If the game goes ahead, we lose, and then the season gets cancelled on Friday, do we finish 2nd or last? :D

Agree. Even May. Run two divisions then with 9 game season, top 2 of each play, then a GF.

You've gotta call it off. What if a team or players get sick in the run-up to a final... or THE final?

Seasons were stopped in the past for WW's...

I say play on without crowds.

Allow state league replacement players to fill any vacant list spots if required.

The public needs sport as a distraction from the real world issues.

Postpone the start of the season only sensible option
Show some leadership AFL
Do you really think this is a healthy working environment for players coaches etc

Pendlebury allegedly sent home with flu like symptoms how many others do you think may have it

Not many love footy more than me but starting the season on Thursday in the face of this epidemic and the fact that State Government has put us on emergency footing today and employers of small and large business are making employees work from home is complete lunacy

I agree with those who are suggesting a 17 game season.
The only issue is, who plays at home and who plays away?
Maybe we should do it every year.
This entire thing is being driven by the broadcasting rights contract.
Now Pendles looks like he might have it, w haveto assume the entire Collingwood list might have is but be without symptoms for the next 12 days. (If he proves positive)
Nobody should be asked to play or train with or against him until it's resolved.
If they can cancel the NBA and the MLB looks like t won't even start, this tiny-tots comp we call ours has to follow suite.
Plus we need the break.

Does a 17 game season assume that all will be well, or under control, in six weeks or so?

And if so, do we have enough information to know if a six week break is a realistic outcome?

Agree with many above - postpone for a month.

Move to a 17 game fixture to begin in 4 weeks pending how the situation develops.

The AFL has 2 months up their sleeves if they move to a 17 game fixture for this year. Frees up 5 weeks, plus the two bye weeks can go if need be, and the AFL apparently doesn’t have to hand over the MCG to cricket until 2 weeks after the scheduled grand final so that frees up another 2 weeks if need be.

Re-assess the situation in a month and push back another month (if necessary) before making the final call.

If the peak is going to be in May/June as has been suggested then that’ll be the point where the largest number of players are actually infected.

Season is over.

exactly GWS, so maybe just have each of the two sides only play each other for 22 rounds (eg we pay Richmond 22 times). Highest percentage wins the cup!

My point is you need to play this strategically. Once you start the season you are locked in to ridiculous options like playing every day of the week just to play all 168 games (or however many it is).

1. Postpone start to Easter.
2. Spend the time reviewing matters calmly until then.
3. If still no progress or improvement postpone again.
4. Reduce schedule to 17 weeks and its fair to all up front. Just ensure that you only go to Perth, Adelaide, Sydney or Qld once.

Makes sense.

If we are to play Thursday night it will be interesting to see the how the boys have mentally prepared themselves for the game . A completely unique situation with no crowd. It will be a real insight for the coaching staff, club and supporters to see who and how they handle it . I would think that would be the main focus this week at training . I hope we get a pleasant surprise.

Surely people aren't surprised that all of the AFL's preferred options revolve around cramming as many games onto TV as possible before they're told to stop?

Was told today that refunds for the game will be credited to those who played by credit card in 20 working days.

Sounds workable.

If/when the season starts, I think it's going to be okay if, after that point, the season needs to be cancelled altogether. And that's something that should be in the plans as a worst case scenario. By that I mean, just because the season has started doesn't mean a predetermined outcome has to happen (all 168 games etc).

These here are crazy times.

Agree.

And doesn't that put Victorian teams at a distinct disadvantage if, say the WAFL/SANFL etc don't follow suit? You'll have the situation where interstate teams will be able to play non-selected list players and Vic teams won't.
