Also, kidding yourself if you think Newman won't be in the 22.

Pretty simple changes this week if you ask me.
In: Saad, Martin
Out: Boyd, Durdin

I had the same thought when I read Ianh post.
Ian has his reasons and theory about Voss rotating players to create a squad.

I'm not a Newman fan, but Newman did well last game and at this stage is ahead of Stocker imo.

I don't think Boyd did enough to hold his spot either.

Voss said, before round 1 game, that players are earmarked and train for a position and MC select best available, hence Dow was behind the fab 4 in round 1 and 2, and now its the Fab 5, and Dow is still not in that group. I guess we have to wait for teams to be announced. The theory about rotations will be tested in the next month.

Fogarty's best work in the reserves is as an inside mid who provided blocks for Dow, but known to play as a defensive HF. I'm sure Martin is ahead of Fogarty in the pecking/ class order.

I am looking forward to see what Voss does if McDonald is fit this weekend. Plowman or Young?

Unless Pittonet doesn't come up, they're the logical changes.
Weitering seems to be having ankle issues the past few weeks as well. Hopefully he's also right to go.

I noticed Weitering paying attention to his groin area ... with his fingers, not his fist

Just thinking about rotation theory of Ianh, given we play a brand of footy that requires "Heat at the source", there's going to be a lot of sore bodies after games: opposition will know they've played the new Carlton Crew, and Carlton players will also be nursing soreness too.

We have pointed out:

Pitto's back
Weitering groin/ ankle

Jack goes in hard, Cripps doesn't stop taking on 2-3 opponents, Walsh takes hits, Hewett loves the tough stuff....

Its the big boys who seem to give and take the big hits, not the wingmen so much.

Here is my view. First, don't risk Pittonet and MacDonald given back problems and an interstate plane trip. Setterfield, O'Brien and Fisher have been the least impressive of the small men over the journey, notwithstanding O'Brien has shown marked improvement, Setterfield has had his moments and Fisher is a bit of a favourite of mine. Newman a bit lucky not to risk the cut as well but don't want 5 changes to the team. Play Williams up on a wing and see how he goes. No problem with going smaller given the time and location of game and the weather forecast. I don't mind making a few changes given the team has not been running out games and the 2s have been better at that. Also, Vossy was at pains in the after match presser to talk about the need to have a squad mentality. So, out Pittonet (managed - play him in the 2s if fit enough, otherwise give him a week to get his back better - same with MacDonald) Fisher O'Brien and Setterfield. Boyd hasn't been as good as his abilities justify, I think he is a bit overawed at the moment but more game time in the 1s will either allow him to adjust to the tempo and show his speed, precision delivery, versatility and ability to play lockdown small defender better than anyone else on our list. I see him potentially as a Dennis Armfield with precision kicking and I was a huge Armfield fan. If he doesn't get up to speed after a decent run in the 1s back to the 2s and dominate in order to get anther chance when a spot opens up again.

So, IN Dow (solid good form in the 2s), Fogarty (solid form 1s and 2s), Saad (return from covid) and Motlop (too good for 2s, get in whilst his confidence is high. Also although a forward can press up higher thn Owies or Durdin neither of whom have his length of kick. OUT Pitonet (managed) Fisher O'Brien Setterfield (omitted)

Something like:

Boyd Young Plowman
Saad Weitering Docherty
Williams Cripps Walsh
Durdin C Curnow Motlop
McKay Silvagni Owies
De Konning Cerra Hewett (tagging Miller)
Dow Fogarty Kennedy Martin Emerg Newman Travelling 2nd emergency Kemp - can play pretty much any role so ideal for coverage.

We SHOULD smash these guys if our mindset is right.

With Durdin out and Motlop not available it saves O'Brien and Setterfield.

Now suggest:

Boyd Young Plowman

Saad Weitering Docherty

Williams Cripps Walsh

Fogarty C Curnow Martin

McKay Silvagni Owies

De Konning Cerra Hewett (tagging Miller)

Dow Kennedy O'Brien Setterfield Emerg Newman Travelling 2nd emergency Kemp - can play pretty much any role so ideal for coverage.

What struck me about the Voss after-match was his comment about needing a squad, seems to suggest rotating changes a bit more than traditional. Now of course that impacts the extent to which players get to work together (especially in their separate sections of the ground) to jell as a unit, but in part the response to that is you need to have the extra soldiers who may have to come in when a soldier is lost to have some experience with the rest of the group and the other point is that training is the opportunity albeit not under match pressure to jell in that way.

Don't know how two small forwards being unavailable saves 2 wingmen?
Also, kidding yourself if you think Newman won't be in the 22.

Need one defender on the bench for rotations. Probably a fwd or ruck too depending on structure. So usually only two midfielders.

Mirkov with a big write up on the club website. Maybe getting a debut if Pitto is out?

Nothing from the club till Teams are announced but Sam Edmund has pounced on SEN

Quote:
Carlton small forward Corey Durdin will be unavailable for selection, entering the league’s COVID protocols.

The 19-year-old played the first three games of the year for the Blues and has performed well enough to lock down his spot in the side.

SEN Chief Reporter Sam Edmund says the young Blue will miss Round 4’s clash with Gold Coast.

Teammates Jack Carroll, Jesse Motlop and Tom Williamson have also been floated as potentially in COVID protocols, though this has not yet been confirmed by the club.

Carlton has been hit relatively hard by COVID so far this season, with senior coach Michael Voss, Head of Football Brad Lloyd and players Adam Saad, Adam Cerra and Jack Martin previously entering protocols.

It hasn’t affected them on-field just yet, with the Blues sitting at 3-0 with the Suns, Power (MCG), Dockers (Perth) and North Melbourne to come.

Provided there’s no COVID or injury curveballs, surely it’s Hewett, LOB, Martin & Saad.

ie.-
In: Martin & Saad
Out: Durden & Boyd

Fogarty would be my choice for Sub.

George Hewett and Adam Saad on the bench ... I bet George starts on the Touk, and Saad is on for Newman. Saad's and Hewett's selection on the bench would make Dow, Newnes and Fog feel good, and also LOB would feel like he's not being pushed out of the team.

I doubt Martin would be dropped against his old team.

Sooooooo glad Pitto is fit to play.

Newnes as the sub to give Dow opportunity to continue his good form...or Dow to reward for effort???

Just glad to have Pitto playing and Saad back TBH.

If we can assume there are no late outs, I suggest the interchange will be:

Hewett and Saad no question
Martin if the coaches rate him - we will find out
A toss up for the 4th. I go with Newnes as the most versatile of the group. And he can play wing.
Dow as the sub.

Newnes? Plowman still in? Argghhhhhhhh. Scary old Carlton that we keep on going back to these guys.

Would like to see Parks, and Dow. Hell Stocker would do more than Plowman.

Sorry to be negative, but those two remind me of our shit days.

Agree totally but trying to think like the MC.

And Plowman is not really that bad. Just a little bad.

Hewett is obviously in.
Saad is obviously in for Boyd.

The other positions are:

Martin vs Fogarty. Surely it has to be Martin.

O’Brien vs Dow vs Newnes. I’d go with Dow but suspect they’ll stick with O’Brien.

Newnes for sub. The kids need to play full games to keep developing

A fair amount of talent in the Gold Coast side. They were poor against GWS last week however I'm expecting a much stronger effort against us at home. We will need to be on our game.
