This time next year will we be watching the Carlton as we know it?

What's going to change?

Which AFL clubs are under the most threat?

I'd love to be able to have some positive answers to your questions.
But right now I've got nothin'.

I wonder if they keep drawing membership dues from the credit card.

A big superdraft might be coming up....
If so I'm glad we haven't traded any future picks.
Salary cap could be a problem.

No idea either but it will be the great balance between what can be salvaged from the TV rights money vs AFL expenditure.

Your Norths and Doggies will have those belts well and truly tightened. All plans for various ground and club expansions will be in 'No man's land'.

I'd keep them and add 2 more teams. More games = more tv revenue

30 player lists with ability to draw on state league top ups if req
2 conferences of 10 teams
18 round Home and Away season
Top 6 in each conference play finals.

Another year of compromised drafts - no thank you.

We will come out of it at the other end because we have the supporter base to do it and the history to back us up .

The only way to cut senior lists and play a season of footy is for each team to have a team in the second tier league. On top of that, they have a feeder U18 club, ours being the Northern Nights, for example.
It's a variation of the firsts, seconds and U19s. Teams get dibs on their U18 club which substitutes for their academy.

Games involving a Vic club which traditionally attract crowds less than 20k get played at PP, which is already being developed for the AFLW and has a great surface. The facilities need an upgrade but the need for a boutique oval to cut costs of games that run at a loss is paramount.

The premise for raising GCS, the population growth of the region has not turned into crowd numbers. Move them to Tassie lock, stock and playing list and watch the Tassie crowds get behind them. Kick Hawthorn out of Tassie to make it a one team state.

The big issue will be the first year back, next year. I doubt all clubs will get through this, perhaps resulting in mergers or foldings. Fortunately we are in a much better off-field state than we were a few years ago. Had this happened in say, 2016 when we were up to our ears in debt, we wouldn't have come through it. Maybe now is the time to merge with North.

There is an entire other possibility, which is that Eddie and Bloody Jeff get together with the interstate presidents and a super-league of say nine teams is formed, whereby each play each other twice and then the finals start. It happened with the NRL and there is no real reason why it couldn't happen with the AFL. If the GF were played in different venues like the superbowl, it would make it more attractive for the interstate teams and get rid of the reliance on the MCG, which would not be available due to its contracts with the AFL. If it looks like half a dozen clubs are going to prop up the other twelve, I think this is a real possibility. The mere threat of it will make the AFL sit up and consider tough options that would otherwise be unthinkable.

The XFL in the USA is proving a success from a TV point of view. It came from nowhere. The players are not contracted to the NFL teams but they were putting on a good show before this thing closed them down. Someone thought outside the box.

I reckon they should fold the league as it is and re-hash it like this:

Vic Clubs:

Northern Blues
Southern Saints
Eastern Hawks
Western Bulldogs
Melbourne Demons

(Conveniently this does away with Essendon**, Richmond and Collingwood).

Then we have two teams in each of SA, WA, NSW and QLD. One team in NT. One team in Tassie.

15 teams. Old final 6 format.

Build a museum of the old clubs, uniforms, etc. etc....

I was wondering that too when my account was debited last week.
I won't be wanting anything back from the club but with so many job losses now you cannot blame anyone wanting a refund or the payments to stop.
Really tough times ahead for so many of us, makes us realize that footy is only a game. Although one that we are going to miss for now.
I hope everyone stays safe and healthy during some tough months ahead.
