I'd think it's Young forward/ruck. I like the idea of Derksen forward but unfortunately he hasn't been trialled in that spot in our VFL team.
I'd like to have seen Flynn Young come in for Kemp but 4 changes is already quite a big change to the structure. At least Flynn Young leads at the ball carrier instead of scurrying out the back for the easy kicks. People knock our forward entries/kickers but very few of our forwards are willing to work off their defender and lead at the ball carrier. Instead they want it lobbed into a space between players. Lazy.

13 players missing from the corresponding game last year
Also 6 of the leading goal kickers from that game who scored 18 goals between them are not playing.
Anyone who remotely thinks this will be a repeat of Good Friday last year are dreaming

I liked the way our midfield worked in the pre season with Cerra... but it has to be at the expense of either Hewett or Cripps.

One of them needs to be resting in the f50 or rotating off the bench.

100%

Hewett did a lot more than his 36m show.
Was dealt a horrible injustice with the holding ball decision.
It’s the goal from that injustice people remember.
He’s our best defensive mid.

Cerra comes in to replace Lord

When I upgraded AFL members tix for this game, the Carlton barcodes weren't working (should have been an omen) by the time I got thru I could only get level 2 which is more than double the price of level 1.

Then I booked a carpark thinking it'd be cheaper for a group of us and Jacinta made PT free the next day.

uhhh i dunno ck. it's pretty hard to make any kind of argument for a mid to not to get dropped when they're leading the afl among mids in least metres gained. 367 metres gained over 3 games is so diabolical.

I get you point and empirically sound
It’s a strange one Braithy.
One the one hand Walsh gains 400m and criticised of bombing it to gain territory, yet, I assume he is commended for metres gained?

No mention of Hewett or Walshy opponents. In fairness there should be.

I prefer Hewett over Lord, respectively, at this stage of both their careers, but I’m hopeful this year Lord passes him. Hewett is our best defensive mid.

I’ve seen Hewett bashing in the past. Cripps doesn’t defend at all.
We have a problem no doubt. Not sure it should be heaped on Hewett.

Very happy seeing ALL the ins

Very happy with the omissions

Kemp better do something extraordinary for me to be happy.
In my books he’s not a good ordinary player yet.
Gave up hoping when he wasn’t going to make it as a ruck rover.
Not tall enough to be….
Not quick enough to be…

One of the rare players we have in that 23-25 yo group

Was Hewett ever a big metres gained guy? I've always seen him as an extractor who handballs more than he kicks and often handballs backwards to the outside kicker. Metres gained aren't the be all and end all, otherwise Gov and Acres would be TC heroes.

You’re a good one GE. Articulate and Measured (pardon the pun)

That’s how I see him. Does the little things well: blocking , shepherding, defending, tapping, tackling.

I’m sure all eyes will be on him today.

I watch Ben carefully, living in hope he’s going to make it.
He’s a very good tackler for his age and his strength gives me hope.
Sure in VFL he’s an accumulator, but a lot of his disposals don’t hit targets.

I can’t see anything that screams he’s going to produce anything Hewett can.
Hewett can do the things Ben bring# plus added strength and experience.

Ben needs to dominate VFL, not just pick up ball an$ handball to a…hopeful target.
I just don’t see it, and I think people are being fanciful he’s going to make it, rather than ready made.
Can see the desire to see if he sinks or swims, but 4 points are more important.

We have enough/ too many kids playing in this team already. Count them.
Develop in the VFL and bash the door down

Norths midfield will be way to quick for us simply can’t play Cripps and Hewitt in the same side and then put Cera in as well makes us even slower 60plus points beating coming up

I know North mids are quick. Who do you suggest Kathy?

Cerra makes us even slower? You want to add speed and you think Cripps and Hewett and Cripps are quicker?

No way.

Give us suggestions of your preferred AND our best midfield group.

I like Cerra Walsh Smith, mixing it with Cripps Hewett and Williams

Harbour a desire to see Cowan in there too.

Small forwards need to be explosive and believe cameos in middle are ok but not for long periods eg Byrne (one day) Ainsworth.

I think Cripps spends too much time in middle and loses impact in 2nd halves. Ditto Hewett.

Rotations are the ticket imo.

Just got back from Bali. Watched last weeks game in a sports bar there, same time.

Hopefully you have a much better experience than I did Bondi!

Hewett has to go to Wardlaw IMO. If Wardlaw goes to Cripps to break the tag, the captain has to show some accountability and sacrifice his game a bit to limit the Roos gun.

Forward line full of statues with tickets on themselves, especially in the 2 nd half. Forwards have to work hard to get a break from their opponent to create OPTIONS. The bombing forward is a result of the options provided.

I’m not a huge fan of Flynn…yet… but he has a weapon of speed and kicks straight. Speed creates a gap, and the boy can mark.

Harry Lewis and Gov give us a minimum 2 marking forwards when Lewis is in the ruck. I think our structure would be fine without Kemp. If Kemp continues to play the Charlie role with his hand up for the ball, what’s the point when his opponent is taller, or there’s 2 of them.

I want to see constant movement in forwardline for 4 quarters.

Why was Hayward so quiet last week? I wasn’t at the game.

My gut feel for the last couple years is our No 1 ruck has tired carrying the load for 80% game time because our 2nd ruck hasn’t been good enough or we couldn’t afford to lose Harry from CHF with Charlie the statue at FF, or, HOK non competitive.

Said before game last week, Pitto needs to save energy for last quarter to quell, if not beat Gawn.

Oppo rucks in 2 nd halves have belted ball clear of contests because Pitto stopped jumping into them.

Pitto is an honest trier but he’s not building on his stamina as he matures. That’s life for Pitto. Gawn on the other hand started rucking for 60% GT, and now can ruck 90%. He has effectively willed his team to win on 2 occasions in the last quarter, when his No 1 oppo has tired.

No excuse today with no Xerri. Our 2 nd ruck, Lewis or Harry or even Cripps should be enough to keep the oppo rucks on notice.

I expect Cripps and Hewett to dominate today with Pitto putting the ball in close to contest where they like it and usually win it.
