Took over our Club when it was the best brand Australia wide in the VFL .... and had to be thrown out kicking and screaming.
He just ended up a rather sad figure ...
That's true...same as Rice. They both wanted the fame when all the smart hard work had been done.
George Harris would have made us bigger than Manchester United back in 1980.
No doubting that Elliot loved Carlton....maybe too much.
I think if you really want to take things a fair way back, the seeds of trouble were sewn very early, I think the decline of the club actually began after the 87 flag.
May not seem like a huge thing, but watching finals recently from 88 v Pies and Dees, there was noticeably more opposition fans which hadn't been the case before. I think complacency had set in for the club, and then we lost our first 5 games in 89, and didn't really get going again until 92.
95 was a great achievement, but still built largely from the old methods, bringing in Diesel and having a core of guys still around from the U19s days, SA recruits, and other veterans who pre-dated the draft era (all of SOS, Sexton, Ang, Kouta, Harry, Sticks, Braddles, Brown, Ratts, Dean, Hanna). We got some astute pickups to compliment them, but it solidified in big Jack's mind we could just keep doing it the way we had done it previously.
