did win all of those games, we would still end up with a pick in the top 5 + a pick around the 20.

It's a tough call for me. BUT I CAN TOTALLY UNDERSTAND WHY PEOPLE HAVE THEIR OPINIONS IN REGARDS TO NOT WINNING!

We have some good kids coming through, i'm happy with that.

But.............

2002 - 16th
2003 - 15th
2004 - 10th
2005 - 15th
2006 - 15th (possibly could still be 16th)

But i'm happy with the new 'Recruiting' guys that came in a few years back (just before Russel / Hartlett draft i think).
Thought they recruited very well last season.
Murphy & Kennedy are the obvious ones, but Bower & Edwards & even Ryan Jackson (& Flint) are fantastic pick-ups.

I can get excited about that, and i am excited about that.

My thoughts exactly Prez.

This season, while frustrating, has some hidden rewards if you just scrape beyond the surface of ladder position and scorenoard results.

Thanks for the post Wolfister,

you are spot on!

Look - not everything is perfect. But to say we aren't making steps in the right direction is just plain wrong.

We won more games in '04 with retreads, then we won more games last year with retreads and blokes on their last legs (Campo, Lappin, and Kouta). Now this year we are starting to see the emergence of a group of young kids who play with enthusiasm, dedication, pride in the guernsey, and a desire to better themselves as players.

Stop looking at the ladder, because this year it is telling lies... we are definitely on the way back. And when we get there, the beauty of the bungling from our club and the draft penalties from the AFL is that we are going to have a bunch of kids of approximately the same age coming through the system together.

That my friends is what a dynasty is built on. None of this rubbish like St Kilda where they have to worry every year that Harvey or Gehrig or Aussie Jones or Justin Peckett or Aaron Hamill might retire - because other than Fev, Lance, and Stevens, our kids are all going to be hitting their straps together.... and that will be in every position on the field.

So there will be none of this balancing of the list (until the 'older' group starts to hit about 26 or 27) because we have it all coming together from the beauty of a clean sheet. The results should be fearsome... just give us this year's crop of youngsters, and then the lot in 2007. I think you'll find premierships are the result.

Hird

Lloyd
Johns
Lovett Murrey
Rioli
Ramanaskus

It's fairly depressing to see how much we have lost in terms of pride - that we can be satisfied with scraping home a draw against a bottom side with 1/3 of their best players out (compare that to our 2 outs - a 1st year draftee and a journeyman). Whilst murphy might be one of our top players - if you asked most football followers to list essendons top 5 players, then hird, fletcher, lloyd and mcphee would be firmly entrenched within most peoples list.

So - if we hold off on the positives thread (basically youth getting more groundtime/experience) - how did people really see the game? Where are we at? Do Essendon* (on #players injured throughout the year) deserve to be ranked higher than carlton? (much like 2002 when injuries made us look a lot worse than we were)

4Th are we on the same frequency? I posted this on the Rd 16 positives thread and as you can see not so positive:

"Positives?? We could only draw against them with the following out of their team - Hird, Fletcher, Lloyd & McPhee. Surely they were ripe for a beating?? Am i reading this wrong?? Does this mean their replacements assuming they were young players are more advanced than ours? Or did some of their mid rangers turn it on today?

I don't like this result - this half game phenomena reminds of last year!!"

Just to pull you back from the dizzy heights of a 2010 premiership, we ain't the only club re-building here!

There are lots of sides out there that will threaten to win a premiership in the next 5-8 years before Carlton does!

What it will come down to is how good our youngsters actually are. You can't say for sure that our young blokes are better than Essendons or Hawthorns cos we just do not know yet. The only exception to this would be the 1st round picks (Murphy for example or maybe a father-son pick - Hawkins for the Cats next year). Event then it is usually the top 10 that show promise.

Hate to be blunt.

I hope I am wrong. However, it is very good to see us finally start to re-build like this instead of drafting players discarded by other clubs (they have been discarded for a reason Denis!!).

Lets just hope we have drafted the right kids.

you hipe for yours and let me do what i please - it never ceases to amaze me the people who need to be 'blunt' or to be 'truthful' or to be 'logical' or to be 'honest' or to be 'insert own word' ...

Fact is I'll think what I like, post what opinions I like (within the rules), and take your 'bluntness' as I see it - the need to protect a weak heart from the great flights of human imagination. Courage oh teetering on the edge of collapse one, failures are stepping stones!

Hope springs eternal in this little bluebagger heart!

I am just practicing what you are preaching dannyboy! :P

I am entitled to an opinion just as much as you are. Don't sook if my 'BLUNTNESS' offends you.

I love being honest, frank, candid, direct, open sincere, rational, reasonable and straight forward and will continue to be!

you forgot chicken-hearted in your stirring string of senseless self-platitudes.

secondly shame with all those qualities you lack the ability to see a joke

and I quote

Flag for 2010!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Our third in a row Cool

now, seriosuly oh honest one, do you think anyone believes we will win 3 in a row

but you, oh truthful on forgot that line, the little face after it

and, like so many 'blunt' people, took a part out of context and made it your whole (sort of like saying to a lass you've got a big hard one and then delivering 3 inches of useless fleshy liquid!)

now keep going baggers cos I am soooo sooking the laughter is beginning to hurt (rather like the lies whispered in the ears of the 'frank' ones in the dark.

When speaking with other my mates about "who has the worst fans in the AFL" I often highlight Essendon* and Collingwood.

Now when one of them says "Nah......All you Carlton fans are flower" I can now think of you and say "yeah, I know of at least one that is".

Thanks for bringing me to my senses.
