Wow!

Great story!

Rod Waddell is one of those names that's stuck in my head from that formative period that we all go through when it comes to attaching to a club. He wasn't significant in the way that a Wayne Johnston or a Ken Hunter is significant but the joy of being that age was that any of them could have been the next Jesaulenko.

Funny that it never occurred to me that he was indigenous.

Can't be you...

It’s more than 30 years since Waddell, now nearing 60, last played League football, and interviews have been truly scarce – perhaps the legacy of his disinterest in the world of social networking, mobile phones and the internet.

I remember that game V the Bombers. I thought he was going to be a superstar.

He might have been better off at the Pies, they lacked real polish in that time.

Rod won the Sydney AFL Kealey Medal (under 19's League B&F) for Southern Districts (now South West Sydney) before moving back to Melbourne. Highly regarded by the blokes I know who played with him.

Great research
Great story
Great bloke....was good looking. Not bad for a 60 year old. I guess you can't fatten thoroughbreds.

Thanks Tony

I'm too young to recall those times but my work colleague reckons we had a heap of players in the reserves who would have got a game anywhere else. They were just unlucky to be at Carlton at the time.

I can tell you that was the truth.

Rod Waddell, Brenden Hartney and Rohan Burke were dead unlucky, in particular Rohan Burke was just starting to come into his own as a midfielder/centre man when he did his knee and that effectively ended his career, would have been as good as Brett Ratten IMHO.

And whilst we were badly hit with injuries for that particular game - it shows you the depth of that side that 16 of the 20 players were (or went on) to be premiership players.

And the reason I use Bosustow's mark as my avatar is I'm in the photo as part of the crowd.

Lucky for Bosustow, Kevin Bartlett wasn't judging mark of the year that year.

Great story. And just on Bosustow I have to say that he is a really good bloke too. I met him a couple of weeks ago and our mutual acquaintance must have told him how my daughter was a mad Blues fan. No sooner did we shake hands and sit down than he asked me her name and produced a blown up shot of the mark and a marker pen and wrote a message to her and signed it. Then tonight I spoke to him and said my daughter would like to thank him for the photo. Not only did he remember her name, but ten minutes later they were still talking footy and Buzz was suggesting the 3 of us go to a game together when next he's in Melbourne. Talk about making her day!
