Controversial here for those who seem to want murph shot, I think he’s been excellent the last month.

Not a huge Murf fan but he has had a solid month

It's hard to form a balanced view of Murphy...
He got the footy a lot, seems to be willing to be physically competitive and recently has been working super hard to be involved.
But it feels like he just doesn't use the ball well enough. Poor options and too often poor skills. Too many times he puts us in a worse position and too often helps the opposition.
He was never elite but he used to be better.
How often do we say "Fantastic!" when he is involved in the play?

He was absolutely elite in 2011. Pretty close to elite for a few years around that, and maybe close again for a year sometime later but I’ve kind of blocked out the Malthouse years.

His disposal has declined at a rate of knots but strangely what seems worse than his disposal itself is his decision making. A few kicks and handballs last night that had an air of a deer in the headlights first gamer shitting his pants. It’s really strange. He was such a good user at his peak

If you tell a lie often enough people will start to believe it then it becomes the truth.
About 2 or so years back when we lost every game people were looking for and scape goat and they turned on Murphy.
Since then the numbers of people who have jumped on board this band wagon has increased so now it is just a given despite how good he plays he is a liability and should be dropped.
It's a joke Murphy would be top 5 in the B&F for sure and people are just potting him because its the in thing to do.

I was critical of him last week but thought he tried his guts out last night. Plenty of skill errors but he wasn't alone there. 13 contested last night.

Not many moments of pure joy in life. The end last night was pure joy. Football gives us that on rare occasions, made all the more sweet by the knashing of teeth and whining from others. Go blues
PS the Riccardi kick was touched!

We've had some weird results. The one pt loss to Melbourne coming from 42 behind, 2pts win at Geelong after being 42pts in front, won a game by a pt against Essendon* that was saved by a falcon, lost with a kick after the siren to Port, then won with a kick after the siren against Freo in really weird circumstances.

Tough game and deserved the win.

Thought our midfield would grind a win and it did.

Ed, Murph Cripps all supported Walsh well enough to get us over the line. Ed was fantastic. Walshy all class and found space.

Whilst Murph's decision making and disposal isn't what it was, I thought he went in for the hard ball a few times which was great to see. A great example for the kids.

Eddie Betts may not be amongst the goals, but geez he sets a great example of closing down space and applying and creating perceived pressure.
Things will go his way again. He will be rewarded. He assisted Walsh and its not far away.

TDK was fantastic for a young giraffe.
Made for centre bounce and played well in tight, but he looked insignificant at the boundary throw ins: not strong enough.
Is he worth persisting with in the seniors? Will do him and the team wonders in the long run getting games into him this year
It will drive him over the preseason to get bigger and stronger to play the No.1 ruck. Can't see him peaking for another 2-3 years.

Cotterel looks made for Simmo's spot.
Has pace to burn. Must look around to connect with team mates by hand.

Honey looks like AFL material. Moved well, one handed pick up ... strong boy. Didn't look out of place.

We need more class and speed in the midfield. Have to trade in a couple strong bodied classy mids till the kids are ready.

Cerra, same age as Dow (both born Oct 99) looked good, but he didn't dominate, just as Dow doesn't, and Brayshaw and Sarong got beaten by our youngest mid, that kid Walsh.

Jones missed mark, allowed them an easy goal at the back to taberner.
FFS, I wish Jones just punches the ball, even if he thinks he can mark.
Will make a huge difference to winning or losing.

Weitering beat Taberner on the night, and I really rate Taberner.

Player I was most disappointed with was Williamson, but as I said last week, whilst he is still developing, and learns to stop slipping over (dry and wet games) and gets back to doing what he was doing 2 years ago when he was 19yo, he will continue to grow and will be our HBF for a long time.

Feel the weakest of the oldies has been Simmo over the last month, and he needs a rest. If not, there's the compressed fixture that will force players to be rested.

With Marchbank, Dow playing well in the 2's, and Martin, Cuningham, McGovern off injury list, we will get stronger as injury list down to 3 best 22 players, with plenty of pressure for spots in a team who may play finals.

