Our last 3 seasons have seen wild fluctuations.

2022 - smoking first half, no good second half. Won’t mention the ending.

2023 - putrid first half, blistering second half and two fantastic finals win. Prelim berth.

2024 - Top 4 for three quarters of the season before falling away badly. Scraped a finals berth to put up an embarrassing display.

So what is the real us?

Our best competes with the elite of the league. But our worst is horrible, absolutely horrible.

Sounds simple but we have to much more consistent and bring our best most weeks. Do that and we will contend. If not, then it will be a long season.

We just find out what the real us is.

i felt the same thing last night.

i feel like we peaked in the 1st Quarter in the Prelim against the Lions in 23, and we haven't been able to keep to that level since.

last night was, start again stuff. What choice do we have? Im a pretty positive person when it comes to football ... but its the same story for a few years now.

Not enough contribution from everyone. Our elite, is elite, but then we fall of a cliff and it looks like time is coming quickly for a few of our players as well ...

its not all doom and gloom ... i thought there where a few moments from the Campo lad that was great. Took a couple of big hits, got up and kept going. Same for Ollie ... we have some players to work with, but gee there is still some dead weight in this team. Alot of players looked underdone too ... which is suprorising considering we had a "reasonable fit" pre-season.

One game.

I remember similar feelings after losing to cellar dwellers Saints and Swans back in 1995.

Wake up call.

Its a long season.

This side peaked between qtr time against Gold Coast in 2023 to qtr time against GWS in 2024.

Won 2 of 10 games since. Against North and West Coast.

It’s done.

This list is cooked. We had our chance in 23/24 but weren't good enough.

We should get good FA compensation for TDK.
Forget playing finals however it would be nice to at least beat the Pies.

Haynes 33 yo
Docherty 32yo
Saad 31yo
Gov 31yo
Williams 31yo
Cripps 30yo
Hewett 29yo

The rest of the team are all younger than the abovementioned oldest players.
The abovementioned are not the reason we lost last night.

Our eldest statesman Docherty had 14 disposals in one quater or 27% game time
Our backline (abovementioned) and midfield were not the reason for our loss last night. They allowed 13 goals 4 against them. That's not a criminal offense.

The backline and midfield gave the forwards 65 inside 50's for a 9 return. 25 more F50 entries than Tigers. We lost by 13 pts. That's on the forwards.

I don't think the problem can be attributed to a 'cooked list'. That's a throw away line in frustration to justify the assertion this first round loss is what to expect for the rest of the year.

WTF did the forwards do to be blameless in the loss?

You can definitely blame the defence for some of it. Haynes gifted several goals with his uncharacteristic fumbling and bumbling. McGovern somehow conspired to shepherd a ball through for a goal. Between the two of them they must have conspired to gift at least 6 goals. Even Weiters had some terrible moments, like peeling off Lynch, missing the contest by 20 metres and leaving Lynch to score a freebie on the goal line; he also ran into Haynes when the latter looked like he might finally hold a mark, no wonder Haynes fell to pieces.

Garbage entries, garbage small forward pressure, garbage key forward efforts, garbage defending, garbage skills through midfield. Some okay clearance work. Grade: F-.

Gotta start with the Head of List Management & effectively the recruiting manager.

He has to be released from the contract. Nick Austin has to go. It is a cutthroat business. Nothing personal, but he has been there since 2020 and there have been few major successes in that time.
We have had enough time to see what Austin's List Management has brought...2020... 5 years in.

Cerra- an average to sometimes slightly above average midfielder
Jesse Motlop - 2021 draft....average forward
Fantasia....why did they recruit an old, bandaged up forward?
Zac Williams...look, I like his passion and will to want to play well, he is probably one player I like more than most in the team, but that recruiting decision hasn't exactly worked out well for Carlton either.

successes - Nick Newman....and 50/50 Hewitt.

https://www.carltonfc.com.au/news/55764 ... management

The Dodgers in baseball keep making right decisions with their recruiting....even with the higher payroll. Mookie Betts - worked out well, Freeman - worked out well etc... you reward list managers that give you the players that work. We can't keep rewarding a list manager that hasn't brought the missing pieces.

Not talking about age. Im talking about the list as whole. It is a poor list for the modern games. It had a slight chance a year ago but it has run its course. We missed that chance.
Still have the bones of a good list but I would like to start putting games into young players now with an eye to 27'/28' . This is not a response to last night. To me it has been obvious since last Sept or earlier. We are flogging a dead horse currently.

End of first round pick so around 22 or 23 after academy and FS selections.

And as others have said we don’t have a first round pick this year.

The thing is, it's NOT just one game!

The same pattern of deficiencies we saw last night, it's been so very apparent over many games now.

The guy can't coach!

It’s not though. It’s from Q time in the giants game last year.

That’s a decent body of work to assess…….

In early Feb I was feeling optimistic about our prospects this season.
Then came the Jagga injury, Elijah problem and now evidence that Motlop hasn't improved (I was hoping that he might improve after a pre-season) and it appears that Cerra might have already reached his ceiling. Moir still seems to go missing and Ollie Hollands still has the same deficiencies he had in his first year at the club. Kemp doesn't appear to be the answer as a 3rd tall up forward and Binns doesn't appear to have progressed as hoped. Charlie is still struggling with his knee issues, Harry with his contested work and kicking whilst Walsh is still moving like an old man.

Things have gone south very quickly.

Looking at our draw I have us with only 3 or 4 wins at bye round means we won’t be playing finals

Yep I had us 4-7 before last night, now 3-8 more likely.
