I had a chat with a reporter on what Neil Craig does at Adelaide ill put it down over the next day or so .

It bwsically highlights how behind we are in our coaching techniques as well as most Victorian clubs.

Footy has changed in every sense.

Just highlighted to me how behind the times people like Denis are in todays game.
Its stepped in science and ground breaking techniques on improving players decision making and working on skills and fitness .

jbee, your criticism of the post only matches your lack of reply to the question - if you can't put substance into a reply - don't do it

Seriously, if Pagan DID leave at the end of the year we're in trouble. We don't have a succession plan (unless its Mitchell????), so we'll have to bring in an outsider... and who's available??? Someone like Gary O'Donnell :?

Peter Jonas?

Or more of an outsider, like a Brett Ratten or :gulp: Mick McGuane???

I would like to see someone who has played the game within the last 5-7 years or someone that obviously has an ability to read the game. I don't know enough about Mitchel other than what I read in the training reports but I'm not sure if that's really the way to go. TD seems to be pretty good at instilling toughness at the clubs that he is associated with, but I am not to sure how much of a strategist he is. I like some of the commentators like Dermie or Gary Lyon as they seem to know the modern game quite well and can speak from their experience and command respect from the players. I was also really impressed with Blight as a coach, he was always innovative, always gave players the confidence to try new things, but if there is one bloke that would be on top of my shopping list it would be John Worsfold. I thought that he was great in his assistant role at the club and I thought it was our loss when he went back to Perth.

Next Carlton Football Coach eh ???
Mitchell can't see it happening :?
Dean no way ready to big a risk :?
Blight lets move forward not backwards ( no disrepect Blighty ) :?

Heres one for some conversation and i quite like the possibility of it, "Lethal Lee" ( that is until i, or someone else comes up with someone better  )

Why not ? If we consider that he is Victorian, and that Clarkson has the Hawthorn job long term, surely Lethal could be a target.
He may not exactly fit the criterea of a recently retired player, but he is recently enough a successful coach, who put together a list of young kids and got the very best out of them.
Now as aging players the coaches expectations are not being met, the time for a change up in Brissie may be fast approaching..

The question however is at what cost and would he do a better job than Pagan. Who knows.

But i'm sure someone here will tell me all about it....

OH and i always liked the idea of Ken Sheldon Coaching, but that is pie in the sky stuff..Not going to happen.. :-D :-D

Yup, with his 3 year contract, and our finances, we can't afford to pay him out and he'l be our coach for a while. Based on that, a hypothetical is a bit of a pointless exercise at the moment...
Only slightly. We'd only have to pay someone like Barry Mitchell just a little more than we're paying now. Given Denis has to be paid anyway whether he coaches or not, as well as Mitch being there anyway, it may not be the big extra financial burden you think.

You would still have to replace Pagan on the coaching Panel. Mitchell becomes Senior Coach, Libba to coach the Bullants and we recruit Brett Ratten as an assistant or make Daniher and Dempsey full-time.

It may not be a huge financial burden, but there would be some extra cost. No idea what Assistant Coaches earn, but say an extra $100k as a starting point.

I'd like to see us take a chance on someone rather than going with another of the Big 4 coaches.

Shaun Rehn is in Brisbane, but must have a clause for a senior job, and would surely move for it.

Brian Royal has certainly done his apprenticeship, but has probably missed his chance.

Marcus Ashcroft is highly thought of.

John Longmire would certainly know all about the modern style of coaching having worked with Paul Roos for a long time. Hopefully would have his own ideas so we dont end up with the exact Sydney style.

Sentimental choices such as Ratten, Silvagni, Dean, Bradley. Its a pity Fraser Brown hasn't moved into coaching.

Mark Harvey ?

Lethal would want a fortune and there is some talk he may not coach after he finishes at Brisbane....there is of course Steven Silvagni..my tip like i said before would be Barry Mitchell with a supporting cast of SOS and maybe Ross Lyon who is now with Swans...
I would see Mitchell on probation for maybe a couple of years and then SOS as the fallback option.....

Shaun Rehn would be worth a look. It's been mentioned before as he would have the grounding as a player in a successful team. He is working under a successful coach (Leigh Matthews) at the moment in a different environment and importantly he has experience as a senior coach in a high level competition. That is a big plus. In effect he has done his apprenticeship already. He knows what the pressure is like to make the crunch decisions.
The thing I like about him is that when he was coaching at West Adelaide he really pumped up the youth program, probably too good in the end because half his club kept getting drafted. Only query is and people in Melbourne would have to answer this is and that being a coach of team competing with 9 other clubs for support, exposure etc. Would he be media savy enough??

if Pago did go, I couldn't see Elshaug remaining at the club

Rehn for coach
Paul Hudson assistant coach
Dempsey and Daniher to stick around for the older heads

What about Rob Walls.

He's a proven premiership coach.
He's tough but fair - a good combination for our young list.
I don't believe he would play players simply on reputation or because "there's no-one else".
Laid all the hard work down for Brisbane's era of greatness.
A great tactician of the game and has kept abreast of developments in the tactical side of the modern game due to his special comments job in the media.

I have been a member of the "let Pagan do his job" club for a long time but I am starting to agree with the agitators - he just doesn't seem to have any fresh ideas, and I am starting to worry that some of our better youngsters will start looking elsewhere when their contracts are up if we don't start giving them some hope of future improvement.

Shaun Rehn sounds good.

I have been a Pagan fan but I think it will be time for him to move on at seasons end.

Make sure the selection process is professional and thorough for a start...

...and make sure Mark Harvey gets an interview.
