Dow is not competing for the wing so I expect him to miss out. I would also suggest that unless they are making a change to the role of LOB's wing he will stay. If Newnes replaces LOB it would suggest they are wanting Newnes more defensive, competitive approach.

Sides often pinch wins but the best sides win the games they're expected to.

This is a huge chance for us to win a game that everyone expects us to. These are the games that in recent times we just don't win.

Agree BH.
Quietly confident though. We should win enough contested and centre clearances to give our forwards a good look against an inferior backline. There forward line should not concern us either, unless Casboult decides to take Young to school, but I like what Young showed last week and don’t fear that happening.
Blues by 30+.

I’d be more nervous (I’m currently about an 8) if we’d smashed Hawks last week. The fact that we almost got overrun (again) makes me think there will be no complacency.

Agree with these ins and outs, but I’m nit sure who we’ll bring in if Pittonet doesn’t pass his test. I would think it would need to be a small fwd or HFF role player.

Plowman is OK, but is not doing the 3rd tall/ interceptor role any justice.
He's not an intercept mark.
He doesn't make the play. Doesn't break lines.

Plowman is a stopper. Period. A mundane, uncreative role.
Has problems with mdium and tall opponents.

We can do better than him when McGovern, Marchbank are back and if Kemp is developed for the role.
I believe if McDonald was selected to take on No2 KP as he did in round 1 & 2, Young would take Plowman's role as an intercept mark/ 3rd tall.

Plowman's days are numbered, but he's the best we've got available with 3 of the best candidates for the 3rd tall all out injured.
We should be grateful we still have him imo.

Newnes vs LOB?

Both have engines to last 4 quarters.
LOB the quickest of the 2.
Newnes is the better tackler.
Newnes also has the hurt factor when he tackles.
Newnes plays wityh more confidence.
LOB has more upside.

Its a game of attrition, and hard hits.
I had written off Newnes last year because of his lack of interest imo.
Right this minute?
Newnes for me, given the form he's shown in the twos.

I hope Dow gets a game. A drover’s dog could be doing the job that O’Brien has been given. The property steward wouldn’t have washed Lochie’s jumper yet.

Once they re-picked their side (cheating flowers), Hawthorn put up a legitimate challenge in the stoppages and transition & where was LOB? 30 metres off the contest, per usual.

He may not be competing for a spot on the wings, but we’ll look a hell of a lot better in that position if Dow does come into the side.

I was just thinking about Dow, and thought it would be good to see him in the guts connecting with the big boys Cripps, Hewett or Kennedy to see what he's got, in the hope he's using his wheels and charging out of congestion with the ball. What he does next...this is what we need to know. Will he bomb it? Kennedy does bomb it deep with his penetrating kick. Will he continue the chain of handballs to run the ball forward? He's capable as he loves a handball.

LOB could easily be sub, but I doubt it.

On the point re LOB 30 metres away from the stoppages. Maybe that's what he's instructed to do. Surely he doesn't run his own race in the seniors. If not....had to laugh about the jumper being all nice and clean. Its time he got tougher and dirtier.

If the Hawthorn game wasn’t a sign that the side needs to evolve beyond that set up, then Vossy is in real strife.

The recipe is there for opposition coaches… size at the coal face, hard tag on Walsh, set an extra intercept at half back & the full back no deeper than 30m.

Found this page on GPS Tracking from 2018.

George Hewett would have been only 22yo and he was already clocking up to 15 kms in a game.

The player is a work horse, and obviously doesn't need to feature on too many rotations. A weapon in an era where interchange rotations is being reduced.

I doubt he'd be starting on the bench.

Question for the trivia buffs: when was the last time we won 4 in a row? Can’t recall it happening under Ratten.

I know the last time we went 4-0 to start the year was ‘95…

I know you're a real fan of Dow's. I thought he'd be in the best 22 before the praccy games, having heard Diesel's praise of Dow's and LOB's preseason.

I can't see Dow or LOB putting their body on the line. Dow has weapons, but he's too much of a ball watcher. For an inside mid, he doesn't break tackles or hit hard because he isn't the type who enjoys the physical side of the game IMO.

I am a fan of Dow because he has shown regular improvement at his time at the cub where as LOB?

As far as putting his body on the line, he has made his name as an inside mid and a tackler. Speaks for itself.

I do believe both wings are are a weakness of ours, no run and carry. Compare to Melbourne, it needs to be rectified.

We don't know if Dow can play wing until he is given a go in the seniors.


I think that Dow's best position is Left Right Out !
