Personally, I believe that the outcry over apparent jumper 'clases' is exaggerated. I don't reckon that my sight is particularly better than anyone else's but I've rarely had a problem distinguishing one team from another. One team is always wearing white shorts or there is something obvious as part of the jumper to distinguish between playing uniforms. Admittedly I'd prefer it if we just stuck with our navy blue anyway and let other clubs decide whether or not they want to have alternative strips. However I've genuinely never found supposed jumper 'clashes' as the problem that it's made out to be.
I disagree, I think it's worse than it's ever been.
In fact the worst we ever had it was when we had the big red MAYNE across our back a couple of seasons back. It just added another colour into the mix.
I don't think that we as fans should settle for 'it's not that bad', or 'you can tell the teams apart if you look at the shorts'. It should be a
total non issue.
Why is it that nearly ever major sporting league in the world (
all football teams, basketball, hockey, rugby league) have alternative jumpers?
It's because it's common sense.
Anything that can make the game easier to watch on TV or at the ground is a must in my opinion. Get Carlton and Collingwood players into a 12 man all in pack for the ball. One team has black and white, the other navy blue with white shorts. Both have white numbers. Both have dark socks.
Why do that to the fans? OK, so it's down to collingwood putting the black back on their jumpers 10 years ago, but there is an illustration of a clash right there.
Carlton v Melbourne. Even Melbourne had the common sense to wear a red jumper when playing at our home. This is the oldest football club in the world, with the most stuffy, establishment supporters available.
By my reckoning, it would mean carlton wearing an 'away' jumper maybe 5-6 times a year. It will make the game easier to watch for everyone, and possibly even easier to umpire at times.
It doesn't stop us being the Navy Blues. We will always be the Navy Blues. Do Liverpool cease to be the Reds when they play away? Are West Ham no longer the Claret & Blue army when we play at Villa? Of course not.
It's a great idea, and I hope it gets forced through. For once, I agree with the AFL.
