Geez it must have been some sort of corky for George Hewett. Missing a second week

There is a rumour doing the rounds that he has had bleeding in the calf and may not return until about round 10.

All corkies involve bleeding. It could be 1 week out or months depending on the severity. The fact he's been walking around, albeit with a limp, implies its not on the severe end from what I was just told, but you never know. Every injury and individual is different.

Injury happened on the 23rd April. That was 2 weeks ago. Maybe he misses travelling by plane to play GWS and he returns in round 10 for the home game vs Swans. Maybe, Maybe Maybe. Lets hope he's back after 3 weeks vs GWS.

Quote:
A corky is the result of a blunt trauma to the muscle that causes bleeding deep within the muscle. The medical term for this is a contusion. It is usually the result of a direct impact to the muscle from an object, or by contact with a person.

A corky can occur in any area, but it is most common for a contusion to be in the thigh region. This is due to the collisions that occur in sport between the muscle and ball, or muscle and another player. The blow to the muscle causes local muscle damage with associated bleeding.

Contusions can range from minor blows, resulting in minimal pain and no loss of activity, to severe contusions resulting in ‑ significant pain and loss of function. They may even lead to surgery if there is significant bleeding in the area!

Signs & symptoms of a corked muscle
The main diagnostic criteria for a muscle contusion revolve around how the injury occurred along with other signs such as local tenderness, swelling and increased pain on movement and stretch. Severe pain at the time of the injury may limit the ability to walk and continue to participate in activities, and often means the end of the game for the injured player.

The blow causes damage to local blood vessels and muscle tissue. Bruising may or may not be present depending on the depth of the contusion. A contusion without bruising can often be more painful and restrictive as the blood can get trapped within the tissue layers, so it doesn’t make it to the surface to see as a bruise.

Sometimes with severe contusions, the swelling may track down to the knee joint or lower leg or even press on nerves in the area causing pins and needles, numbness or compartment syndrome and severe pain.

Quote:
Physiotherapy treatment involves soft tissue therapy, controlled massage, dry needling, stretching, strengthening and education on what you should and shouldn’t be doing. This will allow the fastest and safest return to sport.

I just read the rumour again and it states the bleed has spread to his achilles.

SCANS have today confirmed a low-grade calf strain for Jack Martin.

Martin was subbed out in the closing stages of the second quarter in the Round 8 win over Adelaide at Marvel Stadium.

The Club has just received the results of Martin's scans, with the forward likely to miss 1-2 weeks with the injury.

A full injury update will be available in the coming days.

Yikes

Clearly Russell’s fault.

Sadly calf strains are part of getting older for any athlete.

Motlop, McKay and Mirkov should be getting nervous.

If Hewett is considered old at 25 then I might as well book that Swiss clinic

From today's Herald sun

Quote:
Fagan said Hipwood was available for selection after recovering from torn anterior cruciate ligament he suffered 10 months ago.

10 months ago he did his ACL and was ready for recall 2 weeks ago.

We are now 13 months since Marchbank and Cuningham did their ACL's.

That tells me me our boys should be ready after the bye in 4 weeks time.

Glad Marchbank played his first VFL game to remind some of the doubters what this guy is capable of, because most Carlton supporters who don't believe in Marchbank's talent and physical abilities base that on one risky 40m stab kick he took into the corridor but got cut off for an easy goal.

Come on boys, get fit and press hard for the 2nd half assault on the competition and season 2022.

You can't simply say an ACL is X months and that's it. Different bodies have different timelines. In English football, Virgil van Dijk returned after 10 months and has played just about every minute of every game for club and country over an extremely packed schedule. His club teammate Joe Gomez, who had the same ACL injury a couple of weeks later, has been nursed through the season and barely played. Same fitness staff etc, but nearly double the recovery time. I think you have to look at Charlie and Doc and say, well, maybe our fitness staff know what they're doing, but there's no guarantee Cuners' body will be ready this year, or ever. Or he'll be back in July better than ever. I dunno. Here's hoping.

I think as we’re going ok the need to rush guys back (to save the coach’s job) has diminished.

If they’re going to come back next year and have uninterrupted careers as a result then take whatever time is necessary

IF, Cuningham and Marchbank are anything like Joe Gomez, they should go and play another sport, or HTFU.

Thanks GE. I expect someone to pick me up on my unrealistic expectations. I do respect Andrew Russell and his team, and still feel we have the best HP Mgr in the land, or close to it.

I am expecting them both to come back and continue where they left off and stronger and more determined to make up for lost time....this year.

Point is, I am feeling like the reemergence in the senior team is getting closer each day, and am patient watching what the fill ins/ depth players do.

Gov was a revelation because Marchbank was out.
Young is a revelation with Jones and McDonald out.
Carroll is a revelation with Hewett out.
Durdin has been a revelation with Betts gone ... and I know he will get better and more dangerous with time.
We may have found another one in Boyd with the fortnightly injuries/illness of Stocker and Plowman.

OBrien and Newnes have surprised this year.

Good things happen to Carlton for good reasons, and things can only get better with the return of the boys out with 2021 ACL's
