I agree that Cripps isn't a natural leader. Trying to do everything yourself to lift the team when it's losing is not sustainable leadership. Leading by example should also mean doing the decoy runs, setting shepherds etc. But moreso it should be instructing people to do those things and exhorting them to get involved and improve.
I guess our problem with captaincy is that we automatically give it to the best player. Like Murph... best player at the time but never looked like a leader, and it probably detracted from his game.
Admittedly it's hard to say who would be a natural captain in our team. Weiters, perhaps. Newman? For those who go to the game, who is speaking out and providing direction?
Could not agree more
Cripps gets a free ride because he wants to will the side over the line...but he doesn't appear to be building the capacity of others to step up, or take on a more selfless, "less sexy" role for the greater good of the team
Cotchin realised it was more important to improve 17 other players than do it all himself
Cripps has publicly stated he’d rather improve 17 (or is it 21?) other players than get more of it for himself. fact is he’s continually adjusted to tags, increases in the speed of the game, changing rules that disadvantage players with his attributes. i think he’s one of those lead by example types but i’m not fully into his “let’s make the club a fun place to come to work”, well sometimes i agree with it from a HR perspective, but other times it makes me sick that they are on FO money, enjoy facilities like a five star hotel, plenty of down time, and still wanna have fun during the week when serving up one putrid performance after another.
i guess i’m a bid too old school for that, i hate it when austerity is imposed on the disadvantaged and middle classes, apart from the cruelty and injustice of it, it doesn’t improve the economy or distribution of resources within it, never has never will. but as elite sportsman they should be prepared to sacrifice everything, literally everything other than their good character and (wholesome) relationships to see the club improve to the point we are a real chance or better for the next CFC flag.
if that means some more sucking it up and going back to fundamentals and boring drills that kids have to do, and austerity with respect to the fun and games allowance, fine. if that means not having fun for three months straight then so be it. i’m not saying the coaches need to be cauliflowers to the playing group every time we lose, but some kind of evidence of accountability wouldn’t hurt us, IMHO. too many players are phoning it in on some kind of WFH gig atm.
