The Blues are no push overs. They defend how modern football should be defended: Space and numbers back, and they press up.
It all starts at the contest.
The Blues lost the contested ball against the Dockers by seven, but won the final quarter by 10. That’s what’s football is about. Working over the opposition in a final quarter and winning the game.
The contested stuff was never an issue under Malthouse, his problem was on the outside, where they couldn’t defend spread.
Structurally and defensively, the Blues are much, much better under Bolton. Basically, they are even when it comes to time in forward half (they are ranked 8th), where as last year they were minus eight minutes (ranked 17th).
In a season where scoring has improved, Bolton has managed to get last year’s points against of 107 (ranked 18th) down to 94 this year (ranked 9th).
There are issues with skill and kicking goals, but that will come.
Feel good stories abound and feeling good is where it must start.
