When watching the replay I was struck at how quick Saad’s reactions are and how agile he is in always getting the ball moved on, even if he only has a split second. What do you all think about playing Saad as a small forward? He is solid in defence but he’s not as a effective as he used to be, and he’s couldn’t be any worse than Evans, White, Motlop or Fogarty.
If Saady was a stay at home small forward that would be insanely good. If he had to do the sperinting our small forwards are doing, I don't think he's made for that
How about if we play Saad as the deepest forward and make Charlie and Harry run up and down the ground?
Edit: So we have Charlie and others kicking into space around Saad who can use his agility to run onto the ball, NOT kick it on top of his head. Obviously this means we need players like Boyd and Silvagni fit to replace his position in defence
Sorry Sin - but suggesting Saad up forward is as close as bad as playing Boyd forward last week. The coach who suggested this - well .....
ANYTHING IS WORTH A TRY. Surprises happen when something unexpected happens.
Remember Steve Silvagni the high flying KPF who kicked a few bags....tried FB and became FB of the century.
I was always of a fan of Silvagni in the backline and midfield. But many before the season started s\aid he was too slow. Lucky Vossy doesnt read TC or BF. He's a keeper in defence.
Saady is elusive, quick and has the knack to make time before he kicks... has the attributes to be a small forward imo. Don't know what he is lacking as a forward that Motlop, White, Evans, Durdin, Fogarty, and Williams have. I'd have Saady as a small forward before all other than Williams, who incidently was a HB, but recruited FA as a mid, hence $900K pa. Williams was failing as a defender before being moved forward. If Williams could make it forward, I have no doubt Saad could too....but we need his run from defence. Maybe now that Boyd is back, and Ollie playing HB and Newman on the horizon Saady can be tried forward. Otherwise, he's needed back. I just don't think Saady has the stmina to handle the way Vossy wants his small forwards playing....in defence.
As for Boyd, he played on a wing in the Footscray GF team and played a lot of his VFL for the scrays at HF because of his great kicking skills: could find a forward target and kick a long goal. He became a backman because Carlton tried him there and it worked with his courage and dare.
Last week Vossy subbed Boyd on to stand on Blakey as Evans tired. He was only there for 10 minuutes and swung back as needed as Sydney were peppering their forwad line. He didnt get switched to backline because he failed a s a forward.
