We won.
Cripps switched on
Dow & SPS were really good
Stocker's best game. He is a tough MF
Jones best gave vs a kid.
Weitering AA form.
Silvagni in the ruck. Cripps in the ruck.
DeKoning wasn't disgraced.

CONS

kicking for goal.
umpires
fitness
Harry playing for frees.

However, it is a huge worry that our better players played well and there was a lot more intent and team play (incl actually coming in to support players who were being hit). And yet, we still only beat last year’s wooden spooners by less than 2 goals (esp after busting out to a 34 Pt lead before half time).
Obviously game plan, confidence big issues.

Same crows side who’ve beaten Geelong, Melbourne and overturned a similar deficit to beat Saints the other week.

Not saying we are great, far from it, but it was a better win that saying it was v last years wooden spooners, they are a better side this year.

Long way to go , we only won one qtr and we very lucky in the first

The few positives

Dow, stocker , Walsh ( I don’t have any words to describe him) , Saad , Kennedy and Cripps bringing players into the game with his hands , sps away from the backline and allowed to be play on instinct , Murphy going off early and letting Newman have a impact across hb and let’s imagine what McKay will do when he has genuine support around him

New coach and new football dept definitely have something to work with this preseason

That is the first time I have seen Carlton win at Marvel

Its also the first time I have seen them play there

Happy for the 100% success rate.

Just watched the replay, SPS was better than I gave him credit for while watching live. Dow was solid, so was Kennedy.

Umpires were awful, but we are a pretty one eyed crowd, so booing and moaning when obvious frees paid against us... but that was after an ordinary run I am willing to concede,

Again - good to get the win

GMC in VIC

PS 6 year old kid sitting behind me made my night, very vocal and very knowledgeable - he is a big Owies fan :)

Also, Harry needs a kicking coach asap

Teague!

On Jack Silvagni, the second ruck:

He came to me after the game and said he was only down for one hitout when he had two. He was going to go to Champion Data and make sure they review that. We didn’t really have anyone over six foot one playing in our VFL side, so we had to improvise. He put his hand up, he’s a competitor. I thought he did some great things, not only in the ruck: him and his teammates’ ability to get body on Reilly O’Brien - who we rate highly - around the ground to give us the best chance, the team did a good job as did Jack and Tom De Koning.

On Liam Stocker:

He grew up playing inside mid and he’s tough. Right now, with our team and with the opportunity that came up for him was across half back. We’ve loved his ability to concentrate. We feel it’s an underrated skill to concentrate and stay on task and he’s been doing that quite while. He’s had some big challenges over the past few weeks. He defended strongly but he also stood up in the contest, while he’s always been a very good kick on both his right and left foot.

With about a 1 in 10 strike rate over the past 20 years there, not many of us have either.

We WON!

Of course there is room for alot if improvement. But finally we see SPS play decent time in the midfield and play very well. Williams much better same with Saad. Much better tackling pressure but still room for improvement. That multiple goal burst in the second was sublime. Missed opportunities at goal in the last made this a closer game than it should have been but there have been many games where we would have choked and lost from there.

That late second quarter burst almost brought me back to the great Carlton teams of the 70's and 80's. The days where we just put the foot down for 5 - 10 minutes and the job was done.
Like I said .... "almost". Different eras, different times but the guys here who witnessed those days probably had similar flashbacks.
This team isn't a patch on those teams but who knows what the future holds.
Believe and commit to the task every week.

Stocker, Kennedy, Walsh, Weitering all good today

Premiership quarter. Only needed one but it was the 3rd not 2nd.

Those teams of yesteryear were so arrogant they knew one quarter was all that was needed, particularly at Princes Park.

I saw those teams live.

Dominance.

Why Carlton supporters are known as the most arrogant in the league.

Even in these not so heady days.

Yeah Teddy .... we were arrogant lot (both players and supporters). We just knew that 10 minutes was enough. We just had the confidence that we'd walk out winners.
Nowadays if/when we get close it's heart in mouth stuff.

Pros:

Finally got a win.
Ballistic 2nd quarter.
Weaker opposition, but the best I've seen us defensively this year.
Jones, Saad and Walsh were brilliant.
Weitering, Williams and Betts very good.
Very encouraging performance from Dow. Used the ball well.
Cripps certainly didn't dominate, but played smarter than he has for a while.
Liked seeing Samo around the ball.
Smart use of Cripps and SOJ as back up rucks.

Cons:

Couldn't ice the game in the last quarter.
Smashed again in the clearances.
Some disappointing set shots from Harry and Martin.

Yeah, got to think if Charlie ever returns and shows he can still play again, we'll be a much better team. Lot of attention gets directed towards Harry.

I’m not trying to be negative, just keeping a cool head for the longer term decisions we need to make whether or not we win a few games in the back half of this year.

I think we have improved overall but am still concerned that the ladder we are building is set against the wrong wall.

I do have to say that I was happy with Dow today and hope he continues on this trajectory.
And I was really impressed with Saad - his kicking was fantastic, and that tackle was awesome.

I really hope the players and coaches dont get ahead of themselves. Happy to get the win and see the boys enjoy on field, but we are in no way out of trouble.

What made me most happy last night was the games of Dow, Stocker, SPS, hope this is the start of continual improvement.

Go again Blues
