How many effective non clangers were there, not having a crack at the kid, like everyone else he seemed to turn the ball over a bit, he looked very sore last night and looked as stiff as a board, I think he needs a rest, don't want to kill the kid

Harsh. Had no pre-season and couldn't even run due to a foot injury.
Two weeks back in the twos and forced to play due to Kreuzer getting injured.
Having said that, he played like someone with no pre-season.

Phillips just looks underdone, his timing was off, tried hard but couldn't impact the game, not his fault just needs a few runs in the seconds to find his timing

It's a bit hard to play Palmer when he's injured. Thanks Mick

Didn't he get dropped last week?

On another note....jack needs to become more selfish near goal.

Youngster getting a go is where we are going so all is well as far as im concerned. They copped a floggin;,but im pretty sure they wont be scarred for life.Maybe a hard lesson is a lesson learnt well.I was pleased that Bolton threw a few of the kids into the guts and behind the ball.Put ;em into the eye of the storm.I reckon PetSet showed a bit of promise in the engine room.Hope they persist so he can build on it.Thats two good games in a row from SOJ.Real footy nous.Williamson had some veryyy good moments again.Charlie showed the potential to be a prodigous talent.Could be awsome if he works hard.Fish flashed in and out.Polson will develop...............but the one who has me worried already is Picket.Looks to have speed, power, but is too much of a sheepdog for mine.Has to push himself into the eye of the storm.Looks to me like he knows hes good but with a lot of self doubt.Reckon its above the shoulders with Picket.................we actually could have been far more in this game except for timid ball use through the guts.No run between the arcs. And for crying out loud why did we continually ignore those that created options in the front half.Too much close yyyour eyes and kick the shit out of it when going into the forward line.Fair enough Port were the better side but i reckon through our own ineptness made 'em look better than they are.........................despit that,i feel a quiet confidence about next weeks game.Just a bit more sure ball handling and less fumbling can make a big differance..........despite the maling last night i reckon there are little signs.

Regards Mick.

Wasn't good in the 2nd half (neither was Carlton), but I thought he held his own in the first half. Keen to see the first half stats v Ryder. Clearly short of run.

Pickett is the type of silky player that ices the cake. He's not the nuts and bolts, he's the purr of the engine that puts the smile on your face.

Our cake isn't baked yet, nor the engine built.

Five games of AFL and the only difference between a green shoot and a weed was two extra steps.

We can't nurse them all, agreed but it is imperative that our classy core are growing together, playing together.

Pickett worries you? He's played what? 4 games, 5 games?

Don't know if selfish is the right word, I think he just needs to have the confidence to take the responsibility of the shot at goal himself, the coaches need to get around him and say take the shot son you're good enough

Palmer hasn't played for 2 weeks because of injury. Whether he would have played AFL or VFL, we don't know. Neither does Mick.

Yes

OK.
My post re Daisy (and I am sorry you had to bring this up on a post match thread) may be paraphrased thus:
"Daisy is finished. Bolton should tell him to retire."
If you think that's supporting Daisy at every opportunity you're no student of the english language.
I am happy to continue this discussion on the Dale Thomas thread where in the entire 99-odd pages, I have commented about eight times, usually referring to the fact that:
a. he used to be a star
b, now he isn't
c. but that he does have leadership qualities.
d. It's time to go with dignity
If you disagree with any or all of a. b. c. or d. please outline your reasons for it on the correct thread.

Not in the ruck. Ryder is a leaper and Kreuzer is not. Phillips is a better tap ruckman in that sense but yes, we did miss him in the follow up. Someone else has already posted that and I agree entirely. He is a 200 cm inside mid.

Painful to watch, not even competitive at this level. Can only hope the boys keep believing, keep persisting and eventually improving. Can't pick an individual player to vent my spleen on, it was a dismal performance all round when the list isn't up to the standard.

I think much of the senior list know we're nowhere near it and its all about growing this young side, therefor their efforts are not what they could be if we were genuinely in the hunt for finals. Switching to another gear as good senior players do when its needed most. Its a shame and a bit sad to watch. But time is short in AFL, and its all about our young blokes and the future now. And boy do they look like a bunch of kids on the park. Hopefully the beltings spurn them on to train harder and prove themselves. Until then, it truly blows to be a Carlton supporter ...

I've been critical of Gibbs for a while now but I thought he was great last night, despite some of his disposals going astray. He showed a level of grunt that we haven't seen in him for a while. He can watch the replay without dropping his head.

i kinda agree too. Bolt's reaction when Pickett took the game on down the right flank and ran too far before delivering a pearl into phillips .... bolton lost it.

not sure that's the reaction you want from a coach, when you're getting thumped, and a player at least gives it a go to break their flood. in a team of bad foot and hand skills ... your only hope is to run through them.

it's why fisher, pickett, SPS and docherty look so good in our team. they're actually prepared to try and beat a man, and run with it.

SPS is a gem. he's easily our most talented and skilful player. as it is, he's close to our best player right now - he's just missing a tank and strength which will come. He'll be our andrew macleod when all that happens.

Maybe Bolton was upset there were no options being offered to Pickett which left him high and dry.

Good point.

Disappointing, but I've already moved on.

more perspective...

circa early to mid season 2005 on a Fri night Port smashes Hawthorn by 117 points.

In that team was Lewis, Mitchell, Roughead, Hodge, Franklin, Sewell, Crawford, Bateman, Osborne, Ladson, Croad, Williams...all guys that went onto play in their 2008 flag

Keep playing the young kids...they show something & at this very early stage all look like developing into pretty good footballers
Keep recruiting via the draft
Stay away from the messiah/quick fix
Add a couple of smart trades/free agents

Our time will come

Good post.

It was frustrating to watch the game, but watching Charlie Curnow in the first half lifted the spirits, and there were other examples.

Before the game I had foolishly high hopes, but we had our fifth player for the year playing his first AFL game, and they've all earned their spots. There's quality in our young blokes and I'm in no doubt Bolton is the right person to educate and lead them.

The second quarter was shattering. Dominated the play for very little return, and I knew we were in deep shit from there.
