Voss has been exceptional at the pressers.

We've gone from honourable losses to ugly wins, I know what I would rather.

Teams will always come out firing if they've been shown up. We need to be better at matching that intensity and failing that we need to be more composed and not fall to pieces so quick. Our lead evaporated so quickly in the third. We need to be better at managing the difficult times and then regaining control. A lot of this will come by training more to stop the transition. But equally we need to get tougher mentally and it might be a few players just aren't cut out for it when things get tough.

Yes I agree with most of this. BUT, we need to put the foot on the throat of teams when we have big leads. So far its like cruise control, especially against the bulldogs, hawks and today against port. Lets not forget, well, the game we should not have lost against the Suns. Next week a rampant Freo who are 2nd on the ladder. BIG litmus test for our team.

I noticed it against GC, and it was there again today, when we needed to play temp footy we just dont work hard enough. There is not enough players in motion creating space, running at the ball. Our ball carrier then has no option to bomb it long down the wing to a contest. Which creates turnovers and the ball rebounding fast into our under pressure backline.

Port did it well, So did the Hawks.

Frustrates me to no end.

Go Blues

I can't remember a win which seems more like a loss than this one. Trying to convince myself that I should be happy we got the 4 points. Oh well, let's get set for Freo on Saturday night.

I’m as frustrated as the next person but in the light of day, we are still coming from a long way back, and as a team we are learning and building, and there are multiple areas we will need to do better. It seems getting back control of the game is one we still struggle with and playing 4 quarters of pressure footy is another. I really like the way the boys are digging in deep to win games and that is a bonus. Now we just need to put the foot down when we have a team on the ropes and not take the foot of the pedal.
We have so much scope of improvement but we will not be able to get away with these type of fades for too much longer. More 4 quarter pressure efforts are needed, starting with Fremantle next week.

I feel like my sentiment will be against the grain here....

But the carlton of last year would've lost that by 4 goals.
Also to be 50 up early is a plus.
Port's season and possibly Ken's job were on the line today, they were always going to rally.
4 points is 4 points.

That same mob slapped us late last year by 96ish.

Well done boys.

Plenty to improve on. 4-1

Where's the like button?

Yes, I can't remember being so dissatisfied with a win in a long time, but we would have chucked it last year, as you say. We're pushing our luck, but we're making inroads. The coaching panel will need to do some overtime this week to hold onto the gains and smooth out the corrugated iron wrinkles.

The fact we won without Cripps is also a positive.

Port switched at every opportunity. We are very poor defensively between the arc's and the other teams know it. If you take away our first half clearances then the rest of our game is pretty ordinary.

This was prevalent in the Hawthorn game as well, and both times we failed to work it out. Too often they would switch then cut back through a gaping corridor. Rather than our players en masse chasing tail, maybe some could anchor themselves a little more firmly on the corridor side of the wave, so to speak. A little awareness wouldn't go astray occasionally.

This can be a starting point for a plan B, Vossie.

No, that's all you're getting. Aren't you lucky?

Our best seems to be coming from centre square ball ups. I think we've really benefited from the 6-6-6 rule, plus Pitto's work with the mids.

Still got plenty to work on around the ground in general play though

Hence the lunacy of playing just 1 ruck. Silvagni isn't working. We lost momentum when he went into ruck. Against GCS the same.

More I think about it, the more I reckon it is less about ‘working it out’ and more about effort which in our case is more mental… once we get ahead, we take our foot off the pedal and let the other team back in.
We don’t ran as hard to provide options when we have the ball or to chase and get into the right spots when they have the ball.
Next week will reveal a lot - first time we’ll go in as underdogs since Round 2. Hopefully this, plus the last three weeks has an effect on our mindset.

Im in between being pleased with 4 and 1 record so far but frustrated with how we have got there. Thinking more broadly, and maybe a little naively, are results like this game and the hawks game mental deficiencies borne out of our history over the past 5 or 10 years? Voss has on exposed form has brought about a better game plan. But lets not forget the many years of poor results and other things which have whether we like it or not, become ingrained into our playing group. This has been and will be a MASSIVE challenge for Voss and co to turn around. IT wont happen overnight. There have been glimpses, but to remove the mediocrity of years of false dawns from the mindset of our team is a MASSIVE change. It will take time, I think the guys are united, and want the success that they can and WILL deliver, but seriously, this is a team which shows so much potential, but its a work in progress. Lets enjoy (hopefully) a solid improved ride which brings about more consistency, but maybe more importantly, burying teams when we get a multiple goal lead against!

This post hits the nail on the head for me.
Voss has come in with a better game plan, we’ve recruited well and we’ve got some internal improvement from players (eg Charlie back, Cripps back to best etc).
However, we’re still struggling to kick bad habits developed over a long period.
We’re taking steps in the right direction but the penny hasn’t dropped yet.
It may well drop when we turn big early leads into floggings like a Melbourne or Brisbane of this year would do.
