I'm pretty unexcited about Round 1 this year, just doesn't feel the same.

I did get fired up hearing Derwayne and Monga on 3AW last night droning on about how we "don't deserve" Round 1.

Gillon McLaughlin shut them up pretty quickly.

Our round 1 clash has never produced less than 70k in attendance with extremely high ratings on TV as well.

Carlton coach Brenton Bolton confirms Patrick Cripps to play in Round 1 with big injection of youth on cards
Max Laughton, FOX SPORTS

CARLTON coach Brendon Bolton has confirmed star midfielder Patrick Cripps will play on Thursday night while hinting at a big injection of youth for the season opener.

Cripps initially looked to be in danger of missing Round 1 when he was diagnosed with stress fractures in his back during the off-season and played portions of games during the JLT Community Series.

But Bolton told Fox Sports News’ AFL Tonight on Monday night that Cripps had gotten through his final tests and would play against Richmond.

“We’re wrapped with the work that he’s done and that the conditioning staff (have done) to have him ready,” Bolton said.

Most interesting was this quote:

Quote:
It is set to be a very young Carlton side running out in the now traditional first game of the season, with Bolton suggesting he would name five or six players aged 20 or under.

This might not be a popular opinion here but I think that we need to be playing this sort of number of kids in each game this season. Development is more important than wins - at least for this year. Otherwise we wont now what we have or havent got with our young players.

Weitering, C Curnow, Marchbank, J Silvagni and Pickett makes five.

Pickett will play. That's six. Maybe Cunningham. We need pace. If not, we will get shredded on the break like we have the past three weeks and twenty years. Buckley and Armfield are quick enough but fringe players. Like the others. Time for one of the quick young kids to put his hand up and fire up the afterburners.

I am wondering about Rowe. He is a general down back despite his lack of statistics. He does a lot of punching away and positioning of his body in close. But does he have an opponent this week?
Reiwold close to goal can be guaranteed a bag. Rowe isn't fast enough for him and doesn't have the tank to go with him anyway. Reiwoldt will jump all over him from behind and outlead him from in front. It's a concern.

I am guessing Weitering will go to him at some stage but I am also wondering if Marchbank has the wherewithal. Apparently he is quick and has a tank.

My best 22 is based on a team that has the highest chance of winning our next match. Based on that for Rich:

White Rowe Plowman
Simpson Marchbank Docherty
Kerridge Cripps Gibbs
Wright Casboult Palmer
Pickett Weitering Armfield
Kreuzer Murphy E.Curnow
C.Curnow, Buckley, Smedts, Thomas

I just spent five minutes running through the side expect to be picked and it was the same as this except for J Silvagni instead of Buckley.

I think the backline is too tall there.
I would drop White, even though I like his effort, put Buckley back there and have some one quick like Cunningham on the bench.
There is also the option to rotate Kreuzer and Casboult off the bench and put Jack Silvagni in for White.

Our best 22 has 5-6 players aged 20 or less. We should be expecting that number most weeks.
Weitering, Marchbank, Pickett and Curnow are best 22. Silvagni probably is too. Cuningham, SPS and Fisher aren't far off and guys like McKay, Lebois, Macreadie and Polson will get opportunities.

Round 1, I'll be expecting Weitering, Marchbank, Pickett, Curnow, Silvagni and 1 of the remaining list.

Did someone call in and tell Monga that Essendon* don't deserve ANZAC day?

The sixth ("5 to 6") would probably be Sam Petrevski-Seton, but I'd be surprised if he plays having not played any AFL competition yet. Macreadie is an outside chance also.

I'm pretty sure he said 5 or 6... so may well be just 5.

The selection of LeBois is brave.
I love it.

If the MC think he can play a role as goal sneak with plenty of forward pressure then I believe.
The MCG should light up the hairs on his neck.
For all we know he may announce himself to the footy world with a haul of goals.

Add Pickett and there's danger for Tigers At Casboults feet.

I'm hoping both LeBois and SPS play.
Would cause the Tiges some issues with their match-ups.

LeBois is a rookie and cannot play unless someone is LTI

Philips is our LT1 and expected back in 3 weeks.
We haven't elevated anyone.
We can elevate LeBois for 3 weeks.

Or any rookie.
No nominated rookie this year.

There's also Byrne as another LTI.
I suspect if Le Bois does play and impresses and Philips returns in 3 then LeBois may take the spot of Byrne.

Don't underestimate the rise of Sheehan
