Cripps has “pinch-hit” in the ruck pretty much every game this year, but Silvagni did the bulk of second ruck work.
Murphy is injured.
Correct.
As for the game plan, I have no problem with it whatsoever. We have been evolving the team defence over the past month and Saturday was just another layer of it.
Our defenders were less isolated, our mids and forwards pushed up the ground to assist/provide a link coming out of defence and our players were better connected. Syd likes the idea of Harry winning the Coleman and our forwards playing good old 80's football but we'll never progress if we continue with it. It's taken Teague and co 2+ years to understand a game plan needs a foundation of defensive structural integrity.
We are great at creating space and stretching zones and banging it in to Harry but we get smashed when we turn it over or give the ball back via free kicks or scoring points.
Teague likes attractive football. Well, attractive football doesn't win premierships without a defensive foundation.
Personally I can handle losing games of footy if the other team are better or more skilful. And that's what happened on the weekend. The strategies employed gave us every opportunity to succeed. It was our goal kicking that beat us. What were we? 1.14 at near 3/4 time or somewhere around there. And yet we were within 3 goals.
You need a game style that promotes and rewards effort. McKay had more defensive intent on Saturday than he has all season. He tackled and harassed which allowed us to keep the ball in a contested situation.
That's what will make us a good team.
Put Charlie, McGovern, Jones, Cuningham, Doc, Fisher and a couple of our up and comers into that team with that structure and we'll win many more games than we lose. We'll significantly increase our inside 50 count from Saturday with options for the bail out kick. It will also make us harder to defend because we can use run and carry out of defence by getting numbers back or we can go long to Charlie and Harry. We've been 1 dimensional for too long under Teague. Continue this footy and we'll start to get real value from Saad, Williams and Docherty.
Credit to the coaches. Obviously someone has made our strategies more comprehensive and more relevant to current day tactics. Whether it be Teague or his hand was forced by assistants or the review, it doesn't really matter. As long as it's sustained and built upon, our team will be far better served.
