Count me in for the annual change.
Every year we have a new away strip and the club pockets the cash.
It shouldn't be too difficult to sell 1500-2000 of them if people know they'll only be available for 12-18 months from the time of release. It'll also create a decent market for auctioning off players' jumpers as there'll be limited numbers.
The Carlton Shop currently sells guernseys for $110. If they can sell 2000 extra away strips the club pockets $220,000 less costs. There are enough freaks and collectors out there who'll buy one every year to keep the numbers reasonably healthy even if it's a dog of a design in any given year.
Also, it's obviously difficult for people to agree on a design. Changing it annually means that if you don't get the one you want (which will be a majority of supporters if this thread is anything to go by) then there's a chance you will the following year.
The other advantage of changing it annually is that it gives the original jumper an exalted position in comparison (being used year after year) rather than it just being one of two jumpers.
First problem, GWS, is that the club doesn't pocket the cash, it only pockets a small slice of profit. The AFL is the one who reaps the rewards, as owner of all licensing rights and trademarks to all the clubs.
Second problem is cost. If a new jumper is brought out ever 12 months, you can't in all honesty expect to get away with charging $110 or more each. The AFL, or club, should be expected to give some ground on cost, which is made up in volume sales.
Not a fan of a constant change. It's change for change's sake, as someone has already said in this thread. Only bring in the alternative for supposed clashes.
