Injury update: Boyd and Cottrell
Jordan Boyd and Matthew Cottrell will spend time on the sidelines.

By Carlton Media - Just now

SCANS have confirmed Jordan Boyd has re-injured an acute fracture in his foot, while Matthew Cottrell is recovering from a navicular stress fracture.

The Club can confirm that Boyd will consult a specialist this evening and is likely to have surgery tomorrow.

Currently weight bearing in a moon boot, Cottrell will return to running once scans show adequate healing has occurred.

“It’s disappointing news for Matthew and Jordan, who have shown an appetite to compete since day one of pre-season,” Carlton Head of Football Brad Lloyd said.

“We know both players will leave no stone unturned in their recovery: Matthew has already been very diligent in his rehab, and we know Jordan will do the exact same post-surgery.

“We will give both players the required time to recover to ensure they’re in the best possible position to positively impact the team in season 2023.”

Presume we already have the longest injury list in the AFL?

FFS... I know injuries are part of football, but ours are never hamstring strain out for 2 weeks. It's always worst case scenario surgery only option time and time again. We're chicken little except the sky actually falls repeatedly

And these are only the injuries they tell us about, you can bet there’s more.

Sources: Lewis Young is wearing a moonboot as a precaution. It is not serious & he should be back in training next week

I can't believe the other 17 teams dont have injuries they keep quiet.

Injuries happen.

I bet most injuries, especially the stress fractures happen to motivated sportspeople who are driven to build the better version of themselves. The extras players take on are their choice and their doing.

I will wait to see what our injury list looks like at the end of February before I freak out.

I love the comebacks from Charlie and Doc, when fans had written them off.

The Walsh prediction by Doc Sherrin is very pessimistic. I'd put money on it that Walshy plays in the first half of the season.

I don't know why Russell is to blame. If he was, Cook would have replaced him by now.

Big year Bluebaggers.

Can someone here explain how he was given a 2 year contract

I don't have an issue with the contract, we need depth.

What I don't see how he gets a guernsey with a fit Saad, Doc and Williams in the side. Maybe slightly ahead of Newman..... not by much though. I think we'll cover him easily enough.

I think he deserves a spot on the list.

Once he got over the nerves in his first outing, (if that's all you still remember) he showed incredible dare and speed to link up and run the ball out of defence. He isnt afraid, and doesnt shirk the contest. He goes in harder than most in the 23, and he isn't taking up too much salary. Great value.

I thought he was the find of the year in 2022. A cheap punt who has all the potential to be in our GF team. Not many can kick a spearing 50 metre pass. His disposal can cut up opposition defences.

The great thing about Boyd is he can do the BP position proud and he releases either Docherty or Williams further upfield. Hey I wouldn't mind any of Boyd, Docherty or Williams delivering ball to our forwards.

Reports that Walsh is already running just over 3 weeks post back surgery. He was lightly jogging at training today.
Just hope he doesn't push himself too hard.
Good news though.

I would have been happy if Boyd was given a rookie list spot
He didn’t show enough in my eyes to be given a 2 year deal on the list
Ditto O’Brien
Then there are the kids we recruited
All bar Lemmey are runners
Cleary the club wants to address the lack of run and carry which is good but if you just focus on one aspect of a players makeup you can drop the ball

This happened around ten years ago when the club obsessed with obtaining key position players drafted Mitchell, McCarthy and co all spuds which set the club back

In his 7 games Boyd has shown he can run and carry the ball quickly
But in every stat he is average or below average except for % in contested possession
On top of this he has shown that his body isn’t physically reliable
Which is a concern when your age is 24.
So there my reasons as to why a 2 year deal on the list is way overs
But hey
Nothing new about giving guys long contracts who haven’t deserved it
