I did a calculation in a trip planning app for the cost of a Melbourne to Brisbane round trip based on my car's 7.0L/100km efficiency and the $2.13/L I paid the other day for E10 petrol, and it came to $512.

I've done that drive 200 times since the late 70's, mainly for business in the 80's, and I like the north coast drive to SEQ or NNSW, popping into towns to see old friends, and get messy. But $512 one way? That's absurd as the cost of flights.

Yesterday petrol in Melbourne was $1.85 pl.
I arrived in Sydney last night and saw price of petrol was $2.15 pl.

Good luck with accomodation. I'm trying to find my son and his friend a place and the only things left are rooms for hire on Airbnb.

Hoping to hear from a mate in a big hotel for some better news.

This is crazy. I'm telling you, Brizzy can't handle the Blue Army. Gabba can't either with 39-42,000 capacity.

I think it maybe easier to fly in fly out and not worry about accommodation

$512 is the round trip cost. No idea why Melbourne would be 30c cheaper than Sydney but it could just be station-to-station variance; my local Metro is sometimes 30-40c cheaper than the Shell less than 1km away, bit of a joke really. Regional NSW petrol stations are usually a bit dearer than metropolitan so it could end up being worse than $512. Leave the Lambo in Bondi, mate ;)

Cheapest way, if it is possible with commitments, is to go Tuesday and come back later Sunday or Monday. Prices are normal then. A matter then of staying somewhere for 5 days. Still be cheaper, even with the accommodation, plus you see Brisbane.

The mental cost of spending 5 days in Brisbane outweighs the cost of flying in Saturday
