AFL players want to play this weekend.

A majority of players at tonight’s landmark meeting, convened by the AFL Players Association via teleconference with more than 800 of the cohort from around the country, supported a plan to kick off Round 1 on Thursday night.

The players were presented with a range of options that could have been available today but have united to play from this weekend if the landscape remains as it is today.

A lot can change by Thursday night but, at this stage, the season will kick off at the MCG between Richmond and Carlton.

There has been no resolution to the issue of pay, with the league having proposed players take a 20 per cent pay cut as clubs and the league desperately seek to cut costs amid the crisis.

A government health official was also part of the teleconference.
Pretty sure I can guess who's opinion holds the most weight.

"The players want to play" is the dumbest reason to go ahead possible.

I heard on radio that Pendles has not been cleared of CV as yet. Tests are pending (+another 2 players). Likely that there are more at other clubs.

I doubt he has contracted it but you never know.

I'd say one of the reasons the AFL didn't call it off last night was due to these pending results. Imagine saying game on and then Wednesday someone tests positive for it.

Regardless, they should have deferred the start until at least Easter weekend.

I just did my test, get a result in next two days. Seems suspicious it’s taking so long.

“The players want to get paid”.

I hope Dangerfield gets it, then Dutton can send him packing to the corona camp.

Anyway ... I hope the game is played on Thursday. Winter is Coming ... and its only going to get worse. I would be very surprised if the season is not cancelled in the end.

Go Blues!

Shame you aren't running the country....

Come to think of it, you should be running the Action Team which we still haven't set up....
Most of the current decisions are being made on stuff other than the reality of the virus....(AFL, Scotty, Dan)... THAT'S DANGEROUS....
Ask an Epidemiologist/virologist what should be done... And DO IT

Go Blues

Agreed re 3 weeks.
Agree with Whateley for the first time in a long long time.

Just the last 24 hours affecting my household:

School Camp suspended
Swans Academy suspended.
Local footy training and games suspended.
News Limited Head Office, staff forced to work from home next 2 weeks (for a start) as of today.

Its not about what govt is not doing and saying, its about what all the responsible types are doing.

Public Transport should continue with safety measures in place...face masks, personal space etc...the problem is the work force is forced to go to work, hence the nose to nose in trains.

Call the games off, lets stop the spread and geton top of this in 2 weeks or.....

134 people died in Italy over the weeekend.
Over the last 24 hours, a further 370 died in Italy.
Once this virus takes hold, everything will close down. Everywhere.
Then its on for young and old.

Short term pain, long term gain.

Seriously ... you agree with Whately when he says the AFL has to come in line with the community? Its simply untrue by Whately (and I usually agree with him). The community is not taking anywhere near the measures that sport is taking. Its a joke ... Businesses are still operating ... people are still working and packed into trains like sardines. What he is saying is so far from reality its fraudulent. As I said before ... Open air sporting events are a pee in the ocean compared to public transport.

Go Blues!

Betts Charlie H Marchbank not as though any of them are in our best 22
Every year we seem to have critical pre season injuries
Apart from Cripps Charlie and Eddie are our star power /game changers And to a lesser extent H may be in that category in the future
Pre-season yes it is only pre-season has been disaster

More lack of leadership by AFL delaying decision on round 1 tomorrow
Other sports are laughing at the AFL with their mixed messages and lack of decisive action

You need to protect the players from themselves these are the people who are always alright to play when concussed look at the evidence now in respect to concussion
You need to protect them they will always want to play regardless of the circumstances
It is an occupational health and safety issue put the players and everyone else in the community first look for once beyond the almighty dollar -AFL have a huge contingency fund NOW is the time to use it

Show leadership Gil it’s what you are being paid for to make the tough decisions

yes and you forgot the part ... as long as they don't spread the virus.
That's all I give a shit about.

Stop the spread and kill it ... till there's a vaccine.

Every thing other than NRL, ARL & AFL is suspended.

Says a lot.

Have to think the game is on.

Richmond have lost Houli, and that's a huge win for us.
I guess he counters Betts.
Betts worth more to us than Houli is to them.

No Charlie Curnow
No Harry McKay
No Betts.

That is our bonafide firepower in the forwardline.

We win the midfield and Teague sets up a winning plan for the forwardline (like he did at Crows), and we have to be a show.

The players want to play ... that's what the survey says.
I guess I have to see the survey questions first.

I bet the game goes ahead if there's no positive player/staff tests by tomorrow. The AFL are leaving it until as late as possible.

I'm expecting Cuningham to come onto the bench instead of Obrien despite OBrien plaaying much better than Cunners in that last VFL game.

I'm expecting Gibbons o play in the forward line, maybe high forward, coz he can, and Martin is the other forward with McGovern.

Talls to be Levi 200cm and Silvagni 194cm
Gov can take high marks

We have to manufacture goals.

Levi can clunk them
Silvagni can manufacture them, and mark a couple.

Can the above 2 kick straight?
That's the ticket imo.

To give us any chance kicking a winning score in a low scoring game.

The players are greedy, hope Gil postpones it until the end of May as well. See how big the balls are of the players them in trying to sue clubs for money they don’t have.

The result of this game or any other game I honestly couldn't give a @#$%&! about.

I'm more worried about society getting restless if they're not distracted by their sporting interests.

I really hope all participants stay healthy and thus are allowed to entertain us.
