How on earth did we select Dow ahead of Cerra? It could really come back and haunt us.
I know that physics and rate of development in youngsters vary.
But wow Cerra can play.

He was who i wanted at pick 3. Is a good in traffic and a great kick of the football.
I can see why we wanted Dow's clearance work and pace at the stoppage, but he has nowhere near the disposal of Cerra.
That said, I'm expecting i'll learn to hate Cerra as much as I do Luke Shuey (who i also wished we'd drafted at the time  ).

I would have taken him at Pick 10.

I don’t normally watch this show as I don’t respect either Robbo or Whateley. I do watch Wednesday night as I respect King and Maclure...but anyway was flicking channels and came across Robbo stating on AFL360,
“If we don’t give them help (concessions/draft picks) this is going to takes another five, six years”... “or they’ll be down for 10 years.” “They can’t just wither.”

Now which club is Robbo referring to? Has he seen the light on Carlton’s dark predicament?

Think again. He was referring to the AFL pet project Gold Coast. Watch at the end of this year...assistance will flow to Gold Coast & nothing will go to Carlton.

I posted something similar in another thread. Robbo wrote the same thing in the paper today. Makes me sick. It is okay for us to struggle for more than a decade but we can't have Gold Coast going through the same thing.

Geez some people need to find another sport where the mean and nasty AFL can't hurt them!! The club has :censored: it up for 17yrs and need to continue to fix the current problems and probably the same people who wanted Pagan or Malthouse signed or Ratten sacked are the ones whinging on here now about how bad it is!!
Do I agree with everything the club does? No! But we have finally gone down the track of using the draft which will benefit us for a decent period of time not just short term.

If we’re truly using the draft why are we refusing an extra priority pick in the draft?

....because they don’t want it. So seems we don’t really believe in going to the draft

Yeah, I’m a real barrel of laughs. Lots of fun to be around..not.

Here’s another amusing element to add to the equation.

12 person competition committee as approved by Gil and Clarko at Hawthorn includes not one Carlton identity. Luckily, Gold Coast got the only player selected outside poster boy Dangerfield in Steven May.

2 of 3 CEO’s selected from Syd and Hawthorn & only 2 club coaches bne and Nth.

All of these people highly concerned Carlton on 1 win so far this season...of course. Icing on cake Eddie was there

Eddie would want carlton firing again. It is good for footy. We have a huge fan base ...just not paying members right now. I have faith in the process... I can see us climbing rapidly in a year or two.
The game plan supports the current shortages...look what happened to Saints. We did amazingly well against Swans...cudos to coach. Why do people not get we have most of our A list defenders out injured? We will be capable of a lot more run and attack very soon. Chin up laddie!! The future is almost upon us.

It is not about appropriating blame. Is Carlton in this predicament because 30% - coaching decisions 20% - recruiting decisions, 40% AFL decisions? 10% - training/recovery decisions?
How do you divide it up and what is the point of dividing it up anyway when the club is ON ONLY ONE WIN at this point of the season.

The only question relevant is

1) do you support the AFL putting heaps of money, assistance, financial, intellectual etc support into pet project teams eg Gold Coast, Sydney Swans, Brisbane Lions etc with money taken from "richer" clubs such as Carlton?

2) do you support the present structure of AFL recruiting with the draft, salary cap and free agency?

If your answer is you are happy with both AFL giving preferential treatment (And it is backed up by people in the media) to certain clubs for the "good of the game"...Robbo "we can't have Gold Coast wither" & you are also happy with a situation where Gibbs, Tuohy etc end up at other clubs with no REAL compensation then so be it.

Therefore the conclusion is Carlton will accept their medicine and thrashings stoically. Also, expect it to take at least another 5 years of Carlton being a rubbish team. At least in this scenario Carlton didn't "whinge" as money, resources and good people left the club.

The mouse that roared in front of a lion. Carlton is whimpering, accepting, pathetic club. It either must stand up to the AFL and its "expansion program". The alternative is to be run by the AFL just like Melbourne. The present status quo isn't working.

I truly believe it won't take too much to turn the club around. Midfield is the big key and a decent one would make a hell of a difference. If we could pick up a Wines or a Gaff .... then get a Wallis or a Guthrie. Combine that with a crazy talented player like Rankine and another year under the belt for Charlie Fisher Weitering McKay etc ... Doc back in defence ... things will change rapidly.

Doesn't make sense. How could he have value if he couldn't get a game?

He think he should be played in the midfield with his big body, stamina and pace.

The more inside 50s we concede the more chances there are for our defenders to look poor.

Build the midfield.

Wow 40% AFL fault for the Carlton predicament please that's ridicules! The club is 95% responsible for the way we have ended up and maybe 5% AFL for smashing us with the draft penalties even though we deserved part of it. To me it's 100% the fault of the members and supporters who demanded we get Pagan or Malthouse or sack Ratten because he isn't a premiership coach the let's go and get the best we're Carlton mentality. The JOHN ELLIOT'S of the world.

1. I have no problem the AFL funding non AFL markets and doing research the 9th game now with Gold Coast and GWS is worth about 57million which seems to fund both clubs anyway. Sydney were in the middle of the teams funded so I don't see that one. As long as the salary cap is the same I don't see a relation to us being crap because of funding?

2. Absolutely agree with draft and salary cap. Yes the draft needs a bit of work to help the sides down the bottom over so many years but the notion of the draft is fine. Free agency needs a heap of work but simply put it was brought in by the players association and not the AFL. When we get better we can use it to our advantage.

As for Gibbs and Tuohy both wanted to go so I don't know what you are saying. No real compensation? We ended up with Marchbank for Touhy which will be like watching Josh Kennedy run around long after Judd retired when Touhy pulls the pin. Not sold on Kennedy and O'Brien for Gibbs but time will tell and Gibbs wanted to go so I don't really get this no compensation thing as we got players/draft picks in return. If we had your old zones and everyone is a free agent like the past then we would have got nothing for Gibbs and Touhy so I don't know what your argument is??

Why? Don't they let you play if you've watched them before? That's a strange rule.

Scottopee, re: point 1 - my point was I don't know how you appropriate blame for Carlton's predicament. For some people, they will say it is 30% Elliott's fault/legacy, others will say 90% Carlton presidents' fault etc...for me though definitely the AFL is a large part to blame. I can't say whether it is 40%, 30% or 50% or some other percentage. How do you work out something like that?

1- You have no problems with the way the AFL has implemented their "expansion" program. Well that is your decision. You backed it up with some statistics that help your argument. I could equally refer to statistics that say it is ridiculous for a country with just 25 million people to have 18 professional football teams when you compare it to the USA which has 30 or 32 professional football teams in a population of 330 million people.

What's more, Australia has competing football codes whilst in the USA there is only really one football code.

2- The draft/salary cap/free agency is in my opinion a joke. Ask yourself- why has Sydney, Geelong and Hawthorn made about every single finals series in the last 15 years? How is that possible in this time of "equalisation". Doesn't the media tell us that the draft/salary cap "equalises" the competition? Does/has the AFL give direct and indirect help to any of these 3 clubs>? What is the point of having "equalisation" if some clubs get given certain advantages others don't get?

Contrast to the NRL - no draft, no free agency - and bingo!! Not one single team has won back to back premierships since 1992/93...if you exclude the super league bit. Now how is that possible? Shouldn't the AFL be looking at the NRL to work out how they do it?
