Anyone else notice it was Cripps who broke Fyfe's leg in a tackle?

Cripps was on the grassy knoll.

Re "Send up or us" in the club song.

My understanding was that the lyrics were written shortly after WW1, and referred to being sent up to the front line. The better performed the troops the more often the powers that be would "send up" the poor buggers to the front line. Thus "we are the champions they like to send up, we keep our end up".

I had an early '80's book on Carlton which I've passed on to my grandsons which has the song printed in it; says "send up", as it always was when I was growing up.

Omg. Not that old chestnut again. Like all things in modern society, like "wake up and smell the coffee" and "sooner rather than later", this has now been bastardised.

But let me assure you all, when we were kids, it was definitely "send up", not "send us", which incidentally doesn't make sense, doesn't rhyme, and has no rhythm with the rest of the song.

Blue dog is correct.

How do you know Blue Dog's correct?

We are around the same age mosche. I have never seen it referred to as Send Up (an American saying) till I saw it in a thread on TC. All the print I've seen from 60's 70's and 80's and prior always stated "Send us". It makes sense to me when it was explained. I take your point regading rhyme and rhythm, but that looks to me a kid who has decided it doesn't fit so they changed it so it makes sense to them. Rebel!

In fact the oldest references to the song in print, should sort this old chest nut. I'm a traditionalist for all things Carlton, and if there is evidence that Send Up was used and printed before Send Us then I'm a convert. Till that time I'll stick to tradition.

I heard of the explanation of the reference to "They" being the Heavens and the greater powers of God, from Bert Deacon's mate a Mr Reid back in 1969-70 as I was always curious about the reference to "They", and who they were. I met Bert that day and Bert gave me a members medallion.

Would love to know the truth.

" Us vs Up Controversy

There is some controversy with regards to the use of the word 'up' or 'us' in the line 'They like to send ..'.

Items of memorabilia from as early as the 1960's have both us and up as options. Also, before the 2003 season at an open day at Princes Park, they had music sheets with Carlton theme song words and again it was "With all the champions they like to send us". Us is also the option written in the wall in the players change rooms at Princes Park.

However, many other items including records and annual reports have 'up' as the option".

Pre 60's = UP
Post 60's = UP & US. The sexual revolution, the beginning of the decline of Christianity, and perhaps the increased use of marijuana and LSD (which was legal) may have had something to do with the change...just saying.

Look ... I love the fact that we won. That we played out the game even though it was a grind.
But lets face it ... Freo was horrible and on top of that they were without 3 or 4 of their best players.

Happy that Jones took advantage of his limited possessions ... but also ... Johnson had lost a lot of mobility in that last quarter and I reckon even Synbad would have got a kick or two on him. One kick just fell into Jones's hands.

Good to see Murph/Gibbs and Crips getting amongst it ... but when you look at the stats we were pretty much beaten everywhere. What an awful game!
I thought Bolton's comments were on the money ... its great that the boys feel like they are going somewhere and a win adds weight to this.

So ... it was a better weekend because we won but that's about it.

Coming back from WA, facing a fired up Essendon*, and after watching a game full of mistakes ... I am not very hopeful of a win this week. I just hope I am wrong.

GO BLUES!

Yes the game was scrappy but we made it that way.
The conditions were oppressive (very humid) and, although it didn't show on the TV, the ball was slippery particularly as the game went on. In the last quarter the ball had a gloss on it.

So talk the win down all you like. You weren't there, it was a tough game.

When I got the opportunity to see the game on TV I actually think we could have won quite easily with a bit more composure.

What was pleasing was our defensive co-ordination.

Notice how there was almost no Joe the goose goals? Notice how there were very few one outs? In the previous 4 games we got carved up constantly by the fast break and the opposition forward running back to his goal. Didn't happen this week. Freo didn't get easy disposals, we had pressure on the ball carrier all day and that is Freo's strength, so of course it was scrappy.

freo were disposing of the ball worse than us, and they're midfield is so disjointed. they can't string together 5 passes in a row by foot or hand.

it'll be much more interesting to see how we stand up against the bombers. they'll be up & about for this game.

They now get Crippled

I thought the perspective was that they have been the Team with highest Win/Loss ratio in the AFL these past 3 years and they played off in a Prelim last year. Plus in WA they are a 6 goal better team. On their best days in 2015, without those 4 players, they would still beat us by 10 goals on their home ground.

We are a bottom of the ladder team who played on shear guts, very little talent and a poorly functioning F50.

That's perspective.

Ok ... not as bad as I thought ... things did even up at the end but still behind especially in Tackles.

Disposals Dockers 362 Blues 356
Clearances Dockers 38 Blues 32
Inside 50 Dockers 48 Blues 47
Contested Poss Dockers 146 Blues 139
Tackles Dockers 100 Blues 77
Hit -Outs Dockers 46 Blues 45

Hey ... happy to celebrate win. Its a good thing especially for the youngsters ... but realistic about it as well.
