He left the Footy Dept at Collingwood in a bit of a mess - although it wasn’t his call that left it in the triumvirate charge of Bolton, Leppitch and Macrae, which was a circus, any wonder they missed the eight.

I hope he has a better solution in store for us.

Time for a bump with the news Wright will be taking over in July… presumably so he can rip the place up before the draft etc.

A good read, a few players will be shitting themselves.
It could explain the lack of on-field cohesion.

Quote:
There has been nothing attached to Wright's actions to suggest Voss won't be coach next year, but there are indications that his support staff will be bolstered, both in coaching and management.

Wright will also play a key role in transforming the Carlton list – which clearly lacks quality small forwards, as well as modern, play-driving half-back flankers and it also has questionable midfield depth.

The key forward space may also be looked at by Wright. Charlie Curnow and Harry McKay may have won three Coleman Medals between them, but as the Blues use the bye period to review their first 11 games of 2025, it is known that there has been a disappointment expressed in their lack of consistent impact. It would be interesting to see Wright's reaction if a rival club made a serious offer for one of those two.

Wright, Voss and all key Carlton officials retain hope that ruck Tom De Koning will reject St Kilda's mind-blowing financial offer, but they are all seasoned realists and know that his failure to re-commit to the Blues by late May of the season in which he enters free agency is not encouraging. And plans are already being crunched to use the financial and national draft pick currency that would present in his exit.

The sooner we get rid of the elephant in the room the sooner we get back our focus on team. Who is this big black cloud? TDK. He can't afford to get injured, can he?

I know the circus continues next year with Walsh, but I'm sure Walsh is not being offered $1.7M by anyone, but will be handsomely rewarded to stay, and he knows the impact contracts have on the team.

maybe it takes walsh and tdk to leave for the club internally to understand spreading the wealth among a few (in cap space) is not the way modern winning teams win.

all of our draft eggs into jagga was more kreuzer, gibbs, murphy thinking where one star is going to change our fortunes. when in reality you need guys who can play high level afl on every line. not one star surrounded by 4 chimpanzees and a baboon.

walsh
cripps
charlie
harry
weiters

that's too many millionaires on one list. how many do the pies have? one million dollar player in naicos?

I would say Pendles, Sidebottom, and Moore would also be on a mil at least.

Don't know.

Pies are still pay part of Grundy's million dollar contract.

If you're going to define Weiters, Walsh, Charlie and Harry as million dollar players then the question should be how many Pies players are paid $900K?

I wish there was more transparency.

What we do know is in 2024 across every team in AFL:

25 players $1M plus ..............TDK, Cripps
19 players $900K plus............Walsh Weitering Charlie Harry Williams
20 players $800K plus
58 players $700K plus...........Doc,
53 players $600K plus..........Saad, Cerra, Newman
75 players $500K plus..........Gov,
94 players $400K plus..........Hewett Acres, SOS, Cottrell, Pittonet, Haynes
103 players $300K plus.......Hollands, Kemp, Fantasia, Fogarty
104 players $200K plus.......Hollands, Boyd
117 players $100K plus......we have a lot of kids on rookie contracts, including rookies like 28yo Cincotta

$17M Cap. Can't see us spending much more than 95% cap a year

Can take off TDK in 2026, and Williams in 2027. Govs big contract ended in 2023

I believe we only have Cripps as well. Others are in 900-800k category.

We need Williams off the books. What a waste of money that is. There is some relief from that.

You pay Curnow what he is on everyday of the week. He brings bums on seats, kids love him, and is great for marketing our club. On field not great right now, but he is worth the money.

Williams No. McGovern No. We need these salaries off and replaces by younger cheaper guys who provide similar output. Hoping O farrel comes on this year so we don’t think McGovern is a must sign.

i'd go as far as to say whoever thought williams was a 900k a year player at the club, needs to be escorted out of the building by lunchtime today.

if the guillotine was still an acceptable form of punishment, i'd be proposing that, too

No one outside Carlton FC, and more likely List Manager and Football Manager know exactly what each player is paid each year. Figured are elastic for some. WE have to spend 95% of the Salary Cap, so some are front loaded to achieve that figure, and some are back loaded. I like to jot them down when I hear those numbers, like I do when I hear new measurements in height, and once upon a time with weight.

The figures quoted are from media, conversations when contracts were agreed to and signed, bidding wars, In Business network, others. The word gets out.

I'm sure some of the big boys can be as high as 950K with bonuses (KPI's), but all our stars collectively took less than they were offered. That's why TDK might do same, but $5M difference over 7 years is a lot of money to turn away. Weitering was said to be offererrd $1.4M from Saints (which has been questioned more like $1.2), and settled for $900 plus bonuses (eg AA selection, BnF). That's 4-500K over 7 years equates to 2.8-3.5M sacrifice. Harry and Charlie offers were around $1.2, and still are (Swans) and they took $850-900, plus bonuses (eg Coleman and AA, BnF)

Recently, when the word got out that TDK was offered $1.1 (some say its $1M), he would become the only other million dollar player at Carlton. That says it all.

A lot of Williams' and Govs salary was front loaded like Martins because we were not a destination club, and needed to pay above market rate to get them. Similar to what StKilda are doing now. A lot of Crippas salary has been front loaded to make up the 95% SC spend, for both his last 2 contracts.

SC wise we are not in as bad a spot as posters on TC and BF say we are. They are guessing its high because we fail to attract any FA's, but have no problem signing DFA's.

Our problem isnt salary cap. Ours is what's going on between players' ears with decision making, skills of most of our depth players, and because we lack quality depth, injury disrupts us badly when the number exceeds 8 injured.

the major hurdle in bringing houston to the club was we need a similar (800k) player to leave to make room.

if we can't bring in a player like that, and the pies can. that tells me, our cap isn't in a position that's very good?

End of 2020. SOS' last year as List Mgr. He was desperate to get a land another "big fish" to play in the midfield next to Cripps and Walsh.

Gov (2 x 2nd round picks= 1st round pick to Crows) and Williams (UFA from GWS) were SOS' "big fish". SOS sold Jaksch to us in his last year at GWS for something like pick 7, plus a couple peripheral players.

Marchbank,( 1st round pick for Tuohy to Geelong)) Plowman (1st round pick) , Kennedy (2nd round), Setterfoeld (first round pick), Philips, Sumner, Lamb etc etc came from GWS

Looks really bad when you consider his other First round duds Dow, SPS, LOB, Stocker, Philp, Cuningham...and we are yet to see a break out year with Kemp.

I get sick of thinking about SOS post 2016.
