I don’t know what Simpson is like as a coach
But I think someone needs to be in Voss’ ear for sure

Simpson is the best out there imo … he works better with more veteran players than he does, develop kids - hence why eagles was a poor fit.

That gf win against the pies is and will be for a while the best coaching performance I’ve ever seen.

Agree with this.
We had a chance to get in a player such as Houston. He was exactly what we need right now. There is not enough scrutiny on our recruiting team, especially Austin.
We are a mid table side at best with a bulging salary cap. Unless we move on some of our top line players we have little options. We can't afford any top range free agents and to make things worse we do not have a 1st round pick this year.
Too many eggs into the one basket getting Smith unfortunately.

Begs the question .... Does the Coach have much say on who we get (ie: Collingwood) or is that List Management's job? Seems the latter.

Exactly it seems the outer bogan trumps the arm chair experts even though they don't know why the mystery frees are paid?

Probably Elijah - can't remember him missing many from the 40-50 range. And probably Charlie when fit... it's when you get to >50 that he arcs his run and then anything can happen... and <40 he's liable to do something daft, but 40-50 he's quite solid!

Kennedy. Oh, wait...

Missing from our best 23

CHF: McKay ........ replaced by Young
HBF: Newman .... Gov keeps his spot
BP: Boyd ... small defender
Mid: Cincotta ... lose our best tagger
Mid: Smith .......lose our outside speed
HFF: Hollands....lose our goal kicking HF, and good kick
FP: Fantasia .... inform small forward replaced by Motlop

FF: Curnow......was definitely not match ready

SOS moves from CHB to support Curnow
Young goes to CHB on Chol, and ruck to give TDK a chop out

GAME LOWLIGHTS

Carlton hard done by umpires.
Hardwick goal was a charity in the first
Frees in the middle for ??? end up 2 goals for Hawks
Free against SOS after TDKs goal was ridiculous
Hawks caught with 19 on the ground. No auto free or 50m penalty. Ball up :screwy:
Manhandling of Cripps at contests no free. Touch a Hawk and its a "Freekick Hawthorn" call.
Chol pushes Young in the number 33 (back) and marks and goals. No free given to Young.
Hands over Charlies shoulders no frees
Meek had more hit outs to advantage against a tiring TDK.
A couple easy shots at goal hit post
Acres terribly out of form in preseason and continues poor form, yet selected
Wings failed us.
Lost Saad's drive whilst he is a lockdown defender. Miss Boyd.

SOS kicks 1.3
Chol kicks 3.1
Motlop 1.3

Williams 2.0 only 65% game time again. WTF?

Bottom 6 for me were Acres, Kemp, Fogarty, Motlop, Cowan, Young, Gov, Haines, Charlie. That's 7 too many.

HIGHLIGHTS

Intensity great
Contested ball great
TDK, Cripps, Hewett, Cerra, Hollands, Weitering great.
Walsh, Cottrell, SOS, good.
That running goal from TDK (not paid)
That run from the backline by Saad to goal
That running long kick by Doc to Williams.
2 quick goals in a row
Lucas Campo not disgraced and another game under his belt.
Hollands blanketing AA Dylan Moore
TDK's desperation to get us over the line. Was huge.
Young in the ruck actually won when in there.
Docherty's defensive work, stopped a lot of potential Hawks passages.

SUMMARY

If Hawks are the best team in the comp, and we lost by 3 goals with all the above going on, we are not too far off.

Obviously depth is an issue when needing to cover injury. That's next year.

Hopefully Curnow and McKay find form. Hoping for 2 to play together next week, to start their season.

Appreciate the never say die effort, and winning the contested ball and clearances.

Keep up the energy and intensity, and form will come, on the back of that. Saw some glimpses of what could be.

The one that got away....again.

Next, Dogs. Hopefully Boydy and Harry will be back.

Thanks, Bondi. I don't care how bleak it looks to some (and it looked very bleak after last week) it is way too early in the season to be throwing our toys out of the cot. I might be enduring some misery but I don't need to be reading endless 'end is nigh' posts for months on end. Plenty of time for teeth gnashing as finals approach way off in the distance.

