Watched it last night for the first time in a loooooong time.

What a magnificent coaching performance by Robert Walls on the day. The players were supremely fit and Walls managed them magnificently on and off the bench in the 30 odd degree conditions. Geez we had some great runners that day with Johnston, Bradley, Naley, Glascott, Richard Dennis (who played a great game btw) and Tommy Alvin who towelled up Buckenara. Whilst sticks lowered his colours to Langford in the forward line others stepped up such as Kenny Hunter, Dorotich and Warren McKenzie. SOS, Peter Dean and Rhys-Jones were simply outstanding in defence while Ian Aitken stood tall as well.

We had some magnificent leaders that day in Johnston who "set the tone" in the 1st qtr with a ferocious attack on the ball and the contest (handed out a ripper of an elbow to Dipper), Peter Dean in defense who was magnificent, Sticks of course directing traffic, Harry Madden who stitched up Dear in the ruck but we also had the lesser lights in Naley, Gleeson, Aitken, Dennis, Robertson, Alvin who performed their roles grandly on the biggest stage of all.

It was a magnificent CLUB effort that day. We thrashed a great Hawthorn side in the middle of its prime. It was a powerhouse performance in very oppressive conditions and boy did we enjoy it when it was over. To see our current President in such raptures after the game on the ground showed how much it meant.

I know 1995 is regarded by most as the ultimate but to me 1987 was the most enjoyable to watch. Your thoughts on which was your most enjoyable Grand Final victory to watch.

There's so much I could say...

Great day and made up for the thrashing we got at the hands of Hawthorn the Year before - it also probably stopped Hawthorn from winning 4 flags in a row as well.

But all the cards fell for us that season:

Last Round 22 -v- North Melbourne where Sticks kicked a goal after the siren and we won by 4 points which ensured us finishing top spot and meant we had a double chance and what turned out to be 2 lots of 1 weeks rest.

Melbourne and Hawthorn playing out a very heavy duty Preliminary Final which took the wind right out of Hawthorn's sails and meant that we were full of running during the 31 degree temperatures of the Grand Final.

As Wes Lofts was quoted as saying after the 87 Grand Final win - "one of the most ordinary Carlton sides ever to win a flag". Although having said that there were some pretty good Carlton Premiership sides to compare it too.

I would draw the line at Warren "Kick a goal in rubbish time" McKenzie's performance, however the rest of your analysis is spot on. If Richard Dennis had of kicked straight he might have challenged for the Norm, I think he kicked 4 behinds from memory.

Thats my take on the 1987 Grand Final anyway.

He was a pretty good mark and kick (possibly a tad slow) - he probably could have held down Centre Half Forward if it wasn't for a pretty good Centre Half Forward that we recruited from South Australia, I think Stephen Kernahan was his name.

But the goal he kicked in the 1987 Grand Final was definitely in rubbish time.

I've watched the DVD of it and thought the game was boring. Would probably appreciate it more if I was around at the time.

Next time get about 6-7 Schooners into you then watch it - Great Game

the 1987 grand final is preferred for me over 1995. Beating Hawthorn.. the power team of the 80's... was a remarkable effort.

I agree with pretty much all you said, budzy.

Richard Dennis did play a great game. He was the one who tapped it out of the pack to Meldrum in the 3rd quarter for that easy goal. Quality team effort.

The quality of the goals in that match are impressive. I particularly liked when Meldrum gave a hip and shoulder to Mew? or Greene? put him off balance, ran on to collect the ball and passed to Kernahan - who goaled from 50 metres out.

There were some quality goals kicked in the last quarter too.

I still haven't seen this match, they never replay this whole match on TV!

Rhys-Jones was brilliant, but to be honest, Brereton just had a shocker that day. Couldn't take a mark to save himself.

Tommy Alvin was absolutely brilliant, BOG up til half time. Buckenara would have registered single-digit number of possies, none of them were particularly dangerous.

Team effort as mentioned was the reason we won it.

i went to this game and a mate who got the tickets for me was a hawks supporter.One of his mates sat next to me and had to take his tweed jacket off it was so hot (31 degrees).The same arrangement with this pompous supporter occured in 86.At least I stayed to the bitter end that year.This prick suprisingly had to go early in the last quarter.What a cauliflower.He is apparently a lawyer now.Would not want him representing me when the situation turned sticky.That was the best thing about this final.The revenge from the previous year.The actual game was shit because of the heat the wind and the ground which was slippery for some reason.

Two things I also remember.When the players did their lap of honour around the ground I put my longed sleeved wooly Blues jumper on and I swear Johnno saw me and waved because I was the only [REDACTED] in the southern stand wearing a jumper.The other thing was Peter Gee interviewing Buckley who was a member of the winning Magoos side and Jimmy had leather pants on.Obviously was in for a pretty huge night.

I remember the run-on of goals in Q4 & the guys were pretty excited & Sticks was running laps around the forward line trying to settle everyone down.

Oh yeah, & the Stand By Your Man debacle on the monday.

I went to the 86 as well on borrowed MCC members medallions that we kept passing back through the fence. About 10 of us got in after we'd travelled over from the mines in WA without any hope of a ticket.
THe rest were all hawks fans and it was one of the longest days of my life. But entirely memorable for Bruce Doull's last game.

I'll never forget the end of the game, we'd bee thrashed by about 45 points, and Doully simply walked off and up the race and waved about once.

Compare that to the bullshit that transpires nowadays when some nobody calls it quits.

I'm man enough to say I had a tear in my eye.

Hence 87 was a magnificent win.

I believe Brereton carried a rib injury into that game - which is why he couldn't catch anything - but Rhys-Jones was magnificent that day.

I did the same and spent the game in the Long Room getting well and truly hammered which is just as well because it was a pretty forgettable day.
