Sounds semi-reasonable, and without turning this into a Pagan thread signing him again last year for the same amount of money I would assume - was a mistake. That was like someone who can only afford a Hyundai buying an Audi (was going to say Porsche, but DP isn't in that catergory).

AFAIK Pagan took a pay cut when he extended the contract.

But not a significant pay cut, at least as reported in the press. It was something like $50K out of $700. It was more a case of being able to announce that they had re-signed him and received a pay cut.

This is sort of related, but I keep hearing about how whilst we have reduced a significant portion of our debt we are having big cash flow problems. Can someone please explain what this means, in terms of a football club?

The board utilised moneys from Waverley, relocation to TD, Heroes etc to retire debt.
They then crossed their fingers that increased crowds, membership, corporate support and merchandise from an improving team would pay the day to day running of the footy club including the servicing of remaining debt.

Thats their plan. Pay and pray.
No initiative, no creativity, no courage.

Who should replace the board? Good question, to which I can only hope is a combination of people such as Gleeson, Brown and others who were rumoured to be forming an alternative ticket before the last AGM, but it didn't materialise.

The greatest travesty performed by the clowns currently in charge is that they have allowed the once strong Carlton brand to deteriorate, rather than resurrecting it in the manner Eddie did with Collingwood when he took over. It's been argued that the damage from being draft cheats was a primary reason for our image decaying, but I see that as being only one element of many, and reflected more on individuals, rather than the club.

When the current board took over, they spent more time and effort dumping on the previous committee than being positive, and everyone in the club joined the chorus of how poorly we'd been treated by the AFL.

What should've occured was our board getting on the front foot and reinvesting in our brand.

Instead we went for quick dollars and secured sponsors who further dragged down our image and kept crying poor so no decent corporation would touch the club with a barge pole.

When the next committee alternative promotes itself, I want it to include well connected professionals, not well meaning amateurs or people who see reaching the board as the final goal.

Dick Pratt has done much for our club, and maybe he is the one to drive the alternative together, even if he doesn't want to be on the committee again. At least he will be able to influence the right kind of people to stand.

Neither way thanks; there are plenty of other options, and the previous administration were not making money anyway.

No but it was still finding its way into the club.

I really don't know what an alternative set of board members would do so differently as to resurrect or transform our prospects overall. Firstly, I don't see a queue of prospective, high-calibre challengers lining up to take these board positions. Secondly, a footy club is not a run-of-the-mill corporation solely focussed on business operations and generating profits.

Carlton has been put through a near-fatal sanction and had its ability to access the sole means to improve and maximise its most important asset - the playing list - taken away from it. It is a situation not experienced by a club before and one where people who had sufficient foresight predicted would probably bring us to our knees. And it has! We were already at rock bottom and then had the AFL fire a few bullets our way for good measure!

How is a club supposed to continue to flourish and prosper under those circumstances? How do you hope to generate these growing revenue streams when your club is rotting away, year after year, on the bottom of the ladder and producing weekly results that leave you embarrassed? This board may be incompetent or it even may not, but I don't see how anyone could've done a whole lot better. Carlton operates in a saturated football market and has lost the lead in being an innovative, progressive club and the seeds of this decline were sown a LONG, LONG time ago.

Give me some candidates who are supposed to deliver our club to the "promised land" and I'll justify the criticisms
