I remember back in 1987.
Great year. Carlton Premiers.15th Premiership.

Dr Edelstein owned the Sydney Swans and Swanettes.
Sydney were the next big thing. Heady days.

Tom Hafey was coach.
His charter was to produce an attractive brand of footy to bring in the crowds to the SCG.
High Marking. High scoring. Daring. Different.
"Here's the chequebook" say the Doc.

Hafey did it. Had 7 losses along the way
But they played the most dazzling, amazing football anyone has ever seen week in week out for a while there.
Huge scores, week in week out by 198, 195, 185, peaking with the following run:

Def WCE kicking 201 points, next week
Def Effendrug* kicking 236 points

Ladder

1. Carlton 18W
2. Hawk 17W
3. Sydney 15 W
4. Nth 13W
5. Melb 12 W

Sydney got smacked in the finals by Hawks and Melb.

They were not a great defending team. Carlton smashed them physically to slow them down.
Capper wasn't flapping. Healey wasnt running and Rhys Jones put Williams off his game.
Our Mosquito fleet was the equal to Healey Mitchell Williams Wright Neagle Bolton

Moral of the story is you have to have more strings to your bow to win an AFL Flag.

You need an Offensive game, Defensive Game, Contested ball Game to have an even chance on the day.

Hopefully Carlton are building towards an era of success: a Dynasty. They key players are still young.

Need a great coach.

Teague needs to show he can bring 2 other parts of the game.
Its a mindset, injuries can't mask. One soldier in, one soldier out.

Our Mosquito Fleet was one of the most underrated brigade of footballers of all time.

I don't think they were underrated.

After all, the media coined the term "Mosquito Fleet" after the Carlton on ball brigade, not the Swans, with their Brownlow Medalists, BnF's and many moving pink bits.

The media also coined the term "the Premiership Quarter" after Carlton's habit to dig deep in the 3rd quarter, after sucking on a few ciggies at half time, to come out with an avalanche of goals to put the game well beyond reach for our opponents.

Bit of a hobby horse of mine - but I believe our 79-82 era side is very underrated against the Essendon*** and Hawthorn sides of the 80’s.

We would have won the four premierships in a row if Percy Jones had not been coach in 1980. Anyone who knew anything about footy back then is aware Jones was only appointed as a popular selection for the Rice presidential ticket against the Harris / Jezza attempted takeover of the club.

1979 coach Jezza
1980 coach Percy
1981 coach Parkin
1982 coach Parkin

Speaks for itself.
Bit rough on Percy there .
Reluctant coach up heval in the club . Club legend leaves
Then to finish 2nd on the ladder by % with 17 wins 5 losses then making the semi final.

You are a hard task marker.

If the club went through off season turmoil like that now we would collecting a spoon

Not talking about now, talking about then. I am putting it in context.

Percy was never a coach. He was the club clown before proper professionalism and a very popular figure at the club which guaranteed votes for the establishment.

The team did so well that year is exemplified by what they did the year before and the two years after.

I’d happily explore Buckley if Clarko isn’t available

Apparent the effort is there and the coach does not miss simple shots at goal. However, Martin, Williams, Setterfield are way off the pace. LOB, Honey and Ramsay could not be any worse. Odd selections.

Regardless what you think of Teague, anyone using the loss v Geelong against him is nuts.

I’m still almost certain he will be coaching us next year, and will have a bolstered coaching panel around him.

I thought we did well yesterday, have people forgotten fullback and second ruck chf were both absent and we had no, I repeat, no tall replacements?

This review into the entire football department simply needs to find answers and then solutions to one key question: why are we give or take the 13th best side in the competition at the end of year 6 of this rebuild?

At this point the evidence is there that we’re about the 13th best side in it. We generally beat the teams below us (hawthorn, GC, Adelaide etc), have a mixed bag against the teams around or just above us and cannot beat the top 6 or 8 sides.

Coaches, players, recruiting, drafting, development, leadership, high performance department, head of football etc have to all be heavily scrutinised.

Find some solutions and we may rise. Don’t find any solutions and the pain will continue.

Problem is we have been using these excuses for almost 20 years

Our drafting between 2009 and 2014 has been an epic failure.

We only have Cripps playing from six drafts.

We have just assembled a deep list that still needs work with a new coach

We also need our best players on the ground building cohesion like all top four sides.

The good news is that our 2015 to 2020 cohort are now beginning to come into their prime.

okay then so nothing matters, any blokes will do, why bother drafting at all, lets just play the VFL side

or

if I get shot in the head and can't think straight, I'm not making excuses, its just a fact. Whether I have shot myself in the head (drafting etc) or someone else did it is not the issue (for this discussion).

finally something we can agree on. Those are the desert years. Carlton as a club [REDACTED] those years up badly. No one else did it to us, we did it. It is why people worry about the current crop - imagine if we did it again...

Let’s hope we go from desert to dessert years.

Just looking at this statement again, Tuohy, Robinson, Betts and Kennedy say that it wasn’t such a failure.

Whatever the rate rebuild ended in 2019 not 2015. So we are effectively in our second year out of rebuild mode not 5-6 years.

We have barely seen our 2019 draftees play a game.

Yeah but Jones and Levi are liabilities... that's what this forum keeps telling me...