Will be difficult decisions made on players for next week's game, let alone the next 6 games. All the abovementioned who missed yesterday will feature at some stage, and already there's pressure for spots. Can't wait to see Marchbank play that wing role he was earmarked to play last year in the preseason. A marking mid who can run offensively and defensively will be a huge assett, and Harry and Levi can then stay closer to home.

Great kick by Newnes. Lady luck had a hand, but you still have to be a great kick to put it through the 2 big sticks ... anytime, but after the siren ... special.

Happy Sunday.
I read that this is only the 4th time in VFL/AFL history that a team has lost a game after the siren and won a game after the siren in the same season.

Not sure if anyone has seen it but there is a great video shared on instagram showing the other Carlton players watching the game at the team hotel.
Their reaction is priceless.

Priceless.

All the players, on the list are invested in the team. You could feel it in that Instgram from Kemp's account ..hearing yells "you @#$%&! beauty...."

We have something special brewing amongst the team mates.

I can see a sad Kennedy-Judd like trade coming at the end of the season.
Will be sad because they seem a close knit team ... and they all believe they can beat anyone..I believe that.

and it was the first time we kicked less than 50 points in a game this year.
We were the only team to kick at least 50 points in every game this year.

I'll take a win with 42 points any day of the week.

Go Blues

I fear you're right about Fyfe (whose game was pretty handy but not BOG).

At least the commentators noticed Ed this week. He does a lot more than he gets credit for. Several times he's tagged someone out of the game and commentators have afterthoughts about his opponent's bewildering lack of impact. Apart from his accumulation in this game, I wouldn't be surprised if he restricted one or two opponents' games while he was at it (I was too engrossed in our glacial comeback to notice). It's a shame his disposal is pretty bad, as he's pretty accountable otherwise.

Regarding the downfield free, it was a bit soft and I'd be livid if I were a Freo supporter, but the umps set a precedent by giving them 2 soft frees for pushing after the kick earlier in the quarter, so really they had to pay ours.

I've always defended Newnes on this site, he has a beautiful right foot. Hopefully the calls to drop him will abate for a few weeks.

I think a lot of us were seething about the two goal umpire buffer they had for most of the game.

I was actually pretty hopeful when I saw Newnes had it. From that spot, with a greasy ball, I thought his action was equal to anyone in our side. I'm still trying to get over the beauty of the shot though. I leapt from the chair like a leaping thing.

(Sorry to piggyback everyone else's obs. Just too lazy to do my own review.)

Yes, Willo had a look and let Fyfe steal it. I wasn't happy, but he toughened up after that. While it was entertaining at first to watch replays of Simmo's header, Willo's crucial tackle on Fyfe just after that got no attention in the coverage. It deserved a mention, seeing everyone else has so much trouble pinning Fyfe down.

That Willo thing wasn't nearly as bad as some are making out.

He's our best exit strategy out of defence and should be used a lot more.

Tabenar was ok. But of his 3 goals , one was the softest free you will ever see, another was a direct result of jones dropping a sitter and falling into his hands and he had one good contested mark. He was ok around the ground on occasion but had a total of 12 possessions.

I thought weathering was fantastic tonight as he has been all year.

Thank you.

Commentators going on about Weitering being beaten. In addition to the above, he did some excellent assists around the ground in the last while Taberner was snoozing near the goal square, hoping for a lazy one (as is his right, but his opponent was helping a forward press that ultimately succeeded). One successful one-on-one is hardly a conclusive victory.

Taberner beat him cleanly once from what i saw.

I though Weiters was good and killed the incoming ball regularly.

That tackle from SPS with 3 mins to go was a game winner.

Good hard contested game from the boys in very slippery conditions.

There were a couple of howlers from the umps against both teams but I didn't think they were as bad as many here think . Maybe it's just me watching the replay this morning in the cool light of day.

Like the look of the new guys Cottrell and Honey. Great movers and good kicks of the footy. TDK will be a beauty.

So happy for Noons. That's a dream moment to remember forever.

Too right. SPS wasn't his usual calm self at the start of the game. I wondered if that atrocious Weagles decision against him caused his early panic sprays. His game wasn't great but he persisted and found his groove again.

I agree Rexy. To me it was just a tangle of arms & ball & Fyfe had the momentum so he was able to steal it.

Robbie Gray is quite conceivable. But Jack Newnes just completely Moran'd Freo
