With the inclusion of Jordan Russell last week, carlton fielded four teenagers (Russell, Murphy, Walker & Betts) and is set to do so again this week. With Josh Kennedy named as an emergency and getting close to selection we may be lining up with five in the coming weeks. Just wondering if anybody with access to stats could post when the last time a Carlton side fielded four teenagers in its starting line up. Exciting times ahead :)

Will depend on wheather Kennedy can get a game before Walker's 20th birthday.

I suppose the selectors decided to give Russell a certain number of games for development reasons. Unfortunately for McGrath, Bannister forced his way into the side through form and as they have allready committed to Russell for X number of games, McGrath was the man to make room for Bannister.

That's the thing about a youth policy - sounds great, but often it means that older players who should be in the team have to make way. You can't have it both ways.

Sometimes the young player will retrospectively earn the selection that wasn't given on merit. Mostly this won't happen.

This is yet another no-win situation for the football department. Wait until young players have been groomed and are ready before selecting them and we slam the selectors for preferring more mature players of lesser potential. Play the young players before they are ready, and we slam the selectors for not picking a side best suited to winning the match (particularly if the young player looks lost).

I like to think about it another way as being a teenager doesn't necessarily mean you're any good. The Blues have 5 top 10 draft picks on their list and so far we've had 3 of them play in matches at once:

* first time was last year when Livo, Russell and Walker v St Kilda t the dome
* 2nnd and 3rd time in Round 1/2 with Livo, Walker and Murphy for Melbourne / Freo;
* 4th time in Round 4 with Russell, Walker and Murphy

Soon we'll get kennedy in and we'll have 4 top 10 picks in our team for the first time EVER. Will we have a game with all 5?

I know the 'any good' rationale breaks down while Livo struggles at the top level on some opponents, but this is the 'cream' other crap clubs have had to enjoy over the past 2 decades while we were out trading for 28 year olds.

Spot on SOS

Let's not forget McGrath hasn't exactly demanded to be picked through form over the past couple of weeks, hopefully all senior players will have to play to a level that they command selection. If they do this we win games, simple really.

I agree with your comment molsey regarding being teenagers doesn't necessarily make them any good. I also believe the number they were taken in the draft is a rough guide to their ability only. In this case however 3 of the 4 selected are their on merit alone, Walker, Murphy & Betts are easily in our best 22. Hopefully Jordan Russell will stake his claim to join them.

He was already dropped once after only one game. They can't keep doing that & not give him a decent run.

To answer your question maybe around 1978. We had Buckley, Harmes, Sheldon, McConville, and maybe one or two others.

And there was a good chance that Hartlett would have fitted into the backline from round 1 if it were not for injury.

Murphy
Walker
Betts
Russell
Kennedy
Hartlett

possibly Bower at some stage.

1 pick in the Top 10 2006

Possible elevation for Jackson and Flint end 2006

1 pick in the Top 10 2007

I'd like to see the club show some faith in Jr, Harts & Blackers and sign them up for another 2 years. Give them the message they're wanted.
If any of our other under 23ers are up for contract renewells sign them up too.

Every time one of the kids gets dropped there are cries on here to give them a set number of weeks to prove themselves before dumping them. Well guess what people, this is the cost. Cant have the cake and eat it too. Sorry to see Cory go down, but if Jordan starts taking steps and in 2 seasons time is fulfilling his potential then any short term hurt we feel at the moment will be long forgotten.

Think of this decision as a long term one, a thought to the future and an investment in youth!
