Monahan and Duffy have really only played in defense, especially Duffy. I wouldn’t say either Kemp or Duffy are Key Position material.

That’s fair enough.

I think they were pegged as defenders because Monahan was a bit lost in starvation corner & their natural game in the Gaelic is facing towards goal.

For all I know, they’re the midfield speed we’ve been lacking.

Third year for Monahan.

The Best 23

B: Cowan Weitering Haynes
HB: Florent Dean Newman
C: Hollands Cripps Cottrell
R: Pittonet Hewett Smith
HF: Hayward Kemp Walsh
F: Ainsworth McKay Williams
I: Carroll Saad O’Keeffe Cerra Moir

That’s not so bad. Way more motion in the front half & enough defenders if Vossy wants to set that high line that he loves.

And, just for good measure…

The Rest 23

B: Boyd L.Young Charleson
HB: Wilson <SSP> L.Camporeale
C: Acres Lord Chesser
R: Reidy Ison B.Camporeale
HF: Binns Duffy Evans
F: Fogarty <SSP> Motlop
I: O’Farrell Monahan <ND> <ND> <CatB>

McGovern, Hollands, White & F.Young all gone.
O’Farrell to the LTI. Take your time lad. We need the spot.
2x mature bookends to trial over summer.
2x mids in the draft with Dean & Ison.
1x Cat. B (indigenous) on the league’s dollar.

Devoid of any hyperbole McGowan is ond of the best writers in the caper particularly about drafts and trades.

The Article is very pertinent to what we are discussing in this thread really worth a read

Good post. A few random comments:

* Weitering, L.Young & HoF (LTI) are the only key defenders on our list. The other options (Dean, Haynes, Cowan, M.Carroll) are not suited to the body-on-body against 195+cm forwards. Dean might be eventually, but not yet. I hope we target depth in that position in the SSP. I would be going for a mature age player who can provide depth for a couple of years while HoF recovers/develops. Charlie Dean, Sam Frost, Jacob Blight, Ethan Phillips are the types I would invite to training.

* Give McGovern a one year contract to give us depth in attack. If Kemp goes down again, McGovern wouldn’t be the worst option to have in reserve.

* Cottrell, Kemp, Newman and Smith will be like new recruits for us. I wonder if Newman will be based in defence or the wing?

* If we have to cut a contracted player, I would rather it be Binns or Boyd than E.Hollands. We obviously don’t know the full story, but I would be very disappointed in the club’s professionalism if we’re moving EH out the door because he’s unpopular with a certain higher profile teammate (as rumoured). Based on on-field performance (which is what matters most ultimately), EH is well ahead of Binns & Boyd in my opinion. Unless EH is in legal trouble again, I really hope we honour his contract. Handcuff him to Boak over the summer.

* White & F.Young are a bit unlucky but unfortunately I think they have to be moved on. If it’s a choice between the two, I’d lean towards keeping F.Young.

* I would be cutting my losses with the Irish lads.

Good post !! I would cut Fogarty ahead of F Young. We have enough smaller forwards now not to have to rely playing Fogarty. We liked him for his tackling and pressure, but that went away last season.

White is a dime a dozen player. Boyd - we have enough smaller running backs now with Florent. Would rather develop Wilson.

Dont know how many spots we need though.

Good point. Docherty made a comment that the senior players weren’t happy with the list decisions last year. Can’t really blame them. We had everything banked on this senior group and we didn’t see it through

They had their opportunity and it was the players who weren't capable of seeing it through. Docherty is a sook and Charlie has shown himself to be ones as well.
Good riddance. The club is here to build sustainable success. Giving players a chance to participate in finals isn't our mission. It's to build for premierships.
Personally I'm happy to see the back of a few of them.

Hayward will be great value. He'll play the Jack Martin role we missed badly this year. A mid sized forward who can impact in the air and is dangerous on the ground. People can talk him down but he's averaged over 30 goals per season the last 5 years. How many of our players have done that?
Wing has been an issue for us for a number of years and Florent/Chesser will be a great combination if Chesser can stay fit.
Ainsworth will be great value as well.
Put Ainsworth, Hayward, Florent, Chesser, Jagga, Newman, a fit Cerra, a fit Walshy, a stronger HOK and Dean into our 2025 team and it's significantly better IMHO.

The unpredictability ahead of the ball will be a huge bonus. People forget we were a top 4 scoring team in 2024. The capability is there. We didn't lose the ability to be a high scoring team overnight. It was structure.
We were too busy using our forwards to protect our leaky midfield which impacted our ability to have a strong, effective forward set up.
Get Jagga, a fit Walsh and a fit Cerra with quality and quick wingers around them, and our scoring power will quickly return.
I don't buy the doom. I'm hanging to see what we can produce in 2026.

Calling Docherty a sook, are you serious? That guy put his body through more than any other player to represent the club.

A bit harsh yes, but has been throwing subtle jabs at the club doing the media circuit since he was forced out. He was cooked but thought he could go again, so unsurprising there’s some bitterness there.