Carry on.

It is but I’m a bit concerned our bunch of peanuts are going to keep bombing it on each other’s coconuts and the opposition will give us some chilli and we’ll once again end up in a pickle.

It is interesting reading and we do have certain players that get sucked into the ball too easily, Acres probably the worst. I do look forward to Boyd and possibly Matt Carroll playing in the backline rather than Young and JSOS.

I get where some are coming from about how it’s early in the season and only 2 rounds in.

We are however looking at it from the lens of the last 12 games. It is NOT just confined to this season.

Pros:

Much better effort overall.
TDK and Hewett.
Cripps and Cerra solid.
Another strong performance from Oli.
Williams and SOJ looked dangerous.
Much better effort from Haynes and McGovern and Motlop. Although Motlop has developed a bad habit of soccering the ball instead of bending over and picking it up.
Good 2nd half from Weiters.

Cons:

Not so much incompetent this week. Just looked inferior. Perhaps even more concerning.
Inaccuracy again.
Speed of leg and ball movement.
Way too many dump kicks out of defence.
Not going to win often, if you can't score more than 69 or 60. 2.7 and 2.8 in our 2nd halves is particularly concerning.
Nothing again from our number 1 forward.
Docherty.
I don't know if it's role or fitness or form. But we need Walsh getting more outside ball. His ball use hasn't been very good either.
Not enough from Acres, Fogarty, Cowan, Campo and Kemp. If our stars aren't getting it done, we need a far more even contribution.
Apparently only Crippa throws the ball.

I hate reading about the constant denial too, bud. But I won’t make posts dedicated about that.

Sure we’re 2 games into a new season. But we’ve not developed any wrinkles or shown signs of growth from last year. And over the last 12 games we’ve beaten exactly two teams.

Norf and west coast.

For some, that’s enough writing on the wall to want change and to act proactively to get after said change.

We currently play the worst brand of football in the entire afl. And that’s pretty hard to stomach considering we’re 30 years without a sniff of a flag.

I dunno. Maybe I’m an asshole. I’m pretty sure I am

But it just feels a bit too st. Kilda’ish to be in denial about where we’re at and to not be realistic about our future.

Its true we haven't changed our team since last year.

For those who want to look at the last 12 games, that's fine.

Where the team has changed since last year

Docherty has had a preseason
Charlie is back in the team after playing with a bad ankle since GWS decacle.
DeKoning is back after being out for most of those 12 games, and only playing a half in Elim Final
Cerra and Williams are fit and back in the team
McKay didnt play round 18, 20, 22, 23,

That's a core group of senior players missing in those last 12 rounds, so the point to me is, moot.

I look at the style of play AND the form of players expected to carry out the plan. They are not exclusive.
I don't see any reason to be looking to replace the coach now, nor blow up the place. Hot heads can't see reason when they are on the boil.
I don't think about the past 30 years. Why would you bother? I'm past that. The past is the past. Forget rear view mirrors

Look ahead and see what we need to change.
I can put a great case forward why we should have beaten the Hollywood Hawks, but we didnt, so we move on.
Some want to dwell on the loss and TBH, seem to be stuck in the past.
I saw the same people change the same negative point of view after winning 10 in a row in 2023, and then repeated the same beahviour when we won 5 games in a row convincingly, including smashing Cats, after Scott said that carlton team was the best team cats have faces in the last 5 years. There's omething in that, if you like looking in the past.

Nah, you're an emotional person. I can feel it when you have a head of steam.

Fair enough. You like to show how much you care about Carlton losses.

I know we will turn our fortunes around. Something will click.
Hopefully umpires become fairer as the season rolls out towards teams playing against Hawks and Pies.

I hate that whistle, only to hear "Freekick Hawthorn" when its not.
Sound familiar?

Braithy I often agree with your views but you do have a tendency - usually called out by Bondi- of using incorrect stats to back them up. So I must point out that we've lost 9 of our last 11, not 10 of 12. If you go back 12 games you'll find yourself at the tail end of a 5-match winning streak that includes a demolition of Geelong and of Port Adelaide in Adelaide, and I'm sure you don't want to get into that :D
