Pathetic!

It is possible out very hard and quite brutal style of play is leaving us gassed. Might take quite a few games to physically adapt to play 4 qtrs, not dissimilar to Richmond in 2017. What has been encouraging in the 4 wins is when severely challenged on the scoreboard we have found something to win despite being really gassed.

Basically, I think we stopped running hard.
I’m guessing either because of fitness or because we still tend to get ahead of ourselves and think things will come easy once we get a good lead. Once that happens, the overlap handballs vanish and the leads ahead of the ball slow down. So the kicker just bombs it long.
And our pressure on them eases.
These three things change the whole game.

I said in the game day thread that we were mucking around with the ball too much. Way too much overuse when we were well on top. Why we would do that when we have two great key targets beats me.

Hopefully not a bit of Hollywood creeping in.

Very happy to be 4-1 but today was very bittersweet.

Maybe the real game was the friends we made along the way.

I always reckon it's better to play a team after an easy win.

So much negativity in here.

How many teams, honestly, have the game on their terms and play it their way for the whole 4 quarters each week?
Please

It's a myth.

I'm sure when the fixture came out last year that most of you in here were happy if we went 3-3 from our first 6. Here we are at 4-1 with a winnable chance to go 5-1 and it's more negative than ever.

Enjoy winning ugly people. It's been a while.

Go blues

If winning ugly was a person we’re the Wicked Witch of the West.

Our zoning is so bad.
For those who solely blamed Teague for the run ons and unanswered goals now you know it’s also the personal he had to work with
Players who don’t work hard enough and not protect space.

We were absolutely pansed by the bottom team without their recognized ruckman
If it wasn’t for Weitering who knows where to position himself we would be 2 and 3.
Simple as that . He saved us against the Hawks and the Power
We haven’t played anyone good yet
Early signs after 5 rounds is that
Dockers
Cats
Dees
Lions
Saints
Are the best performed sides
If our midfield starts to lose the stoppages we are rooted because our pressure around the ground
is not top 4 standard
Our midfield is very one paced
When we play well we can be brilliant but it’s so hard to play like that for 4 quarters.
As long as we play Newnes and Setterfield we will be average
Dow and Stocker need an extended run on the wings
Martin escapes the chop but went missing when the heat was on

Not much has changed
As for our supporters cheering the team off yeah I get it
We are 4 and 1.
When’s the last time that happened.
But clearly they have no idea if they think we are much better in 2022.

Hopefully we get to see
Carroll
Honey
Stocker
Motlop
In the seniors at some point.
Dow definitely deserves a run next week particularly with his contract up in 17 weeks.
Give him a decent crack at it.

That’s all great but how did Freos best midfielder go today ?

Brayshaw has become their best mid
Serong was very good today
Mundy average
The Dockers will be our toughest test this year unless they have an off day.

This needs fixing too.

How we are ending up with wins is a surprise to all watching .... as long as we are learning.

We kicked 6 goals in 2 quarters today. That is progress.

Sayers is cut from the same cloth but the board is better off having Kinnersly as a Vice President
Given her job outside the club she clearly didn’t share Luke’s view about Ross Lyon

Pros:

Another win.
First half.
I thought Martin was BOG in the 1st half.
Owies had a terrific 1st half as well.
Walsh's best game for the year.
Harry, Charlie, Hewett and Cerra.
Cottrell was pretty good. Newnes also

Cons:

Wasted opportunity to build some percentage.
Horrible, relatively unpressured defensive turnovers gave Power an armchair ride back into the game. Defence in general was very poor once again.
Some pretty bad unpressured midfield turnovers as well. I like how we're sharing it around these days, but kept on overdoing it today. We'd be in a great position to take the ball forward, then we'd handball to someone under pressure or on his wrong foot.
Lot of unnecessary smothers from players not taking enough care with their kicks.
I know it was his first game back. But Parks was horrible today.
Port forwards flopping and diving for frees.

We need more mids to run through and help Cripps Hewett Cerra and Walsh.

Kennedy has gone missing last 2 weeks, Fisher doesn't. Martin doesn't. Owies doesn't and Durdin doesn't.

So, whose there to help us win the midfield battle for 4 quarters?

Its not negativity.

Its nervous energy and daring to believe.
Shell shocked.

The way I see it here at TC is we look at our weaknesses to get a realistic picture of our chances, our needs and our potential.
4-1 tells us the tables have turned somewhat. Happy Days.

Now back to discussing those wings we need sorted ... and forwards who can play midfield, other than Jack.

Spot on

Players must lose "connection" as a defensive unit. For me, fatigue must be the culprit.
When we are overlapping and cutting up midfields and defense structures we look really good.
We don't run hard enough, for a turnover game, nor do we run long enough, imo.

6 goals in 2 quarters was great.

Random thoughts from our fade outs

We lose our shape, don’t use the angles, don’t run to space to create a hit up option, and panic and kick long down the line because we are scared to take risks
Our kick out strategies need serious drilling. Hesitant unsure usually take one bounce prop and kick to the pocket or long down the line to a contest. Almost never offers us a real advantage
We got squeezed out of the attacking kick inboard to the corridor again today. Port did this much much better than us, and the forward entries then open up.
We are great when we get the centre clearances but not nearly so good attacking from defensive turnovers. A stat put up on the scoreboard early in the 4th I think said goals from defensive turnovers Carlton 0 Port 6.

Hey 4 and 1 who would have guessed. Nearly had a heart attack in 3 of them. Just a matter of time
Go blues

Port have terrorized us over recent years & we just ended their season, in what would have been gutting fashion. And Robbie Gray missed a couple of gettable ones

Agree with Stefchook, felt like an inordinate numbers of our kicks got smothered which was infuriating

Young took a spectacular mark in the last qtr then played on & buggered up, made me scream. But he did some good desperate acts at the death too, so that was good. Still think we are far better with Mcgovern in that side though. Super important to us.

I'll cut the side a bit of slack in that they had a 10 day break & it was hot, & our game last week was in the Qld heat. But still we have to bury teams at some point, otherwise teams will always feel they can get us. It's amazing that in the last 20 years I seriously can barely remember a comfortable day at the footy where we got out to a decent lead & held it for an easy win.

Tiges Pies Bombers all lost
