I used to go to the footy in 95 pretty much to just "WOOF" when Christou kicked the ball, as a kid it was the best thing to hear the whole ground echo.

How did it start, who had it before Christou, who made it up?¿

My earliest memory is of Warren 'WOW' Jones being bestowed with the woof.

Why I don't know though - it's pretty cool, something uniquely Carlton. No other club has anything like it.

The woof originated at Princes Park on "The Mound" - on the old press box wing side (where the Elliott/Heroes Stand is.

It did start in Val Perovic's first season with Carlton in 1980.

My understanding was that it was started by a group of University Students who regularly inhabited "The Mound".

Others may be able to add more detail.

Definitely started on the press box wing.

For younger posters - the area where the Heroes stand now is used to be a mound including a press box. It used to look great from the other side of the ground on a big game day - just a seething mass of a humanity.

My understanding is similar to Agro's, started by Uni students in the early 80's - Perovics 1st season with the Blues was 1980, can't remember if the woof started that season or a little later.

I do remember someone in the group being interviewed and they were actually chanting boof, (ie the sound of the ball hitting boot), but the press stuffed it up and reported it as woof.

In that era all the crowd sound effects came from that area of the ground - due to pres box location. There was also a prolific whistler who was prominent during some our premiership 3rd quarters of the day.

I would love someone to make a compilation tape / dvd of the premiership quarters of the early 80's. I'd buy one in a flash.

The player chronology of the woof is:

- Val Perovic (1980 to 1985)
- Ang Christou (1991 to 2002)
- Chris Bryan - (2005 to ) now appears to have taken over the mantle, but Adam Hartlett is poised to take over.

Not sure if it has been accorded to anyone else as the careers of these 3 players dont overlap. :?

I'm sure the woof started with Ang Christou. I can't remember anyone having the woof before him.

:P

Boof eh?

Let's hope Bryan can carry on the legend!!! :-D

I remember woofing my heart out every time Big Val received a handball from the doormat and sent it flying out to the wing at VFL park.

That was 1982 and I was 12 years old. Definitely the woof pre-ceded Ang, and it appears fell into abeyance between Val and Ang. Presumably Steve Kernahan's helicopter mongrels were not deemed worthy....

Definite big Val "woof" Perovic used to love standing by the grog squad and letting the war cry out. Wonder what if any affect it had on the Pera or the playing group? Did it give a big surge or a annoyance?

I cant ever recall wow gettin the woof as he kicked it.

That's one of my earliest memories of footy, going tot he games & hearing the crowd shout 'woof'. I was only very young (maybe 4 or 5??). When Ang inherited it, fullmont's dad would tell the best stories about the 'woof'. It's ingrained into myself & fullmont & it's great that another player has inherited it.

Val also has a plaque at the Duke of Wellington celbrating his achievement in shotgunning beer cans.

He was also well known for his ability to wear thongs everywhere, no matter what the occasion.
