Between 2000 and 2004 RL spent time as the Carlton VFL Coach. Mrs Caz and I were well and truly up to our neck in the Blues back then and rarely missed an AFL or VFL game. We were real diehards in them there days.
At every VFL game we sat directly infront of the VFL Coaches box with a single pane of glass separating us from the wisdom of RL. Around 2002 Waity was a gangly yearling who could do the brilliant and the unthinkable, all within 3 steps.
Hearing RL give him a spray over the ph was some of the funniest stuff I have ever heard.
It seemed that about every 5th ph call to the bench was..........'Get Waity on the phone." When a forlorn Waity trudged off and finally picked up the phone I would put my bino's on him across the ground. Watching his reaction to RL's words behind me was absolute Gold. To Waity's credit he sucked it up and got on with it each and every time.
If I had a $1 for every time RL grabbed up the phone to the Runner and would start with.......TELL WAITY!!!!!!!
We all thought Pagan would give the club a foot up the backside but alas we were stone motherless broke and broken as a Club.
Ratts was going to be the Savior but he did not have the background experience he now has. Ratts had no 'Off' button and I think he often put people on edge with his 'passion and one track mind.' He could never relax into it.
Malthouse................was Malthouse..................I could understand players not wanting to play for him. Not much gray with Mick. You either Love him or Hate him. He just wasn't Carlton enough when things went wrong. Zero support in the background when the deals are done.
Bolts got smashed by over expectation from those in the back room. They just didn't have the patience to wait. I think deep, deep down when it really counted, the players found it hard to relate to him as he had not played at the level. Just my take and those of a few others I know.
Ross Lyon might just be the Battle Hardened Warrior we need. Nothing he hasn't seen 100 times and he can read the writing on the wall at light speed. SOS is his bestie so he will know the politics (admittedly from a bias perspective). He just needs to surround himself with like minded souls. I know nothing about Dean Soloman but from what I read he might be a good fit under Ross somewhere.
If RL got the gig I wouldn't mind seeing if Brendan Goddard has any interest in being involved somewhere. His dislike for losing is legendary and his ability to call out slackers is on the same scale.
Clarkson might be a better choice but RL will be fun, fun, fun. Interesting times ahead for the pea hearts if he gets the gig.

I love your insights, Cazz, and the clear, intelligent way you share them. Thank you.
I’m not sold on Lyon, but would prefer him over the other supposed candidates.
I can’t take too much more despair.
