Why not?

He's tall... strong.... quick... good leap.... has long arms.....

You don't need to make a lot of the play at fullback either.

Might be worth a punt, if Livo doesn't succeed? Might be a great place to learn the game, watch the flow further ahead of him, and maybe move up the ground when/if a guy like Hartlett is ready to hold down the spot.

Any thoughts?

I think he has a way to go in terms of nous before I would be playing him on the last line of defense. When I have seen him he has played his best footy down forward...
He has a come along away from when he first arrived so I dont discount him playing at FB down the track but sometimes he can look a bit lost and loses his bearings on where to run to etc and that could be more costly down back than if he plays forward...I also look forward to him teaming up with Fev as footy's version of the odd couple.. I expect him to fly for marks against other carlton players and do some silly things but its all part of the learning process.
I think his brother Aisake might be value down back..some of VFL watchers have reported he has done ok down there and looks a very versatile big man...

thornton should be our regular fullback, I'd try waite at CHB - he seems tailor made for mine, and we have a shite load of key forwards coming thru. Either way some serious re-jigging needs to be done cos our defense sucks arse and i can't see saddo taking 200 points off our season total.

I thought Setanta looked good at FB in his first game for us in the pre-season two years back, and I thought he looked hopeless at FF in the last Ants game last year. I think it just depends what day you see him play. He is still learning so he has good days and bad days. I would like to see him get a go either at FF or FB in the pre-season games, if the coach thinks he is capable enough.

Good points here. I think for his development I would be playing him off the bench this year, and putting him on resting rucks... guys like Lade etc. Its the only way he'll learn.... and he might surprise us all!

As for Thornton, I reckon fullback for Thornton is a waste of his ability. I loved him setting up play in the Wizard up last year. I don't know why people want to move him from CHB. I reckon he's a natural there. Closer to goal and his size may prove tricky against big opponents, but at CHB he can create and run, etc. If I was picking the Carlton team, Thornton at CHB would be the first name I'd write in, to be honest.

I don't know how big Santy would handle the pressure of FB - has he had a run there with the ants?

I like the idea of him being a foil in the forward line - kinda like what Judas Hamill used to be.

Was this thread just a tongue in cheek response to your little debate with theGame, Tyrant?

Its the true visionaries that come up with the good debates in here, Molsey.

Setanta for fullback..... you'll all bow to me when it happens.

I don't write things that are tongue-in-cheek, molsey.

T-bird is our best defender by a fair way so i think his position is a week to week propisition. ie. against port i'd have him at CHB on tredrea, whereas i'd have him at FB on Hall for sydney games. Don't underestimate his size either, got a feeling that after this preseason he'll be proper sized key back. I think he'll nail a position once he gets a bit of support.

Setanta - another full year with the Bullants is the most likely scenario.

Thornton - best played away from full back. Is creative and should be played across half back. The opposition love to isolate him at full back on a taller/stronger opponent.

Saddington (if knee isn't playing up) should play full back.

Does anyone know if Saddington trained today? His troublesome knee was inflamed 10 days before Christmas.

Saw him doing sprints with the injured group in Fevola, Waite, and I think Kennedy and Edwards but not too sure or the latter. Have to say ran very well and always finish infront or thereabouts which is excellent for a bloke with his big frame.

3 points there:

point 1 - personally, I hope not
point 2 - completely agree
point 3 - I doubt it. I think Saddo will be our 3rd man. We're stuck with playing Livo at fullback and hoping. If he swims... great! If he drowns, then its experimentation time, by trying someone like Hartlett... or (and this was the premise for the thread) someone like Santy.
