I support Eddie all the way.
Good on him for sticking up for his club heritage. Just cause some marketing wally straight out of his 3 years at Uni is trying to earn his wages by coming up with marketing ideas doesn't mean Collingwood or any other club should be forced to do something they don't want.
Eddie is spot on and comparing this to Elliott is wrong. Eddie is passionate about his club and its heritage - Elliott was a troublemaker on everything and after his own glory.
If any club is FORCED to change their guernsey it only goes to prove that the AFL is run by dictators with no ability to compromise on key points. ... not a good omen for the competition in my view.
I don't like Carlton's alternative grey outfit either..
"we are the navy grays?" - i don't get it. - tell the marketing guru in his suit to sod off.
Ok then so answer me these questions:
1. How is it all about marketing? Obviously clubs would market the new strips but the real intent is to avoid the jumper confusion for the audience and players. I struggle sometimes to work out our blokes from theirs when we play Melbourne!! Collingwood and Nth are a nightmare, remember when we had B&W TV??
2. Let me see, a powerful politically aggresive club president in charge of a powerful financial mountain of a club that is declaring his club too big and powerful to comply with the same rules that all of the other clubs have already acquiesced to. This is not a general proposal/idea/suggestion, but a new rule of the AFL!! Basically, a rule might be OK for everybody else, but not for him. Nope nothing like Elliot at all, just a nice boy from Broady!!!
3. Clubs being forced to change their Guernesy ?? It is only a change or alternate strip being proposed for use when there are obvious clashes. If there is a better way I am sure the AFL would be all ears but most every other sporting code around the world that faces this problem has already come up with the alternate strip scenario. Good enough for Real Madrid and Manchester Utd, but not for Collingwood!!!
Put your heart back on your sleeve and engage your brain before jumping to conclusions!!!!
re- point 1 - North have already agreed to change their guernsey. If they are happy to do it - then good on them. Collingwood want to hold onto what is precious to them and in their case that is their guernsey. North may have something they value - like arden street oval, which the afl may try to take from them to build a casino or something else - then they will kick a stink up about that.
re- carlton vs melbourne - i make out the teams fine... as long as one team wears white shorts and the other coloured - fine.
re - point 2 - so what you are saying is that everyone should fall in line with the AFL on every point. Yes, Eddie has used his media power to battle for what he believes is right for his club - it would be negligent if he didn't. Elliott was a bully who fought over everything without consulting his constituents (members).
The answer to solve this problem is for Eddie to do a poll on their internet site on how many coll. members are keen to change their guernsey and how many aren't.
Elliott NEVER consulted his members.
re -point 3
quoting what they do in soccer is the worst thing you could do from my viewpoint. Australian Football is older as an organised competition and has more tradition than soccer - so they can alternate their precious little soccer strips as much as they want - i am not interested.
I think the mindset on this topic is that we automatically fall in line with whatever is done overseas. bow to the might of european sports that are played at least 33% by girls - volleyball, netball, soccer etc.... really all eddie is doing is showing some pride in his heritage. If the members vote to change it then so be it.
