I think Thornton will start on Pavlich..did well on Lucas and is our premier defender. Pavlich relies on delivery to his leads rather than body on body marking or wrestling so its the old story of winning the midfield and applying pressure before it gets to Pavlich....
Lance may start forward if we are serious about winning the game...Freo have not exactly got a great star studded defense...I think its a game we can win with Fisher and Waite better for the run.....thats if we want to win

My defensive matchups would be:

McPharlin - Thornton
Longmuir - O'hAilpin
Pavlich - Walker
Medhurst - Carrazzo
Farmer - McGrath
Whitnall loose man in defence.

OR

McPharlin - O'hAilpin
Longmuir - Whitnall
Pavlich - Thornton
Medhurst - Walker
Farmer - Carrazzo

i like the 2nd one more, pavlich is taller and stronger than walker and even walker's 'incredible' leap wont help him match it for height. i think you've got it pretty good in your 2nd one and if t-bird on pav doesnt work, we can always make the switch just gotta make sure we dont do it too late.

Only 2cms taller, but a fair bit heavier.

Walker gives away 2cm, and 14kg to Pavlich.

He also gave away 1cm, and 11kg to Croad, but he did a job on him. Not that Croad is anywhere near as good as Pavlich.

Also Pav likes to take his marks mainly on the lead, which will suit 1AW.

And if Pav moves further up the ground in to the midfield, or defence, then Tex can go with him. Which means that we don't have to change our matchups around.

I dont think Walker belongs anywhere near Pavlich and should be played up the ground....Pavlich will just post him up in the goalsquare(excuse the basketball lingo) and outmuscle him...Pavlich does get his marks from leading but will stay at home if given a smaller and much lighter player.
What are we trying to do with AW?..teach him how to play FB?...he isnt a key defender and shouldnt be getting these jobs on bigger stronger players who will just push him around and get him injured.
I would prefer AW to play on Heath Black and have a run up the ground and give him some freedom....give Hartlett a game and educate him. ..dont try and cover holes by murdering a player who isnt designed to play in those key defensive positions....

Get the big irishman on Pav. As other posters have said, nothing to lose. In terms of matchups, Santy can run with him, he can duke it out in the muscle stakes and he can compete in the air at a contest. Sure experience and disposal might let him down, but he wont ever get experience if he doesnt get to play.

I'd just love to see somebody approaching the size and speed of Pavlich play on him against us. In years gone by he has killed us either by leaving Lance in his tracks on a lead, or by monstering a smaller opponent.

Santy would be a tough match up for Pav, as long as the midfield can put pressure on the disposal out of the middle.
