Preistey's letter to Members
Quote:
While our club has agreed that working towards adjusting access to father son and NGA talent was necessary over the long term to ensure a more equitable system, our club’s position has been absolutely clear that for any proposed rule changes, they had to come with an appropriate runway so as not to disadvantage specific clubs.
Part of the clear case we put forward was that the AFL had to allow all clubs to properly plan and prepare for any changes to draft rules, in order to provide the same runway that previous clubs have been afforded, and as a result, have significantly benefited from.
This was the only appropriate and truly equitable way to implement such changes however today’s discretionary decision by the AFL has gone against this, with full knowledge that it will disadvantage certain clubs more than others, which no AFL rule change should.
So, we all agree the AFL has completely dismissed any of Carlton's views on changes to the Draft. We all agree the AFL has not treated us fairly with this. We all agree the clubs who were allowed to milk the Draft with latter picks, will continue with that advantage over teams who havent the same opportunity to replenish their lists.
What are we doing about it?

Despite the lack of an appropriate runway for such rule changes, through discussion and consultation we have seen the 10% discount retained for all clubs that do not make the top 10.
Irrespective, our club has put itself in a strong position as it relates to our upcoming father son and NGA talent considerations.
Nothing.
Accepting that the AFL chooses to completely ignore the requests for fairness of its treatment of Carlton, and accepts the disadvantage the AFL has enforced on Carlton.
Spin it however you like Preistly, but imo, you have given up on the club's right to defend its position in a court of law.
This is a farce. Farcical from our President and Board as a response, and farcical the size of the runway AFL has offered the competition for 2026.
In any man's language the AFL have been too late in making a call at the end of April for this November's Draft. That doesn't need explanation.
Priestley has got too many problems retrieving the Saudis money to be tied up in courtrooms over footy.
