Dull, humourless, stereotypical Mitchell appears to me to be about as inspiring as a block of cement.
I would suspect the people who know Mitch away from footy or those who remember his antics with Luke O'Sullivan would laugh at that comment Gerry.
Mitchell would be one of the best instructional and educational coaches in the caper.
He never acts impulsively and his dressing down of Bower would have been measured and well thought out.
On several occasions I've seen Mitchell have a quiet word to Bower about running forward when the ball is in dispute and for not giving the ball off to a better option.
A couple of weeks ago, a senior player gave Bower a big bake for trying to do it all himself.
Obviously Mitchell thought a spray was the best option as the slowly/softly approach obviously wasnt working.
It always should be displayed to all the players that if a player puts their own interests before the teams, they will suffer the consequences and Mitchells actions would have achieved that.
Mitchell doesnt try to be the players best mate but he offers far more scope for initiative and creativity than most other coaches.
As long as the team rules are not compromised.
Bower will be a quality player but only if he understands the basic principles of team play.
He wont learn from anyone better.
I think we undervalue the abilities of Barry Mitchell.
He gives every opportunity to players to learn. His only aim is to improve the youngsters and make them AFL players.
He played over 200 games, won a B&F in a team full of gun players, a leading goalkicker for the Swans and was a All Australian.
He was short, slow and his kicking lacked penetration but he knew how to get the pill.
Our kids are in good hands.
