There should be a whole bunch playing their first ever Carlton game against Syd. Probably the most in one game since pagan's bargain basement recruitment drive at the end of 03

Based on last night I'd probably go for:

B: Dean - L. Young - Boyd
HB: Florent - Derksen - Williams
C: O. Hollands - Cripps - Chesser
HF: Ainsworth - McKay - Smith
F: Evans - Kemp - Hayward
R: Pittonet - Hewett - Walsh

INT: Lord - E. Hollands - Saad...

... and then I honestly do not know.

It'll be one of Reidy or O'Keeffe, and probably McGovern.

Personally I think McGovern is surplus to requirements, and I have not been hugely impressed with either of the back-up rucks. I also think Saad has become a somewhat peripheral player. Williams gets a game mostly due to his versatility. Fogarty *might* get a game because he's clearly a coaching staff favourite... Moir is a possibility, but isn't a 4-quarter player yet. Similarly, Byrne would have been the perfect sub. F. Young probably has too many players ahead of him in the positions he plays.

It's not a terrible spot to be in, with half-a-dozen players due back by our third game. Whoever does play the first two matches will have to perform to keep their place in the side.

Out for the year - Motlop

Out for most of the year - O’Farrell

Out for at least a month (Dees or later) - Cerra, Cottrell, Haynes, Acres

Doubtful for Sydney, chance for Richmond - Cowan, Carroll, Newman

Likely for Sydney - Weitering, Walsh

Not sure which way we’ll go with the talls.

Weitering, Dean, Derksen is good confidence levels.
Pittonet is the #1 ruck. O’Keeffe would be handy, but Reidy has his measure.
McKay, Kemp & one of the rucks?… ok on paper but the mediums are too far back at the moment.

I think I’d be going with:

B: Dean Weitering Saad
HB: Williams Derksen Florent
C: O.Hollands Cripps Chesser
R: Pittonet Hewett Walsh
HF: Smith McKay Hayward
F: Ainsworth Kemp Evans
I: Reidy Lord

Probably McGovern who is useful on either flank
Probably Elijah who can match Hayward’s workrate

I think we’re pretty good for transition, so I’d be leaning towards one of Moir or Ison up forward. Both are useful as change up mids as well.

Eight or nine new faces.

Backs
Dean, Florent, McGovern, Saad, L.Young, Weitering, Williams (I/C)

Wings
Chesser, O.Hollands, E.Hollands (I/C)

Rucks
Pittonet, Reidy (I/C)

Mids
Cripps, Hewitt, Walsh, Lord (I/C)

Forwards
Ainsworth, Evans, Hayward, Kemp, McKay, Smith, Byrne (I/C)

NB-
* McGovern is just keeping the seat warm for Haynes.
* Saad & Williams will need to lift when the real stuff starts. Boyd, Carroll, Cowan, Newman & Wilson will be pushing for their spots in the coming weeks.
* Derksen plays if Weiters doesn’t come up.
* I thought L.Young’s preseason form was better than some have suggested. Yes, he had a brain fart or two, but looked more agile and confident to me. It’s good to have Derksen in reserve if it’s a false dawn for LY.
* Chesser has done enough to get the nod for a wing spot with Acres, Carroll & Cottrell out. Let’s hope he grabs his opportunity and stays healthy. It’s interesting that L.Campo didn’t get a run in the seniors this preseason - twelve months ago he was fast tracked into the round 1 team.
* I reckon we can play both Pitto & Reidy. Happy for HOK to build some continuity in the VFL. Pitto looks invigorated at the moment, and Reidy looks nice and combative.
* Eight Carlton debutants in the side!

Derksen needs to play. Can play forward or back. And what a nice story, him playing his 1st AFL game.

And he has done everything right. Have to reward that.

I am pleased we have him. I love how he goes about it. Somehow feel safer with him around the ball than Lewis Young. Lewis just doesnt like contact. And he just looks so unsure when he has the ball. Whereas Derksen has a nice kick and slows the play down and actually thinks about what he is doing.

Derksen for me !!

Do they play the same role though? I don’t see it that way.

I think it’s a choice between Derksen and L.Young. We can only play them both if Weitering doesn’t come up. It’s up for debate, and not a popular opinion, but I would have L.Young very slightly ahead of Derksen at the moment. That could easily change quickly though. In time, Derksen might also be an alternative option to Kemp up forward. But I don’t think he’s competing for the same spot in the team as McGovern.

I think McGovern’s spot will come under serious scrutiny when Haynes, Cowan, Carroll & Newman are match fit and available.

Looks like Newman is out, so I'd probably bring Saad in.

Other than that I reckon you're on the money

Na Sidey , definitely not worth contesting . I was at the Magoo's praccy yesterday and the incident happened right in front of me . It was a clumsy act from a rusty footballer who badly timed his run . And what made it worse he was airborne when he slammed into the kid . Great credit to the Geelong boy who was under the ball and stood his ground knowing he was gonna be crunched . Very courageous lad . Newmans reaction said it all . He stood there non plussed with that " what the fruck have I done " look on his face . New instantly new he frucked up . Cop it and move on .

Newman should not play next week regardless of the suspension.

Selection integrity.

Has Moir done enough? Would HOK be an alternative to give us genuine 2nd tall and ruck relief?

No I don’t think Moir has done enough. He needs to go back to the Ressies and show some passion and desperation. And only then does he be in consideration to come back in. Would rather try Flynn Young to be honest.

If Weiters is available then Dean comes out. It's nice that Flynn Young is banging down the door. I'd be interested to know where Billy Wilson is as there are opportunities.
