Fwd/Mid: Silvagni, Martin, Fogarty

For mine, Walsh, Stocker & maybe Docherty are the only ones missing from our best outfit. There could be a case to be made for Fisher, Honey, Newnes, McGovern or even Motlop to come in, but I just really want to see Carroll in action. The photos suggest that young fella has put some work in over the summer.

Carroll has a lot of fans the preseason.
He looks to be the surprise packet.

Players don't get selected on how they look in photos. Fisher will be selected before Carroll without doubt and rightly so.

At a guess I reckon Motlop will play.

Few spots up for grabs of course, I guess we don’t fully know who Voss prefers at this point in a few areas. In saying that, I don’t expect radical personnel changes to last year, but would expect we will be better defensively, or at least attempt to be.

B: Plowman weiters Boyd
HB: Doc Young Saad
C: Williams Cripps Hewett
HF: Martin Charlie Fisher
F: Motlop McKay JSOS
R: Pittonet Cerra Kennedy
Int: Dow TDK Ed kemp
Sub: Omac

Boyd my dark horse, can’t see marchbank going straight in, and spots up for grabs from list above are Motlop, Boyd, Doc (fitness permitting), Dow (if someone else performs super well to replace him) and Kemp (ditto Dow).

Still think Pitto is our best bet as first ruck.

I love the starting midfield group vs Tuggers

Its a good team highlighting all the players to show something at some stage this preseason.
I'm not sure Fog has really been highlighted by track watchers or any of the coaches reviews, though. Me thinks he's a long way back and he's on our list to provide forward pressure which Owies Durdin and Honey can do with aplomb, and Fish looked pretty good in last hot out, so there's plenty of pressure on Fog to pass them imo.

Cottrell looked good in the first hit out, a month ago, but feel OBrien has shown the pace needed for wing, but hey, Cottrell may be the 23rd specialist :sly:

Walsh wont be playing in the first 3-4 rounds (or more)

TDK at CHF in place of Jack Silvagni in the forward line as the 3rd tall.

Charlie kicked 7 against the Dogs playing FF, but feel he's primiong himself for CHF given he's been kicking snags from more than 60m out.

Former Carlton captain Sam Docherty could play as soon as Round 1.

After undergoing treatment for testicular cancer in August, the defender has been training with the club and slowly returning to full fitness.

He is not expected to play in this week’s practice match against St Kilda, but could feature the following week against the Demons.

Michael Voss confirmed to AFL Media that they are becoming more and more bullish that he could play early in the season.

Docherty has only played 30 games for the Blues since 2017, tearing his ACL twice to go with an ankle injury in 2021 and this battle with testicular cancer.

The 28-year-old stood down from the captaincy role to focus on his health over the summer.

Fellow defender Liam Stocker is also a shot to play in Round 1 as he recovers from a syndesmosis injury.

Quote:
One new name who will play in a defensive role this season is Mitch McGovern, having approached Voss about the prospect of reinventing himself as an intercept player like his brother Jeremy.

Quote:
McGovern has several similar attributes to his brother Jeremy, who is a premiership-winning defender and a four-time All-Australian at West Coast, and has enjoyed a standout summer on the track at Ikon Park.

Quote:
"If I was confident about it at the start, I'm even more confident about it now. But we have some training to go off the back of that. When he first went in, he still had some physical hurdles to overcome. But we all see the attributes that he's got," Voss said.

"What's been really striking about 'Gov' is that he's had a real urgency in the way he's gone about his pre-season. He's been extremely motivated and he's done everything that's required to give himself the best chance to go out and play good football. That guarantees nothing, but it certainly gives you a hell of a good chance."

Quote:
McGovern's defensive move will give Carlton a timely boost following the retirement of Liam Jones late last year, but had already been in the works prior to the veteran's unexpected announcement.

"The Liam Jones decision had nothing to do with it," Voss said.

"It was in discussions with him and, giving it some more thought, it made sense. But he was well and truly along that path before I'd even had a chance to talk to him. As I chatted to him and it became clearer, he had a passion about it. That's what he wanted to do and we were happy to facilitate that."

Docherty Stocker McGovern in the mix for Round 1.

All earmarked for the backline along with Williams:

Quote:
It's unlikely that Docherty will be the only familiar face down back for Carlton this season, with former free agent recruit Zac Williams another expected to be lining up in a defensive role under Voss.

Quote:
Williams has continued to train as a defender under Voss, with the club's new coach open to the idea of using the 27-year-old in a variety of different positions but with a focus on providing rebound out of defence.

"I certainly don't want to take anything off the table, but if we had to pick a more predominant position it would be across half-back," Voss said.

"The beauty with Zac – and even with Mitch McGovern for that matter – is that they do have the capacity to play in different positions. If it's required, either on a weekly basis or throughout games, we have a few strategic levers that we can go with if we need to as a coaching group."

Then there's the usual candidates in Saad, Newman and Plowman to consider for the backline positions. And what about possible smokey in Boyd? Swingman Kemp??

The above are for 4 spots in the backline and not the 2 KPD spots to fill, one obviously by Weitering, the other is for Young and Oscar to fight out.

Pressure.

I wonder if Kemp will be selected for round 1?

He's in mine, as is Jack Silvagni, but there's so many players pressing for spots they can't all be picked.

Jack for the 3rd tall forward and ruck? Can Kemp ruck? Where does that leave TDK?

VOS wants a versatile team. Anything can happen on the selection table. Voss has stated he has levers at his disposal with all the versatlity.

Need to start making decisions starting this Thursday's praccy game vs Saints. Docherty likely to miss that one.

Thanks Jez

Article dated Feb 4.
He looked like he needed shoulder surgery post season.
Must have had surgery soon after round 23 when he was rucking with Pitto out.
Surely he would have started running before the blood clot issue in January.

Feb 4 leaves him 6 weeks to regain fitness AND form.

Stocker has been ruled out of the practice matches, so don’t expect him for round one either.

Harry has a foot injury, but he hasn’t been ruled out yet.

I was hoping Cunners might be back earlier but the club is saying second half of the season.

A decent ol’ injury list considering we haven’t played a competitive practice match yet

Our injury list looks like it does every year. Yet another year coming up where we never get our best 22 on the park together. Ugh... this club
